Community of Mediterranean Universities
The first article of the Statute of Community of Mediterranean Universities (CMU)states:
“. . . The CMU, upholding the freedom of science and in order to contribute to peace, . . .”.
These above mentioned aims are still the main concern for CMU.
The CMU is deeply convinced that the culture, as a public good, can and will have a relevant role in
the sustainable development of the Mediterranean as well as in other regions since the cultural,
political and economic behaviours are mutually supportive and contribute to a peaceful
surrounding.
The adhesion of CMU to the EFA process, the involvement in the PEACE programme, the
association with the “”Le Collège des hautesétudeseuropéennesMiguel Servet", the participation in
the “United Nations Academic Impact” (UNAI) clearly indicate the willingness of the Community
of Mediterranean Universities to pursue the goals stated in the above mentioned mission.
All its activities (the proposed masters of tourism and that on nutrition, the research on “Road
Safety”, the adhesion to the implementation of a network of the Mediterranean Unitwin Chairs) are
concerned in supporting the statements of the art. 1 of the Statute, the main goal being to enhance
the creation of a new generation of experts sensible to actual world realities, able to effectively
interpret and deal with the crucial problems of the region mastering a true partnership within the
Mediterranean basin’s countries (south-south and south-north partnership).
As an added tool a particular relevance will be given to e-learning activities, in order to partially
overcome the costs for the implementation of educational programmes and, therefore, as a
mechanism for sustainable development of the region.
The CMU has also supported the and collaborated with many international bodies such as PEACE
Programme, EMUNI, Tarragona Network, RMEI, United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI), Le
Collège des hautesétudeseuropéennes Miguel Servet, just to mention only some of them.
Furthermore, the CMU’s UNITWIN Chair has devoted its activity supporting the institutional aims
of the network, i.e. the higher education programmeand the scientific research.
The organization of many roundtables, workshops and meetings on topics crucial for the problems
related to Mediterranean basin like desertification and water supply, the role of the Mediterranean
women, the use of e-learning as an important component in the teaching activities etc. demonstrates
the relevant role of CMU in deepening, with the contribution of experts belonging to most of the
Mediterranean countries, crucial issues pertinent with this region.
Furthermore we hope to succeed in convincing the universities to give full, multilateral equivalence to
the degrees awarded in the different Mediterranean countries thanks to an agreement subscribed by the
adhering Universities.
The proposal of implementing a network of the Mediterranean UNITWIN Chairs, and the CMU’s
Chairproject to aggregate its activity on a global approach like “Higher Education and Research
Programme on sustainable development in the Mediterranean region “ called PESME, together with
the formation of “Focus Groups”, represent the consolidated willingness of CMU in contributing to
a peaceful endeavour in the region.
In conclusion we are trying to change a “cultural ageing” to a “cultural development” in order to
build up and foster our future towards a more peaceful regional integration.
