COMMON CORE STATE STANDARD
CCSS.Math.Content.2.OA.A.1 Use addition and subtraction within 100
to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding
to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a
symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
PRE LESSON ASSESSMENT
Do a pre lesson assessment to determine what the students
already know about addition when using integers.

STEP 1
Starting with a blank piece of paper have the
students draw a variety of flowers in pencil. One
flower needs to stand above the rest with a large
enough center to be written in and large enough
petals to be written in.
STEP 2
After the students are done with the outline of their
artwork, have them go over their markings with a
black fine point marker. Once the outline of their
artwork is done have the students pick a negative
integer they would like to focus on to be the sum
of all the equations. Have them write this number
in the center of their larger flower.
STEP 3
Have the students calculate equations that
involve adding a negative integer and a positive
integer to equal their center number. Have the
students write these equations in the petals of
their flowers surrounding the sum or center
number of the flower. Once a variety of equations
have been made up, have the students color their
artwork with water colors. Have the students
check their answers by sharing equations with
the class where the negative and positive integers equal the sum or center number.
POST LESSON ASSESMENT
Do a post assessment to determine what new knowledge the students have gained.
