READYMADE
Inspired by native Canadian gathering spaces throughout
history, the READY-MADE shelter draws on elements of
traditional shelters like the Teepee and the Igloo. Although
temporary in nature, the Teepee and the Igloo provide
a space for family to gather, sleep, eat and call home –
even if just for a few days. The transparency of the Teepee
sheathing and the block style construction of the igloo are
visible inspirations for the shelter, but another element was
fire. Fire has brought people and communities together
throughout history – for cooking food, for warmth, for light –
in the READY MADE shelter, a simulation fire is created by
diffusing light through translucent materials, drawing those
displaced from their homes together with the familiar glow.
All materials used in the Ready Made shelter are readily
available, recyclable and in some instances are Canadian
made & manufactured. Ease of assembly was important,
and the minimal kit of parts is reflective of that. The READY
MADE shelter provides users temporary refuge from the
chaos that displaced them.

Once the contents are removed, the Tyvek will be used as bedding, or a roof
membrane to diffuse the harsh flourescent lights in the school gymnasium.

elements, the shelter can be set up according to the users preference. The
READY MADE shelter creates no waste, and all elements can be recycled or
reused.
a. MOLO® SOFT WALL® : Designed and Manufactured by Canadian company Molo, Soft Wall® will be used to create
the personal enclosure throughout the stay. Molo® Soft Wall® creates a sense of privacy and securtity, much like the
walls of the Igloo, or Teepee, without the permanence of solid walls. This corrugated craft paper product can expand
from a compressed size of 16”x13”x3” to a length of up to 15’-0”, making it ideal in terms of transportation to site.

floor, only 5/8” thick, it can easily be rolled up and transported. c. TYVEK® SOFT STRUCTURE® : durable,
waterproof and tear resistant, this paper-like fabric is nearly indestructable, yet soft enough to wear as a garment.
the Tyvek will be used as not only the vehicle in which the kit is contained, but also as a semitransparent ceiling,
and the bedding for the users. Grommets would be preinstalled for use with Molo Peg + Disc. d.

used to secure the layers of Molo Soft Wall together, but in this case, used as a hook to hang
clothing. e. PAPER LANTERN: readily available at most dollar stores, the paper lantern is
used as a gathering point, as well as a wayfinding beacon. When personalized using the included
