Science (K) – 9 Lesson Aim: To introduce some - Halo-Soma

Science (K) – 9th Lesson
Aim: To introduce some famous scientists and their achievements.
Objectives: Terms: Wilbur and Orville Wright, glider, Kitty Hawk,
propeller, Flyer I
Material: It wasn’t so long ago that people thought human beings
would never fly. It took two brothers, Orville and Wilbur Wright, to
prove that human beings could build a machine that could fly.
Sensory: (S) Spell F L Y. (T) Show a picture of the Wright brothers.
Question: Orville and Wilbur Wright were ________________.
cousins
or
brothers
Material: In the late 1890’s, when Orville and Wilbur were young, they
opened a bicycle shop together. They were known as boys who could
build and fix things. At night, they thought about the possibilities of
flying.
Sensory: (S) Write B I C Y C L E.
Questions: When Orville and Wilbur were young, they opened a
_____________shop. At night they thought about ____________.
bicycle or ice cream
horseback riding or flying
Material: Orville and Wilbur heard about a German engineer who had
build a glider. A glider is a plane with no engine which is carried by the
wind, like a kite. Even when they heard that this engineer had died
when his glider crashed, they kept on trying to find a way to fly.
Science (K) – 9th Lesson – page 2
Sensory: (S) Spell G L I D E R. (T) Show a picture of an early glider.
Question: A glider is like a ____________. It moves forward by the
boat
or
kite
________________.
wind
or
water
Material: Wilbur and Orville built their own glider. It had two big
wings, one on the top and one on the bottom, and a place for a person to
lie down in the middle. They tested it near the Atlantic Ocean at Kitty
Hawk, North Carolina.
Sensory: (S) Spell W I N G. (T) Show a picture of the Wright
brothers’ glider.
Question: Wilbur and Orville Wright built a ______________.
canoe
or
glider
They tested it near the Atlantic Ocean at __________________.
Kitty Hawk
or
Plymouth
Material: The glider that Wilbur and Orville built crashed and they
were very discouraged. But, they kept trying; the next plane they built
had an engine which turned the propellers.
Sensory: (S) Spell P L A N E. Write P R O P E L L E R.
Question: After their glider crashed, the Wright brothers kept trying
and built a plane which had an ________________. The engine turned
oven
the _________________.
propellers
or
legs
or
engine
Science (K) – 9th Lesson – page 3
Material: In December of 1903, the Wright brothers flew their plane,
which they named Flyer I, at Kitty Hawk. The plane stayed in the air
for 12 seconds and flew 120 feet. They flew Flyer I three more times
that day; the fourth time, the plane stayed in the air for 59 seconds
and flew 852 feet. The Wright brothers proved that human beings
could fly in a flying machine!
Sensory: (S) Spell F L Y E R.
Question: The Wright brothers flew their first plane in _________.
1993 or 1903
They named their plane the ____________________.
Flyer I
or
Concord
