During the 21 chapters in The House on Mango Street we have read, the main character and
narrator, Esperanza, described a number of dramatic situations involving her, her friends, and her
family. Some of this situations were heartwarming and uplifting; some were the opposite. Pick a
situation you connect with most, describe the nature of the conflict in that situation. Then,
describe both the situation’s literary mood and Esperanza’s tone as she narrates.

discovers. Based on what we read so far, what do you consider to be the theme of The House on
Mango Street, and describe at least two plot events which represent this theme.
