For more than 40 years we’ve seen that the well-being of people
and planet go hand in hand – and it’s been the inspiration for
our campaigns. Together with thousands of people like you we’ve
secured safer food and water, defended wildlife and natural
habitats, championed the move to clean energy and acted to
keep our climate stable. Be a Friend of the Earth – see things
differently.

The government and officials could
find new ways to help
What if primary schools started making their own clean, cheap
energy to use and sell? The money they would normally spend
on bills for power from polluting fuels, like coal or gas, could go
towards much better things. Things like new instruments for
the orchestra, an extra school trip for the year or even a nature
garden. Now we’re talking! With solar panels saving the primary
school money, almost anything is possible.

With your donations we are going to
give one primary school some money so
they can install solar panels and make it
easier for other schools too. Then they
could start saving money for much
more exciting things.

Three ways adults can make a difference
Solar panels can start
something incredible
Imagine if each primary
school was actually like a
smart power station that
turned sunlight into energy.
Wouldn’t that be incredible?
We think that when more
people see solar energy
working, the government will
take notice and you’ll start to
see solar panels everywhere.

Solar energy can inspire
children, parents and even
other primary schools
It can be very difficult for head teachers to find
the money they need to install solar panels on
their roof. We want to help and are talking to
the government and the local authorities to
make things easier for head teachers. And with
help from people who send donations we are
going to give one primary school the funds so
they can install solar panels.

Solar facts
Solar panels use light to make electricity.
Produced by nuclear reactions inside the sun
this light travels 150 million kilometres to
reach us, taking just over eight minutes.
The very first solar
panels were invented
more than 100 years
ago, making them an
older invention than
the Teddy Bear.
Solar power will not
run out for billions of
years, and produces
no pollution when
used.
The Sun is more
than 4.5 billion
years old. That is
4,500,000,000 years.
More energy reaches the
Earth from the Sun every
couple of hours than
all the humans on the
planet use in a year.
Sunlight is the source of
almost all life on earth. It is
used by plants to make food,
which in turn feed animals
and people. In the oceans too
small plants form the basis
for the food chain.
