She has been an adjunct professor and is the author of four books. Her entire career has been spent trying to figure out the “knowing-doing” gap by working to help teachers put reading and writing research into practice in the classroom. She works with all levels of learners and loves sharing her success and failures with colleagues around the world so they too, can better serve students. Recently, Tovani worked with secondary English language learners from a high poverty district in Colorado. She is currently facilitating literacy labs in several different states to promote collaboration among colleagues. Videos will be shared of students breaking words apart with magnetic letters as well as in text. Tessa Allen P A-7 Reading in the Content Areas: Using a Hands-On Approach to Make Non-Fiction Meaningful Many students struggle to connect with non-fiction texts. Several don't understand the content it discusses so the task of reading becomes tedious. In this session, we will explore strategies to help make reading non-fiction meaningful and even (gasp) enjoyable! Toby Carpenter All A-1 What's the Big Idea: Helping Adolescent Readers Determine Importance in their Reading Purpose determines what's important. It also helps readers sift and sort what they pay attention to. Without a purpose for one's reading and teaching, it is difficult to determine what to give precious time to. During this workshop, teachers will explore the big ideas behind their content and curricula. Cris will also model different ways that teachers can help students determine importance in their reading. Are you wondering how to support students as they apply reading strategies to the texts they read on a screen? Cynthia Lord* All A-3 Purposeful Play: Igniting Deep and Powerful Learning Across the Day Too often play is set in direct opposition to work, when in reality, play is the engine of learning for children. This session will help teachers reclaim a playful and joyful spirit by teaching the myriad of ways play can be used to facilitate social-emotional and academic growth. This session will outline the ways play can be infused within a day, as well as the instructional strategies teachers can utilize to support children's learning. Teachers will learn how strategies like focused lessons, conferring, small group play, and whole class conversations can build literacy skills, STEM skills, and critical socialemotional skills. Charts and tools will be shared alongside lessons that can be used in classrooms. For teachers who use workshop model to plan and instruct, conferring is at the heart of their teaching. It is at this time that teachers can do their best differentiating. During this session, participants will explore ways to confer during student work time. Cris will also share ways to manage and use conferring to help students not only get unstuck, but to also revise and rework their reading and writing.
