Saint Bonaventure Catholic Parish Third Sunday of Advent December 11, 2016 They will bloom with abundant flowers and rejoice with joyful song. Isaiah 35:2 Page two Third Sunday of Advent PASTOR’S CORNER Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, We have passed the mid-way point of Advent. We continue to prepare for the coming of the Lord. How is your journey going? We turn to the Gospel of Matthew, to make sure we are going the right way. John the Baptist had been preparing the way of the Lord, proclaiming, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!” (Matthew 3:2) John said that the one coming after him would, “Baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fan is in his hand. He will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.” (Matthew 3:11-12) Now John the Baptist was in prison and had heard about the ministry of Jesus. John wanted to make sure Jesus is the Savior. He sent disciples to ask Jesus, “Are you the one who is to come or should we look for another?” (Matthew 11:3) Jesus responded, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind regain their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have the good news proclaimed to them.” (Matthew 11:5) Most likely when John got this message he recalled the prophesy of Isaiah, “Then will the eyes of the blind be opened, the ears of the deaf be cleared; then will the lame leap like a stag, then the tongue of the mute will sing.” (Isaiah 35:5-6) Jesus praises John, telling the crowd that he is more than a prophet, “This is the one about whom it is written: Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way before you.” However as great as John the Baptist is, Jesus says, “The least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.” (Matthew 11:10-11) Jesus wants us to be with him in the kingdom of heaven. If we want to know what we need to do to get there, read Matthew 25. When Jesus comes again in his glory, all the nations will be assembled before him and he will separate them as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, with sheep on his right and goats on his left, “Then the king will say to those on his right, “Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me … Amen I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.” (Matthew 25:31-46) John the Baptist cries out to us as he cried out to the people of long ago, “Prepare the way of the Lord.” We prepare for the Lord when we live our faith. We live our faith when we reach out and help those that are most vulnerable and in need. Remember what you do for one of these least ones you are doing for our Lord Jesus Christ. What you do not do for one of these least ones, you are not doing for Christ. Are you ready for the coming of the Lord? Holy See Appoints Father Timothy Freyer Auxiliary Bishop for the Diocese of Orange Bishop-elect Timothy Freyer, current Vicar for Priests in the Diocese of Orange, has been appointed by Pope Francis as Auxiliary Bishop for the Diocese of Orange, assisting Bishop Kevin Vann. The date of his episcopal ordination will be January 17, 2017. "I am both humbled and honored to accept this appointment," said Fr. Freyer. "I am grateful to Pope Francis and to Bishop Vann for their trust and confidence in me and I pray that I may live up to their expectations. In addition to my gratitude to the Holy Father and Bishop Vann, I am also grateful to Bishops Brown and Luong for their friendship and affection over these past years." In his new role, Bishop-elect Freyer says he will assist Bishop Vann in any way he can, including continuing to develop the diocese's new pastoral plan. He will also continue to focus on evangelization, including creating experiences, ministries and structures that will bring people closer to Christ. Please pray for Bishop-elect Timothy Freyer as he makes this significant and historic transition. Many elder religious worked for years for small stipends, leaving a large gap in retirement savings. At the same time, fewer religious are able to serve in compensated ministry. By 2026, it is projected that religious past age 70 will outnumber those under age 70 by nearly four to one. Like many Americans, religious communities face the monumental challenge of funding elder care. Roughly 95 percent of donations to the Retirement Fund for Religious directly aid senior religious and their communities. Please be generous. ROSARY & BENEDICTION This third week of Advent is Gaudete Sunday. This is approximately midway in our journey of expectancy of the Lord’s being made flesh and coming among us. This Sunday is marked by the use of rose-colored vestments, the lighting of the rosecolored candle and a new Invitatory; the Church no longer inviting the faithful to adore merely “The Lord who is to come,” but calling upon us to worship and hail with joy “The Lord is now nigh and close at hand.” The expectation and anticipation of the season is further emphasized by the spirit of the liturgy and the constant alleluias throughout Advent. After Guadete Sunday, the liturgy of the fourth week of Advent returns to the solemnity of the season and moves us into even deeper prayerful preparation for our Lord’s coming. The O’Antiphons refer to the seven antiphons that are recited or chanted preceding the Magnificat during vespers of the Liturgy of the Hours. They cover the special period of Advent preparation known as the Octave (8 days) before Christmas, December 17–23, with December 24 being Christmas Eve and vespers for that evening being for the Christmas Vigil. The exact origin of the O’Antiphons is not known, however they are believed to have come into use at a Benedictine abbey in France around the 5th century. By the 8th century, they began to be used in liturgical celebrations in Rome. They are a magnificent theology that uses ancient biblical imagery drawn from the messianic hopes of the Old Testament to proclaim the coming Christ as the fulfillment not only of Old Testament hopes, but present ones as well and embodies the longing of all for the Divine Messiah. The importance of the O’Antiphons is twofold: each one highlights a title for the messiah: O Wisdom, O Lord, O Root of Jesse’s stem, O Key of David, O Radiant Dawn, O King of Nations, and O Emmanuel (God is with us), thus referring to the prophecy of Isaiah of the coming of the Messiah. During Advent, we are encouraged to make the connections between these ancient prayers and our contemporary life. December 17 O Wisdom of our God Most High, guiding creation with power and love: come to teach us the path of knowledge! December 18 O Leader of the House of Israel, giver of the Law to Moses on Sinai: come to rescue us with your mighty power! December 19 O Root of Jesse’s stem, sign of God’s love for all his people: come to save us without delay! December 20 O Key of David, opening the gates of God’s eternal Kingdom: come and free the prisoners of darkness! December 21 O Radiant Dawn, splendor of eternal light, sun of justice: come and shine on those who dwell in darkness and in the shadow of death. December 22 O King of all nations and keystone of the Church: come and save man, whom you formed from the dust! December 23 O Emmanuel, our King and Giver of Law: come to save us, Lord our God! Third Sunday of Advent ADVENT WREATH Prayer for the Third Week (Light pink candle and two purple candles.) Resisting Happiness will inspire you to break through resistance so you can become the-best-versionof-yourself® and start living with passion and purpose.
