Raw Material Procurement
Business Operations
Stable procurement of high-quality raw materials
through an extensive network across the world
Fuji Oil Group has been endeavoring to ensure stable procurement of high-quality raw materials so as to secure its stable
supply to customers. Since its foundation, the Group has built overseas supply routes for oils and fats such as palm and
coconut, and has established production bases around the world. For soybeans, we have established multiple procurement
routes to flexibly respond to risks arising from natural disasters and material shortages. Such efforts represent our
commitment to build a procurement network linking to the origins of our raw materials around the world.
We are striving to ensure stable procurement in terms of not only quality but also quantity by conducting various analytical
tests that can detect potential problems, such as residues of agricultural chemicals.

Contributing the health of earth and its people
Founded in 1950, Fuji Oil is an oil and fat maker that entered the business later than its major rivals in Japan.
Fuji Oil has put its focuses on oils and fats from raw materials produced in the tropical areas—which our rivals did not use
much. Our business strategies also include the unique use of soybeans. As such, we have had the belief that imitating the
successful ideas of others is not the path to the future. So we have developed various technologies and pursue our businesses.
Currently, we see a number of problems such as global warming and food resource depletion due to population growth.
Surrounded among those, however, all people around the world wish to lead healthy lives. Based on the technologies
accumulated in the past half century, we have engaged in three main business domains “oils and fats processing,”
“confectionery and baking ingredients,” and “soy protein products.” By so doing, we will tackle such social problems.

Characteristics of palm oil
Palm oil has the largest production and consumption
quantities among all oils or fats in the world. It has
strong tolerances to heat and oxygen that would cause
degradations on other oils within short time period, and
is considered suitable for fried products and foods which
stay on the market for a long time before reaching
consumers. Palm oil is basically solid and is processed
into various products that are used for various purposes,
using a “fractionation” technology. After trans fatty
acids’ health concerns became known, palm oil has
become popular because it does not contain trans
fatty acids, leading to growing demand
worldwide.

Soy protein that has the texture of shrimp
Fuji Oil Group has been exploring new possibilities of soybeans for the past 50
years. One of successful examples of such efforts was the industrial production of
soy polysaccharides for the first time in the world. More recently, Fuji Oil Group
succeeded for the first time in Japan in developing textured soy protein that has the
texture of shrimp. This has been used as an ingredient to replace shrimps, whose
prices have been soaring with their catch plunging due to an infectious disease. Fuji
Oil Group has also developed very thin meat-like soy protein, using various
technologies that have been accumulated based on a combination of materials,
production facilities and operating conditions thereof. The newly developed
“soybean meat” looks like genuine meat and has the texture of meat. As these
cases show, Fuji Oil Group has been continuously searching for new fields where
soybeans can be used.
In March 2015, the Fuji Oil Group established Asia R&D Center in Singapore,
marking the Group's first research laboratory outside Japan. The center
engages in research and development in response to various customer needs
in Asian countries while integrating the region's development functions.
Fuji Oil has now decided to set up the Fuji Science & Innovation Center within
its Hannan business operations complex. The center will lead the Group's
technological research and development activities across the world, endeavor
to create new businesses, new technologies and new products, and play a
pivotal role in the Group's technological innovation.

The Fuji Oil Group is anxious to become its customers’ best partner by working together with them to resolve various global
food problems and create new values in the world of food.
We will engage in "Monozukuri" (creating products) while putting forward proposals aimed at solving problems faced by our
customers on all fronts, including the provision of trend information and presentation of measures to improve manufacturing
and other work processes. We will also engage in "Kotozukuri" (creating movements) through which we create new value to
customers, consumers and society. Both "Monozukuri" and "Kotozukuri" are part of our efforts to create new markets.
FUJISUNNY PLAZAs serve as the places for creating new products and new menus by utilizing the most up-to-date
information, wisdom and technologies through the close communications with customers. We have set up eight FUJISUNNY
PLAZAs in Japan, China and other Asian countries, where we are working with customers to create products that would

Through such activities we help customers around the world develop new
products.
We have developed food products that are friendly to elderly people.
Japan experiences rapid increase in elderly population. One out of every four of
over 70 years old is said to suffer from new-type undernourishment due to
inadequate intake of protein. Therefore, a serious thought to these people’s food
lives, health and nutrition is of significant
social meaning. Under these circumstances,

