Donation Form Name Address “I remember Bill Wilson’s Mercantile classes in Old College, not only because they were excellent lectures, but also because this is where I got to know my husband, along with many of the people I still count as friends. Gifting two seats in the oldest lecture theatre in Old College is a tangible reminder of that.” JACQUELYN MACLENNAN, LLB (HONS), 1983 Why 1789? Two hundred and twenty-five years ago, on the 16th November 1789, the University laid the Foundation stone for Old College and took the first step on a long road of housing its students, academics and faculties within one iconic building. In 1789 the needs of the Law Faculty within the new building were humble, requiring just “two small rooms, one for Civil Law and one for Scotch Law”. From this modest occupancy of the building the Law School has now spread over the whole northern side of Old College. Edinburgh is rightly proud that it is the only Law School in the UK to have its home in the architectural centre of its University; its history, and that of its alumni, is bound into the very fabric of the building.
