Insurance Institute of Southern Alberta
Annual Report - Fiscal Year April 2012 to March 2013
President’s Report
Kevin Callbeck, President
I am pleased to present our annual report, on behalf of the Insurance Institute of Southern Alberta.
The 2012/2013 term has been yet another successful one at the Insurance Institute of Southern
Alberta. That’s a significant achievement, considering that Council members give their time and
energy as volunteers, in addition to their responsibilities to their employers, and they maintain their
level of commitment while the industry undergoes change around us all.
Our Academic and CIP Society budgets both exceeded surplus expectations, our Seminar attendance
levels exceeded expectations, and we also offered more CIP classroom opportunities than initially
planned. To top it off, we offered social and networking opportunities as well, including the first event
in Lethbridge in years!
In addition to a number of ongoing activities to strengthen our operations, this was the first year that
the IISA offered non-voting Committee Invitee opportunities on Council to further engage and enlist
members into our operation, and we appreciate their involvement and their contributions. We will
continue to provide this opportunity and look for means to engage and involve our Invitees.
We also saw our Education Coordinator Katie Bastian take a maternity leave, which was temporarily
filled by Leigh Swainson for a number of months and now by Sallyann Isaac for the remainder of the
term. Our Manager, Caroline, has been very busy and we are all very fortunate to work with her – she
has done a great job for IISA along with Carlie Noland in an Administrative Coordinator capacity!
We have many reasons to be proud of the accomplishments of Council this past term. I’ll reiterate a
sentiment I included last year - leadership comes in many styles and from many sources on Council.
Each of us has something valuable to offer, and I encourage you to become involved on Council if you
aren’t already.
Our success would not have been possible except for our local staff, the dedication, hard work and
enthusiasm of all Council members and course instructors, and the support of our employers. I
express my sincere thank you to all of them, and I’m looking forward to watching IISA move forward in
the coming term!

*Free memberships are offered to retirees and to students in full time educational programs such as UofC, MRU, BVC ** Seminar Visitors refers to individuals who attend a seminar but don’t have a membership. IISA continues to offer a three‐tiered pricing model on most seminars: Graduate, Member, Non‐Member *** Seminar Promos mean special pricing (ie everyone pays the same registration fee regardless of membership status) ‐ nb some individuals who received this pricing may actually have had a membership ****Total Possible Members is our potential membership number if we forced membership on all Seminar Attendees. Membership is also not required for Social events. While we had a satisfactory year in membership, we did see a decline year over year by about 70
members. CIP course registrations were down by approximately the same amount and this likely
translated into lower membership numbers.
A strategic membership market for IISA is the complimentary memberships for students attending full
time educational programs (UofC, MRU, BVC). Fewer than expected students took advantage of this
offer and this also impacted our overall membership numbers. There is an interesting difference in
student uptake on this offer: Bow Valley College’s C11 class had great uptake but Mount Royal
University students were very uninterested. We will be working on improving this student engagement
going forward including engaging UofC students.
On the positive side, IISA Graduate memberships (CIP/FCIP) increased by approximately 70 renewals
year over year and came in at 1290. Despite the fact that a Local and CIP Society membership is
needed to use the designation letters, there is a pool of Graduates with expired memberships. This
could be because they have left the industry or for other valid reasons, but in October 2012 IISA
undertook a project to get in touch with non-renewed Grads and brought in approximately 50 late
renewals.

As is evident from the charts above, IISA’s student registration for a solid grouping of years (08-11)
was a solid 650 students. In 11/12 registrations rose to 710. Based off of our expectations we raised
our budget for the 12/13 year up from the solid 650 area to 670. Unfortunately in 12/13 we fell short of
both coming in with 607 students.
Possible contributing factors to not achieving the CIP student registration target:
 Enrollment in feeder insurance programs/majors at local universities/colleges in insurance
programs has not been growing
 There has been little or no growth in staff numbers in the industry, yet retirements continue
 More existing CIP members have achieved their CIP/FCIP designations

Virtual Classes
IISA
has
enthusiastically
continued with virtual class
offerings. In total, 18 (40%) of
our 46 classes were virtual or
virtual combo. Approximately
280 (46%) of our 607 students
were registered for virtual or
virtual combo classes. (nb –
one InHouse class was
delivered via the web and is
included in these figures)
To continue to improve our
virtual class offerings, IISA
introduced the option to allow
students to speak to the Instructors using multi-way audio. We promoted the benefits of multiway
audio to the web students but we did not force them to purchase a required headset ($25-$40) but
instead “strongly encouraged” them so they could fully participate.



Students have been slow to embrace the multiway audio opportunity
o Many students did not purchase the needed equipment
o With a large percentage of students not having the equipment, the few that did became
discouraged with the lack of uptake of the multiway audio opportunity and the lack of
participation by their fellow students and therefore many of them abandoned it too
There was feedback from those who persisted in using the multiway opportunity that it was a
great feature
Instructors might benefit from additional technical training using the feature and additional
coaching to help better engage the students with the multiway audio opportunity
Regarding online midterms and ensuring the validity of the proctoring process, the IISA has
implemented verification processes above the minimum national standards suggested by the
Insurance Institute of Canada to verify the online midterm proctor process (the nationally suggested
standard is to audit 10% of the proctors).


