Thursday Sept 18 7:00pm Boston Beer: A History of Brewing in the Hub Since before Patriots like Paul Revere and Sam Adams fermented a revolution in smoky Beantown taverns, beer has been integral to the history of Boston. The city issued its first brewing license in 1630 and continued until the American Temperance Movement championed prohibition, nearly wiping out all of the local breweries. From the planning of the Boston Tea Party over a pint at Green Dragon Tavern to the renaissance of the burgeoning craft brewing scene, join author and "Beer Nut" Norman Miller as he savors the sudsy history of brewing in the Hub. Thursday Finding the First Minot’s Ledge Lighthouse Oct 9 7:00pm The historic Minot’s Ledge Lighthouse we see today about 1 mile offshore of Cohasset/Scituate was not the first attempt to place a lighthouse in those treacherous waters. The first lighthouse lasted a little more than a year when destroyed by a Nor’easter in April 1851. In 2007, the Massachusetts Board of Underwater Archaeological Resources (BUAR) in collaboration with the USCG and several other partners conducted surveys to locate and identify the remnants of the original lighthouse. Vic Mastone, BUAR’s Director and Chief Archaeologist, will describe these efforts which included remote sensing surveys technologies, remotely operated vehicle surveys, and diver investigation of the ledge.
