Day 1 ~ Arrive Chiclayo: Having arrived in
Chiclayo on your own, you’ll be met by your
guide, with whom you will begin a full day
excursion with a visit to the Tumbas Reales
Museum, north of Chiclayo in Lambayeque.
This state-of-the-art museum opened in 2002.
Shaped like a Moche pyramid, it contains the
archaeological remains of the Moche culture,
which existed in 100-750 A.A. After lunch
visit Tucume, an imposing complex of 26
mud brick pyramids surrounded by smaller
structures that served as the political and
religious center of the pre-Incan Lambayeque
culture. Return to Chiclayo to the Gran Hotel
Chiclayo. Overnight. (Breakfast, Chiclayo;
Lunch, Lambayeque; Accommodations, Chiclayo)
Day 2 ~ Chiclayo to Trujillo: After breakfast,
your morning excursion will take you to
the magnificent mud-brick burial platform
of Huaca Rajada. It was here that the
world-famous tomb of the Lord of Sipán
was discovered in 1987 by the Peruvian
archaeologist Walter Alva. The Lord of Sipán,
a warrior priest from the Moche civilization,
lived about 2,000 years ago on the coast of
Peru. He was buried along with a dazzling
array of gold artifacts studded with precious
stones. After seeing the on-site museum,
continue on to Pampa Grande, also known
as La Capilla, considered to be the largest
pyramid in South America. Return to your
hotel in Chiclayo. After a short rest, you’ll be
transferred to Trujillo, a 3-hour drive south
along the Pan American Highway, passing
through arid desert and fertile valleys. To the
west you will see the Pacific Ocean, with its
sandy beaches; to the east, the foothills of the
Andes.
You will arrive in the late afternoon
at Trujillo, a city founded in 1534 by
conquistador Francisco Pizarro, who named
it after his birthplace in Spain. Overnight.
(Breakfast, Chiclayo; Accommodations, Trujillo)
Day 3 ~ Depart Trujillo: After breakfast,
you’ll begin the city tour, stopping first in the
main square surrounded by brightly painted
Colonial mansions with lovely doorways,
balconies and courtyards. You’ll visit several
of these homes, then continue on to the San
Francisco Church and the Cathedral, with its
collection of paintings from the Quito School
of Painting. The city tour concluded with a
visit to the private Cassinelli Museum or the
University Museum. Next you will visit the
famous Huacas (temples) of the Sun and the
Moon.
Continue to Chan Chan, the ruins of the
largest adobe city in the world, located 2
miles north of Trujillo on the Pacific coast.
The site is composed of 9 different areas,
of which the best restored is the Tschudi
Citadel. The Chimus were expert metallists
in ancient Peru, and as a result of the Inca
conquest many of the artisans were taken to
Cuzco to teach their techniques. Visit the site
museum and the adobe ceremonial Temple
of the Dragon. Continue to the charming
seaside town of Huanchaco, where the
local fishermen still use reed boats as their
ancestors did centuries ago. Enjoy a leisurely
lunch before returning to Trujilllo, where you
will transfer to the airport to continue to your
next Avanti destination! (Breakfast, Trujillo;
lunch, Huanchaco)
