St Cuthbert’s RC Primary School Teaching and Learning of Reading Reading Skills Ensure teaching and learning enables children to develop the skills needed to achieve end of year expectations as outlined in new curriculum/new assessments. Word Recognition Decoding ,fluency, accuracy, stamina, expression and enjoyment Comprehensive focus Develop range of comprehension skills so that they can read and make a written response to a range of texts/question types (as illustrated in formal reading assessments.) Children need to be familiar with the comprehension question formats of formal assessments and understand how to answer these questions. Risings Progress in Reading tests have been utilised for this reason. Planning / Recording Outcomes Allow 30 minutes per day for reading. Develop a carousel of activities / timetable School Pupil Tracker must be updated at least every fortnight. Activities Adult-led sessions must have a clear outcome, linking to the Curriculum 2014 skills. Every reading lesson should begin with children reading their reading books This will allow you to monitor who has and has not brought their reading books back and provide further opportunity for reading for pleasure. Adults must monitor that children are returning their books EVERYDAY Class teachers must speak to parents of children that do not return their books every day. 1. Home Reading Books One reading lesson a week should be used to change home reading books Individual reading record to be completed for/by every child every week Date Level /Book Band Book Title Comment There should be a high expectation that all children: Read every day at home/at school Bring their books back to school every day Change their book at least every week within the daily reading time independently/ with an adult Choose to read a range of texts at their level. 2. Reading Comprehension (Teach /Practice/Apply) Whole class explicit teaching/learning of Comprehension skills Read and written response to a range of texts/question types Use of a range of resources Developing Comprehension skills (NEW) Guided Reading books/activities Previous assessments-Rising Stars/PIRA/ Test Base Comprehension schemes e.g. SRA, Cracking Comprehension, Schofield and Sims, Scholastic Differentiated activities- journals/worksheets/workbooks Marking/corrections within the lesson Record of learning outcomes on SPTO 4. Assessment of Reading Skills x 1 lesson Past PIRA papers Rising Stars Progress Tests Test Base Questions These activities can be organised in a variety of ways Whole class- same learning outcome/activity Groups- different learning outcomes/activities Independent / Adult Led Record of Teaching/Learning- Reading Journals/Files To be completed daily by the children Individual Reading Record-(In front of reading Journal) List of books read Reading Journal-Date/Learning Outcome/Title of Text/ Activity Home Reading Record –at least once a week Reading Aloud Adults should read aloud to children EVERYDAY using a text by a good author. Teachers must promote the reading of ‘CLASSICS’. Individual Reading Children who do not read at home should be read with by an adult several times a week,. This MUST be recorded every session. This is an intervention and should be on their intervention record. St Cuthbert’s RC Primary School Assessment Formative Assessment Word Reading : Monitoring- (1.1 /group) decoding, fluency, accuracy, stamina, book band/level /books read, Phoneme/word recognition checklist Reading Comprehension: Weekly Activities in reading journals Fortnightly - Ensure SPTO is updated Summative Assessment Rising Stars Progress Tests half-termly PIRA reading tests every term Following the reading assessments Ensure all children are on the correct book band level/book That SPTO entries are accurate Enter Teacher Assessment judgements for each child on SPTO Children should be able to read the text with fluency accuracy and understanding appropriate to that level. Most children should move a book band/level at least every term.
