Syllabus: English III Regular and Honors
Welcome to your third year of high school! As your English teacher, I am pleased to
have you in my class. I know that each of you will work hard during the coming school
year to learn the course material and to improve your skills. Please read the following
information about the course curriculum and the behavior expected of all students while
in this class. I look forward to getting to know each one of you.
Course Description: This course promotes excellence in English language arts through
enriched experiences through the strands of the reading process, literary analysis, writing
process, writing applications, communication, and information and media literacy.
Instructions includes frequent practice in writing various types of multi-paragraph essays,
including documented papers; written and oral analysis of American literature
representing the ethnic and cultural diversity of the American experience; and analysis of
American dialects reflected in the literature. Reference skills and methods of
summarizing are taught in the production of documented papers/projects. All phases of
the writing process are utilized where appropriate (prewriting, drafting, revising, editing,
and publishing.) Formal and informal speech experiences are provided. Technology is
incorporated into all aspects of the course.

Note to Students and Parents: The teacher reserves the right to add to or delete any
work of literature in the above curriculum guide or to change the sequence of their
presentation in order to meet the objectives of this course.
In addition, students will work on vocabulary (academic and SAT preparation),
grammar skills, and writing in various modes.
Grades: The grading scale for high school students throughout the State of Florida
is as follows:

Rules of the Classroom

Arrive on time and prepared for class.

Cell phones, MP3 players, and other electronic devices are not allowed.

Bathroom use is limited per student with permission from teacher. Students
may not leave room during the first 15 minutes of class or the last 15
minutes of class unless requested by the office.
Raise your hand to be called upon by the teacher before speaking.
Keep all personal items under your chair and out of the aisle.
Full credit will not be given for late homework. Assignments that are late
will earn a maximum of half credit.
The class web site should be used to find out about work missed when
absent as well as announcements and posted assignments.
All rules and policies stated in the Code of Student Conduct handbook will
be enforced.
Plagiarism:
Definition – According to Webster’s dictionary, “plagiarism is to
appropriate and pass off as one’s own (the writings, ideas, etc. of another);
to appropriate and use passages, ideas, etc. of someone else.” If anyone is
caught plagiarizing in their writing, they will receive a zero on that
assignment. Again, plagiarizing is copying another person’s writing
without citation and pretending that that writing is your own. Be smart;
give credit to those who deserve credit. Don’t make this an issue.
****Cheating is a forfeiture of all credit.
***School Board of Broward County Dress code policy will be enforced.
***Attendance and punctuality are very important habits for student
success; therefore, excessive absences and tardiness will be addressed
with consequences. Unexcused absences will be detrimental to grade.
