CREATE A CHARACTER
READ THIS:
You will be creating a child drawing. Using a coin, you will determine what your “child” will
look like and what gender it will be. Flip the coin to determine the genotypes for it. You will flip
the coin twice for each trait. The first flip will represent the allele (gene) you get from your
mom and the second flip will represent the allele you get from your dad. Every time you flip
heads it will represent a dominant allele which will be written by a capital letter. Every time
you flip tails it will represent a recessive allele which will be written by a lowercase letter.
Once you have determined what traits your “child” will have, you will then draw a picture of
the “child” based on the determined traits.
Directions for the lab:
1) Record the genotype, description, and the phenotype on the data table based on the
instructions on that sheet
2) Use the Phenotype reference sheet to help fill them out
3) Get a piece of white paper and write your name(s) on the bottom right hand corner of
the drawing
4) Draw the traits you flipped for as they would appear on your child’s 7th grade school
picture. You can look online to see what the traits look like or use the class reference
sheet. You may add “personality” to your child, but keep it school appropriate!
5) Name your child and write that name on the drawing
6) Have fun and be sure to turn in both the data table and the
drawing!
Grading for your Create a Kid

Picture is neat and colorful
/10

Student names are on bottom right hand corner of picture


For each trait on your data sheet you have recorded the
coin toss results and whether it is homo or heterozygous
/14
Picture resembles a boy or girl & your kid has a name

Name _______________________
Gender: determined by 2 coin tosses (2 heads or 2 tails = girl; 1 head + 1 tail = boy)
GENDER of child=___________
Genotype column: flip a coin twice for each one. If you get a heads, write a capital letter (you can pick which letter), If you get
tails, write a lower case letter. Write it like DD, dd, or Dd depending on which letter you chose for that trait.
Description column: If your genotype was a double capital letter (DD) write Homozygous Dominant,If your genotype was a
double lower case letter (dd) write Homozygous Recessive, If your genotype was a combination (Dd) write Heterozygous
Phenotype column: use the Phenotype Reference Page to complete. Write the physical trait that represents each genotype
