“The Other Emancipation of the 1860s:
Freeing Russia’s Serfs”
In February 1861, almost two years before President Lincoln's Emancipation
Proclamation, Tsar Alexander II issued a Manifesto initiating the process of freeing
Russia's 23 million serfs. This talk examines the “other emancipation” of the 1860s
and places it in comparative context.