IISA has committed to sending a follow up email to 100% of the proctors
IISA will ensure a minimum of 30% of the proctors are fully audited (i.e. we will persist until we
get a response from this group of proctors).
InHouse and Offsite Classes
IISA has continued to work with employers to offer InHouse or Offsite courses:
 Intact InHouse (5 classes)
 TD InHouse (2 classes)
 Rogers InHouse (1 class)
 Rogers Offsite (2 classes)
 Cooperators Offsite (2 classes)
 AMA Lethbridge Offsite (1 class)
 Mooney Insurance Red Deer Offsite (1 class)

Formats and Delivery Method – Introductions and Reviews
We have had success with introducing 12-week Saturday morning web classes. We have also piloted
an InHouse 3xweek lunch class at Rogers.
We have had a few classes with lower than desired registration numbers and, while it is always greatly
appreciated to have an employer offer their space (especially for an Offsite course), we will be
analyzing venues to see if some are simply not attractive to a large number of students. We will also
be trying to determine if the delivery format has an impact on the number of registrations (i.e. is web
preferable to in-person).
Exam Review Sessions
We have continued offering complimentary end-of-semester half-day final exam review sessions via
the web (on Saturdays). Typically we offer C12 and C13 as they are most often spoken of as our most
difficult courses. We have invited IINA to join our students in these sessions which not only benefits
more students but also helps spread the $500/session fee. Distance Learning students for IISA &
IINA are also invited. We receive very good feedback about these sessions – but students almost
unanimously think these sessions should continue to be offered free-of-charge. As such, at this time it
has become a no-charge part of our value proposition.
We also continue to offer a free “semesterly” generic Study Tips webinar.
Instructors
After taking part in the interview, the panel presentation process, and the audit semester, we had four
new Instructors begin teaching in the 12-13 year (Fannie Au, Justine Holthe, Shawn Fisher, Katherine
Rumford).
For Spring 2013 we have implemented a new tiered Instructor compensation plan. It is based on two
tiers: Novice Instructor (6 or less classes taught) and Established Instructor (more than 6 classes
taught). Going forward, it is IISA’s plan to introduce a third and final level: Master Instructor (more
than 6 classes taught and has taken the national Insurance Institute of Canada Instructor Certification
Program)
Two IISA Instructors have participated in the pilot offering of the Institute of Canada’s Instructor
Certification program: Leah Strader-Goled and Barb Exton.
The end of this section contains a listing of IISA’s active Instructor roster for the 2012-2013 teaching
year.

Career Connections
Feed the Minds of Youth
In support of the Learning Partnership’s Take Our
Kids to Work DayTM, on November 7, 2012, IISA
hosted Feed the Minds of Youth where nine Grade
9’s and their parents were treated to a pizza lunch
and interesting insurance career stories and
games. The guest speakers were Rhawnie
Tremblay, Associate-Commercial Insurance from
Rogers Insurance, Jason Costen, Special
Investigations Unit from Intact, and Linda Buckton,
Client Manager from BFL Canada Insurance.
Between the three speakers Grade 9’s learned about broker topics, claims topics, and James Bondlike SIU topics. The Penny Game also gave the students an interactive demonstration of the insurance
pool and why it is so important to purchase insurance.
FTMOY is a wonderful opportunity for employees in the insurance industry to introduce their children
to what their parents do at the office and is very positive community exposure for the Insurance
Institute.
Career Connections Ambassadors
Our industry is full of diverse and interesting career opportunities and the individuals below are
determined to deliver that message to high school students, post secondary students, and career
transitioners. Getting this message out to people is becoming of increasing importance in light of the
demographic challenges our industry will be facing in the coming years. Whether delivering the
message to young career seekers at career fairs or university or college fairs, or through making a
connection with a grade 10 student at a high school presentation, these individuals are truly
ambassadors for the whole p&c industry.
Thank you to the following Ambassadors:

Career Connections Activities
Career Connections Ambassadors in Southern Alberta attended career fairs, delivered high school
presentations, and also attended other community events focussing on education or careers in the
p&c industry.
Career Connections is challenged in the Alberta area in booking high school presentations and it is the
hope that IISA can help better engage high school teachers.

The seminar offerings were well received by our members as indicated by the number of attendees
and event feedback. A number of exceptional industry and industry related professionals graciously
presented their expertise for a modest honorarium and IISA is very thankful for their generosity.
IISA successfully delivered our budgeted number of 23 seminars. We have continued to offer
seminars in Red Deer and Lethbridge. Of special note is a successful offering in Medicine Hat – the
first successful session in that city in years.
The chart above illustrates the impact of the “Seminar Visitor” on membership numbers as well as the
seminar revenue line. The seminar revenue line will be impacted positively as the Seminar Visitor
price is typically $40 higher than the Member price, while the membership revenue line will be
impacted negatively by $65 (price of a membership). Council reviews this each year and, with 70
people taking advantage of the “Seminar Visitor” pricing it appears that it is a desirable offering to the
industry.
Because of the value we place on assisting our students in their studying for the final exams, “No
charge” seminars are almost exclusively Study Tips sessions.

