Which element above would be most likely to lose electrons in a chemical bond? __________ e. Which element above would be most likely to gain electrons in a chemical bond? __________ f. Which elements are not likely to bond with other elements? _____ _____ Why? _________________________ Name:_____________________________________________________Date:______________________ Aim #22: Chemistry- Atomic Structure 5. Trends in the Periodic Table: The Periodic Table is a model used to classify different elements. Symbols of one, two or three letters are used to represent the names of the elements. Only the first letter of the symbol is capitalized. Elements are arranged in order of increasing atomic number. All the elements in the same columns or groups have similar properties. Example: Li, Na, and K are all solids. The last column of elements, such as He, Ne, Ar, and Kr, are the noble gases. These elements are inert, they do not usually react with any other elements. The zigzag line on the table separates two types of elements. Elements to the left are metals. Metals have luster (shiny) and are solid, malleable (can be hammered into a shape), ductile, and are good conductors of heat and electricity. Non-metals are on the right side of the line. They are dull, brittle, and are poor conductors of heat and electricity. Most of the elements that are along the line are metalloids. Metalloids have some properties of metals and non-metals. a. Elements are arranged in order of __________________ atomic number. b. Elements in the same group have similar ___________________. (Label groups 1-18 on the Periodic Table above). c. __________________ are malleable, have luster, and are good conductors. (Label the side of the Periodic table where you would find metals). d. Non-metals are ____________________ conductors of heat. (Label the side of the Periodic Table where you would find non-metals). e. Elements that do not react with other elements are the ____________________. (Label the group on the Periodic Table where these non-reactive elements are found). f. In which group would you find the most reactive metals? __________________________________________ g. In which group would you find the most reactive non-metals? ______________________________________ h. Why are some elements more reactive than others (reactive – more likely to form bonds with other elements)? ________________________________________________________________________________________
