SEACLIFF SCHOOL Volume: 12—2015 Newsletter Date: 27th August 2015 www.seacliff.sa.edu.au [email protected] Seacliff NAPLAN Success Continues! DIARY DATES 2015 24-08-15—28-08-15 BOOKWEEK 28-08-15 Friday Book week Parade 15-09-15 Tuesday Governing Council Meeting 7:30pm 21-09-15—25-09-15 SWIMMING WEEK I would like to thank the whole school community for working together to support our students in achieving high quality NAPLAN results in all cohorts. The Reading result for our Year 3 group is the highest for at least 3 years and will be up with the best in the state! Both the Year 5 and year 7 groups continued the trend of strong results in reading over the last five years. What is more amazing however is a particularly unique Numeracy result. In my experience the Reading results are nearly always higher than Numeracy for all cohorts in all schools. However at Seacliff PS both the Year 5 and Year 7 groups achieved a higher mean score in Numeracy than Reading! This rarely, if ever happens! Research shows that a student being proficient in numeracy is the strongest indicator of being successful adults. In that case the Seacliff school community is certainly giving our kids every chance! Table showing NAPLAN Mean scores for Seacliff PS in 2015 Reading Numeracy Year 3 (any score around 400-420 is great) Change from previous year Year 5 (any score around 480-500 is great) Change from previous year Year 7 (any score around 540-550 is great) Change from previous year 451.7 +32 510.7 +7 548.9 395 +6 512.7 +15.5 556.8 -1 +13.6 A change of 14 points is significant and is worth investigating the reasons. As you can see the results for our cohorts are positive changes. We believe this is due to the emphasis on problem solving and reasoning in maths lessons as well as the intervention strategies we use for many of our students. Table showing NAPLAN Mean scores as Proficiency Band for Seacliff PS in 2015 Year 3 Year 5 Year 7 DECD Target Level= 3 DECD Target Level= 5 DECD Target Level= 6 Reading 5 6 Numeracy 4 6 7 7 DECD set Proficiency level targets for the 3 year levels. As you can see students at Seacliff generally exceed these targets. We are very proud of these results and it inspires us to “Aim High and Reach for the Stars!” SEACLIFF SCHOOL Page 2 “The Voice” Comes to Seacliff Renee Pounsett from “Team Maddern” on this year’s “The Voice” entertained staff and students during last Tuesday’s lunch break. She performed a 30 minute set of popular songs including a duet with Ruby singing Jesse J’s, “Flashlight”. She then visited several of our classes to meet and greet the students and in the process signed hundreds of autographs. We thank Renee for sharing her amazing talents with us and wish her every success in her musical career. Hats are Back on Tuesday1st September UV radiation will be on the rise in the coming weeks. Once UV radiation reaches a level of 3 it is strong enough to damage unprotected skin. So it’s time to grab your hat and sunscreen and protect your skin. Students will be required to wear hats at recess, lunch and during outdoor lessons commencing next week. Community Support: School Uniforms Lost Property Thank you very much to Kerryn Berry for volunteering her time to reorganise and sort the lost property. Kerryn sorted all of the named lost property (mainly school jumpers and jackets) into class bundles allowing these items to be returned to their owners. Unfortunately there is still a considerable amount of unnamed clothing remaining in lost property. Some of it has been here for a long time so a decision has been made to allow families to access it in exchange for a small donation. Kerryn has washed and folded all of these items so if you are interested please see the front office staff. Thanks Kerryn – we appreciate your efforts. Football Jumper/ Soccer Shirt Return With football and soccer seasons reaching their conclusions it is time to return playing tops. Thank you to those who returned their tops to their coaches or at the front office. If you haven’t can you please do so as soon as possible so they can be sorted and stored for use in 2016. Sport Trophies With the winter sport seasons coming to an end team trophy orders are now being finalised. Many families have not however, paid their sport fees. Trophies will only be provided to students whose fees have been paid so we ask that all payment are finalised by the end of next week. SEACLIFF SCHOOL Page 3 THE EYES HAVE IT! Last week after recess, Cat Leonard (Patrice’s mum!) worked with room 0 children. She taught us how to draw eyes. We used both tracing and copying techniques. For the tracing technique, we got some pictures of eyes, then coloured the back of the picture with oil pastels. Then we turned over the paper back to the print side, and traced over the parts that we needed with a sharp pencil. When we lifted the picture print off the drawing paper, we saw the outline of the eye in colour. Then we used charcoal, oil pastels, and chalk to draw and colour the detail. We mixed colours to make the colour look like the eye. A really cool technique was using the erasers to draw over charcoal and using white chalk to cover charcoal first. We learned that eyes look real if they have a white speck that makes it look wet. By Evette, Patrice and Blake - Room 0 Safety Concerns It has been noted that some students have been leaving the school grounds prior to the 8-55am bell to make purchases at the IGA store adjacent to the school. This behaviour has the potential to cause serious safety issues and recently we had a near miss. Once at school all children are expected to stay within the school grounds. This ensures they are properly supervised and safe. Can you please reinforce this with your children. SAPSASA VOLLEYBALL On Monday the 17th of August 12 teams from Seacliff Primary School participated in the indoor SAPSASA volleyball carnival at Marion Leisure Centre. 31 schools from across the state participated in the carnival. The matches were intense. All of our teams did their best and played strongly. Four teams from Seacliff Primary School made it through to the finals. Good luck! Thankyou Lauren Thomas, Anna Theodosi and Leah Cece for supporting the teams. Page 4 SEACLIFF SCHOOL Room 14 Concert Last Tuesday night the students in Room 14 bedazzled their audience with an amazing concert. The concert provided an excellent platform for them to showcase their talents. The acts ranged from a play called “Macbeth in 5 Minutes” to Nick and Noah performing an Abbott and Costello comedy classic. We had stilt walkers, dancers, musicians, circus performers, comedians and actors. The concert was highly entertaining. The audience even got to learn about the beautiful but endangered native fish that live in the Murray River. The season began with many new faces and first-time coach Ben Simpson at the helm. However, it wasn’t long before the players discovered the art of teamwork and the goals soon flowed. From just the first match against Immanuel, the young Sharks gained the confidence to boot about 10 goals in the second half, kick-starting a highly successful and enjoyable season. Highlights included playing brilliantly under lights at Glenelg Oval against Our Lady of Grace, despite the match going well past the players’ bed time, a great performance away against Westminster and the season finale in the fog and mud at Sheidow Park. All players contributed well to the side’s success and improved their skills over the course of the season, thanks to energetic Tuesday afternoon training sessions. Thomas and Dylan showed dazzling all-round ability while a fierce attack on the ball was a feature of Angus and Lachlan’s games. Taj displayed fantastic marking skills, Robert and Jed were sharp-shooters in front of goal while Nate, Max and Caleb proved that you don’t have to be the biggest kid on the team to kick the ball a long way. Thomas N and Evan used their height to advantage in the ruck while Cooper, Hudson and Blake showed great promise in the early part of the season. Special thanks must go to Ben for being an inspirational coach and to all the parents for their support. CANTEEN NEWS We would like to send out a huge thanks to the company “Mrs Macs” for the generous donation of a pie warmer to the canteen. This will be a very useful appliance .
