Cell Analogy - supernavage

Cell Analogy
Lesson Overview
Subject & Grade
Biology
Student Learning Goals
Learning
Objective
Students will demonstrate their understanding of how organelles function within a
cell.
Biology Standard 1: Cells
Standards
CLE 3210.1.1 Compare the structure and function of cellular organelles in both
prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
SPI 3210.1.1 Identify the cellular organelles associated with major cell processes.
Instructional Procedures
Sequence of
Activities
1. The students will compare parts of a eukaryotic cell to a topic of their choice.
Possible resources for cell information:
netTrekker (save, educational search engine): http://school.nettrekker.com
Grolier Encyclopedia: http://go-passport.grolier.com/
2. Students will then complete the “Cell Comparison Chart” found at the end of
this document.
3. Students will then complete a storyboard and script to organize their thoughts
and media. A sample storyboard can be found at
http://www.digitales.us/files/Story%20Boarding%20Template.pdf.
4. Students will then gather their media.
Possible sources for images and audio:
Pics4Learning: http://www.pics4learning.com/
World Images: http://worldimages.sjsu.edu/
FreePlayMusic: http://www.freeplaymusic.com/
5. Students will participate in a brief mini-lesson over how to use PhotoStory to
complete their analogy.
6. Students will then compile their images, text, voice, and music to complete a
video cell analogy.
The “Analogy of a cell Project” contained within this document offers a timeline for
this lesson.

ideas:
Compare and contrast the functions of a prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell by
completing an analogy for both cell types.
Write a paragraph about each organelle comparison.

Analogy of a Cell Project
You and your partner will be comparing the parts of a eukaryotic cell to something. It may be a car; it
may be a cruise ship, football stadium, etc. I have a list of ideas for you to pick from. Here’s the break
down for the project:
Day 1:
Choose topic for analogy
Decide how each cell organelle can be compared to your topic
Fill out Cell Comaprison Chart
Find the images of each required organelle
Find the images for the comparison place
*All images should be saved to your user drive or to a flashdrive!!!
Day 2:
Finish Finding images and write the script
Day 3:
Your tech coach will show you how to use Photostory- it’s awesome!
Upload pictures into Photostory
Day 4:
Record narration
Add music - no copywritten music is allowed- sorry!
Day 5:
Project is due to me. Please save in the correct folder for your class as follows:
Places to compare the cell to… Pick one or come up with your own!! Sign up with me!
Cruise ship
Factory
Shopping mall
Hogwarts
Amusement park
Airport
Zoo
Coffee Shop
Band
Car
Football stadium
Bikini Bottoms
Island
School or University
City
Office Building
Bakery or Café

Cell Comparison Chart
Comparison: __________________________________
You need to have 9 total organelles. You may pick any nine from the list below.
Organelle
Nucleus
Can be compared to
Because they both…
Endoplasmic reticulum
Ribosomes
Lysosomes
Golgi apparatus
Mitochondria
Plasma membrane
Cytoplasm
Cytoskeleton
Vacuole
Cell wall
Chloroplast
How many organelles did you choose??? You need 9!
For your script use this chart.
Ex: If you were doing a city…
The nucleus is like the mayor because s/he controls the city like the nucleus controls the cell.
