Edited 5-26-2015 Chemical Nomenclature Assignment #1 Background Reading: Gilbert, 2015. Sec. 2.4-2.5, pp. 50-57. Learning Goal 1: Be able to fill in the atomic numbers on a blank periodic table. To save time on test of quiz, use arrows (see example below) to indicate numbers of regions that increase without breaks. Learning Goal 2: Be able to indicate where on the periodic table metals, nonmetals and metalloids are found. If given a basic periodic table (atomic number, symbol and atomic weight only) be able to determine whether an element (given name of symbol) is a metal, nonmetal or metalloid. Metalloids are also referred to as semimetals: semimetal = metalloid. Learning Goal 3: Know the symbols and names for the elements (shown below). Given the symbol, be able to give the correctly spelled name or given the name be able to supply the symbol. Be able to correctly place the symbols of these elements in their correct positions on a blank periodic table. Tables listing the names of all elements can be found in most General Chemistry Texts. Learning Goal 4: Know the names and formulas of the following common compounds for. Common names and their associated formulas must be memorized. Usually the common name is preferred: for example: water is preferred to dihydrogen monoxide. Molecular compounds that go by common names. H2O water H2O2 hydrogen peroxide NH3 ammonia CH4 methane Leaning Goal 5: Be able to distinguish between molecular and ionic compounds See tutorial in Blackboard >Content>Nomenclature>Nomenclature Assignment 1 Resources.
