Outline • What is hormone? • Endocrine glands • Adrenaline Hormone Hormones are chemical substances secreted by endocrine glands or ductless glands directly into the bloodstream. • The blood carries the hormones to all parts of the body and affects organs sensitive to them. • 2 types of hormones: – short lasting (ADH, insulin) and long lasting (sex hormone). • These hormones are then destroyed in the liver and excreted by kidneys. • The endocrine system and the nervous system cooperate to coordinate the body's activity. Endocrine Glands Endocrine glands are ductless glands that are responsible for secreting chemicals called hormones in small quantities directly into the bloodstream. Adrenaline • Adrenaline is a hormone secreted by adrenal glands which are situated just above the kidneys. • It is secreted during conditions of fear, anxiety and stress.
