GRAPE PRICE TRACKER January 2016 Review January 2016 Review: European Wholesale Grape Prices The UK average wholesale grape price during January was equivalent to €2.45 per kg. This is a decrease of 16% from the prior month’s average of €2.90 per kg. During the month grape prices have been slightly volatile, with a high in the second week of €2.61 per kg, with the following week reporting the low of €2.31 per kg. Year on year, the UK wholesale price is relatively similar, down just 2%, from €2.59 per kg. The average wholesale grape price in the Netherlands during January was €2.16 per kg, this is a drop of 21% from December’s €2.72 per kg. Despite a monthly decrease, compared against the prior year, the current average wholesale price is up 7%, from €2.01 per kg. During January, the lowest price reported was during week 3 at €2.06 per kg, the month closed at a high of €2.29 per kg. Germany’s average wholesale grape price during January was €2.69 per kg. Compared against the previous year, this is an increase of 5%, from €2.56 per kg. Between December and January, the average grape price has increased 6%, from €2.54 per kg. During January, the second week reported the monthly high of €2.84 per kg, whilst the fourth week recorded the lowest at €2.48 per kg. This is a decline of 8% on December’s average price of £5.21 per kg. This drop in retail prices is due to retailers reducing the price on a number of their grapes during the month. Compared year on year, the current price is down just 2%, from £4.90 per kg. This average retail price of grapes in the UK is sourced from www.mysupermarket.com, and monitors the prices of all the major retailers as stated on-line. Prices for all grapes on sale are recorded, including all packsizes (loose to snack pack) and all ranges (value to premium). 1 GRAPE PRICE TRACKER January 2016 Review According to MIS retail data, mixed grapes replaced black grapes as being the most expensive grapes on the market during January. During this time, white grapes also replaced red grapes as being the lowest priced. Mixed grapes averaged at a price of £4.22 per kg during January, this was a very slight decline of just 1% from December’s average of £4.25 per kg. This is the smallest monthly drop reported by any of the varieties. During January, the lowest price was reported in the first week at £4.04 per kg, with the highest in the final week at £4.31 per kg. Compared against the prior year, the current price is 4% down from £4.38 per kg. The average price for Black grapes on the UK retail market during January was £4.02 per kg. This is a decline of 7% from the prior month’s average of £4.31 per kg. Year on year, the price is much more in line, at just 2% lower from £4.12 per kg. During January, the highest price was reported in the first week at £4.04 per kg, with the lowest in the final week at £3.91 per kg. The average retail price for Red grapes during January was £3.87 per kg, this is a decline of 3% year on year, from £4.03 per kg. Between December and January, the retail price declined 4% from £3.99 per kg. The first week of January reported the highest retail price of £3.97 per kg, with the following week recording the lowest at £3.81 per kg. White grapes had an average selling price during January of £3.84 per kg, this is just 1% down on the previous January’s £3.87 per kg. Between December and January, the retail price of white grapes declined 6%, from £4.08 per kg. During January, the third week reported the lowest price of £3.74 per kg, with the following week witnessing the monthly high of £3.93 per kg. MIS retail data, looks specifically at 500g, standard grape packs, allowing for comparison between the grape varieties. The data is gathered from in-store visits to all the major UK grocery retailers on a weekly basis. This is a decline of 15% from the prior months €4.31 per kg. During January a number of retailers have placed price promotions on their grape products, leading to this decline. Red grapes were the highest priced grapes during January, at €3.80 per kg, with white grapes at €3.47 per kg. The increase in sales was thanks to supermarket promotions, and consumer’s willingness to increase spending during this time. During this time, popular varieties include; Early Sweet, Prime, Flame and Midnight Beauty, with red varieties the most popular with consumers at the moment. Egypt is set to increase its import tariffs on a number of fresh produce categories, including grapes increasing by 30%. This decision has been made to help activate the Egyptian domestic market, by boosting this market share. 3 GRAPE PRICE TRACKER January 2016 Review Brazil has in the past imported nearly a third of all the grapes produced by the Argentinean region of San Juan. However, this season, volumes will fall by 10-15%, this follows previous falls of 8% in 2014/15 and 60% in 2013/14. In total, export volumes to Brazil have declined by an estimated 80%. The reason for this decline is Brazil’s demand for fruit to be applied with methyl bromide, where San Juan has no experience, and so fruit is in poor condition. The US port of Savannah in Georgia, has received its first shipment of grapes from Peru. The first shipments began arriving in November, and the port is set to become a major gateway in the Southeast for fresh produce. Australia is struggling to export its grapes and other fresh produce to Asia. This is due to freight routes being swamped by infant formula exports, which are paying a 35% premium to secure airfreight space. The retail price of imported fruit and other food products, in Korea is reported as being much more expensive than in other countries. Table grape retail prices are among the highest levels in the world. 4