Convocation 2012 was a lovely event as usual and the Mimosa
Reception and Industry Trade Show was well received. The
jazz trio was, once again, exceptional and added greatly to the
classy atmosphere of the event.
Our Keynote Speaker was Jan M. Brownridge B.A. Hons., FCIP,
CRM, Vice President Property Department, Regional Manager,
Vancouver, Munich RE. For the remainder of the formal portion
of the event, Kevin Callbeck, President of the IISA, was the
Master of Ceremonies and Maurice Tulloch, BA (Econ), MBA,
CMA, Chair of the Board of Governors of the Insurance Institute of Canada presented.
Intact Insurance and The Co-operators once again graciously sponsored the Graduate photos and the
event programs, respectively, and Aviva sponsored the Jazz Trio. As well, we hosted an Industry
Trade Show in which Career Connections, Desjardins General Insurance Group, Wawanesa
Insurance, RSA, Mount Royal University, Rogers Insurance, ServiceMaster of Calgary, Cira Medical
Services, WICC, The Network Corporate Search Personnel, Intact Insurance, and MKA Canada all
took booths to honour and show their support for this year’s Graduates.
A noteworthy event at this year’s ceremony, Leah Strader-Goled,
FCIP, CRM, long time IISA Council volunteer and Instructor, was
presented with the Award of Merit. This award is presented to a
volunteer whose has demonstrated extraordinary support and
dedication to the Insurance Institute and it is the most prestigious
non-academic award conferred by the Board of Governors of the
Insurance Institute of Canada. Leah was presented the award by
Peter Hohman, MBA, FCIP, ICD.D, President & CEO of the
Insurance Institute of Canada.
National Education Week:
National Education Week saw the Institute visiting Rogers Insurance and Toole Peet Insurance to
promote the full gambit of IISA offerings. We also did a weeklong Trivia Contest that had about 450
entries and two Kobo eReaders as the prizes. A webinar was also held for Graduates interested in
becoming CIP instructors.

CIP Society Networking & Social Events:
On December 5, 2012, the Institute hosted a group of 70 people for the Barenaked Ladies and
Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra concert at the Jack Singer Auditorium. The pre-concert reception
was held at Teatro and was generously sponsored by Intact Insurance and Alberta Fire and Flood.
On December 20, 2012, the Institute hosted a seasonal group event, Tidings, at New West Theatre in
Lethbridge. The first event in several years for Lethbridge, we were thrilled to have 30 people attend.
The pre-event reception was fully sponsored by AMA Insurance.
Local Topics
Women in Insurance Cancer Crusade
IISA was honored to have been awarded the Golden Flame Award by WICC for our ongoing support
of their worthy cause.
Institute Staffing
In June 2012 Katie Bastian left IISA for maternity leave. Leigh Swainson was recruited to fill the role
but was unable to complete the term and left us approximately mid-way through Katie’s maternity
leave. At that point, Sallyann Isaac was recruited to fill the remainder of Katie’s leave. Carlie Noland
continues in her Administrative Coordinator role for three Institutes – three days a week for IISA and
one day a week for each of IISK and IIMB.
Understanding Serious Injury
IINA and IISA were presented with Ontario’s Understanding Serious Injury multi-day training session
with the contemplation that it could be a very valuable program to deliver in Alberta. IINA and IISA
have secured Council volunteers with a bodily injury background to review the material and to make
any recommendations as to changes that need to be made to “Alberta-ize” the sessions. We are
contemplating a Fall release of the program.
General Licensing Activity
The Alberta Insurance Council has introduced significant changes to the General licensing structure.
Of particular note is that the AIC has introduced a General Level 2 licensing exam. IISA, IINA, and the
Insurance Institute of Canada have been preparing a new General Level 2 Licensing Kit to assist
those studying for the new exam. A robust package of material due out in June 2013, the package will
consist of two CIP textbooks (C130 and C131), the already created Alberta Auto and A&S and Travel
Health supplements, and a new Level 2 supplement and online exam valid for 28 CE hours.
Mount Royal University
Through the BBA program (insurance minor), C11 classes appear to be relatively stable but additional
courses struggle for satisfactory registration numbers and some have been cancelled. Of those
students who take CIP courses though MRU, it is of concern that very few take advantage of
registering for the Institute’s CIP final exam in order to simultaneously get a credit towards their CIP.
Of the three CIP classes that ran at MRU in this past period (estimate 40 students), only four students
wrote the Institute CIP final exam.
Bow Valley College
BVC has continued to offer C11 in its Fall semester as part of its 2 year diploma program. Taught by
a shared Instructor, Thomas Ng, the BVC students are extremely engaged and of the approximate 10
students in the C11 course, 8 wrote the Institute final exam.

University of Calgary
For a number of years, students who met certain criteria and who graduated from the RMIN program
at UofC were eligible for a number of exceptions towards CIP credits. This did not hold true for
Graduates of the RMIF program who, in many cases, take a very similar classload. IISA has brought
this to the attention of the Insurance Institute of Canada and we hope to have a favourable resolution
soon.