Soy Protein
Exploring the new potential of soybeans and their deliciousness
by refocusing on the inherent properties of soybeans
03
Fuji Oil Group has launched its medium- and long-term strategy for its soybean business
under the slogan of “Soy Renaissance,” aimed at refocusing on the inherent properties of
soybeans, creating new values for soybeans, and thereby contributing to the health of
people and earth. Under the slogan, we are exploring the potential use of soybean by
examining every aspect thereof. The first set of the outcome is the premium soymilk
products which consist of soymilk cream and low-fat soymilk, produced using the USS (ultra
soy separation) manufacturing method for the first time in the world. The method was
inspired from the centrifugation of raw milk and relevant patents have been granted.
Our premium soy milk contains a level of deliciousness and functions that conventional Soy
milk products do not have. Based on this premium soy milk, we have developed whipping
cream products, dressings and cheese-like soy milk cream, adding them to our product
lineup. These soy milk products are also used as ingredients in Chinese food like
zhajiangmian (a Chinese dish of ground pork over wheat noodles) and sweets as well as
Japanese foods. Our premium soy milk products enrich the taste of the food in which they
are used as ingredients while adding soybeans’ deliciousness and richness to the food.
The Fuji Oil Group has been engaging in the research and development of soybean-based foods since its foundation half
a century ago. We have continued to create a range of ingredients with advanced functions, including soy protein
isolate, soy peptide, and soluble soy polysaccharides, as well as premium soy milk products that have been developed
through the USS (ultra soy separation) manufacturing method for the first time in the world. Our lineup of soy protein
food products, effective in enhancing people’s health and nutrition, is wide ranging. We are exploring a new potential
of soybeans to create a product that brings out their inherent deliciousness.

[ Safety, Security and Quality of Foods ]
Efforts to obtain international certificates for food quality
management
In conducting business operations, the Fuji Oil Group has put top
priority on safety, quality and environmental integrity. In 1996,
the Group adopted its Quality Policy. We have established the
Fuji Oil Group Safety, Quality and Environmental Policy and a set
of quality guidelines aimed at concretizing the policy , in order
to manufacture products with safety and security in mind and to
achieve a high level of customer satisfaction. In addition, we have
established a production system in which products of the same
quality are manufactured by all Group companies through strict
quality control. Specifically, we are constantly checking products throughout the entire production process,
from manufacturing to shipment, so that the quality and manufacturing process will meet the requirements and
standards set by us. Furthermore, we also inspect factories run by other companies that make products for us on
a consignment basis. As the cases above show, we audit our production management.

U.S. case
Fuji Vegetable Oil (U.S.A.) has been improving its facilities as
part of its efforts to strengthen food defense. Tanks being used
at its plants for vegetable oil production have been gradually
replaced by ones incorporating laser measurement devices.
A valve is installed in the tank for taking out small samples,
which makes it unnecessary for the tank to be opened each
time the sample is taken, a step designed to reduce the risk
of foreign matter being mixed into the tank. Furthermore, a
video recording device is installed at all places where human
work is involved, preventing the unauthorized entry of thirdparty persons and ensuring the safety of workers. These
measures are also intended to ensure production of highquality products.
Fuji Oil (Singapore) receives the platinum Food Safety Excellence Award
Fuji Oil (Singapore), a member of the Fuji Oil Group, received the platinum award at the
Food Safety Excellence Awards held by the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore
(AVA: A statutory board under Singapore’s Ministry of National Development.). Newly
introduced this year, the platinum award is given to companies certified by AVA to have
maintained a high-level “A-grade” of food sanitation and safety for 20 consecutive years.
In this year it was awarded to 25 companies. (A gold award given to companies who have
maintained an A-grade for 15 consecutive years, a silver award for 10 and a bronze award
for five consecutive years.)
This award recognizes the results of the efforts made over 20 consecutive years by Fuji Oil
(Singapore) towards food hygience and safety. Fuji Oil (Singapore) will provide safe and
hygienic products to customers at all times.
Director responsible for safety, quality and environmental control
Oils & Fats Division
Various analyses and tests of raw materials and
products are essential to ensuring food safety
and security. The Fuji Oil’s Analytical Center for
Food Safety is conducting analyses and tests of
genetically modified soybeans, residual agricultural
chemicals, foreign matter (both organic and
inorganic), allergens, pathogens and food additives
and alike. Fuji Oil has been improving facilities and
systems of the Center, so as to deliver products
with safety, security and high-quality to customers.
* GFSI: The GFSI is a nonprofit organization established in 2000 to ensure and enhance food safety
globally. The GFSI has released food-safety management standards as international guidelines for
companies involved in the food business. By comparing major food-safety management systems
in various countries, the GFSI approves those that meet its requirements.
Fuji Oil Quality Assurance Structure

Improvement of Analytical Center for Food
Safety
To establish a more reliable quality management system, Fuji Oil has
been working hard to obtain international certificates for management
of food product quality. In recent years, the necessity of strengthening
food defense has been recognized by many companies. Quality
inspections conducted by Fuji Oil since fiscal 2012 have confirmed that
its products meet the standards required under the Global Food Safety
Initiative (GFSI)*. Based on this confirmation, Fuji Oil Group companies
operating overseas have been endeavoring to obtain international
certificates for food quality management, well ahead of domestic Group
companies. Six such companies, including Fuji Oil Europe, have already
obtained FSSC22000, a certificate for food safety management.
C ol u m n
Each Fuji Oil division has established a Quality Control Group responsible for strictly monitoring compliance
at each step of its operations with standards and benchmarks set by the company, from raw materials
procurement to production and shipping. We have also established a Quality Assurance Department as an
independent entity, and this department is building a company-wide lateral quality assurance structure.
