T E AT R O V I S TA WO U L D L I K E TO T H A N K I T S G E N E R O U S S U P P O R T E R S Season Headline Sponsors 2 Teatro Vista ABOUT THE PL AY Kendra Miller, our production dramaturg for The Wolf at the End of the Block, sat down with Ike Holter for an interview regarding his new play. KM: Where did “Wolf” come from? IH: I started writing this play when we had a different president, the nation had a different mood, and the fears that now take up a lot of our brain space were, back then, ideas much more in the line of science fiction than everyday fact. KM: How has the play changed since then? IH: The play has changed a lot since we jumped into rehearsal, and as crazy as the world is--and it’s incredibly insane right now--there’s something very cool about knowing the audience is smart. We don’t have to touch things on the nose. Everyone in the same room knows what’s being implied, what’s being said underneath. We’re all in a similar place right now. KM: What was your process like in the rehearsal room? IH: As someone who only works on new plays, I need the ideas and energy of everyone in the room: I continually work with some of the same collaborators because we recognize the weird nature of creating new work and have an expedited process. I’ve been working with Gabe in several different capacities for the better part of about 10 years. He’s one of the most flexible, fast, giving and intelligent actors around. The Wolf at the End of the Block 3 ABOUT THE PL AY c o n t. KM: ”Wolf” takes place in the same Chicago neighborhood as some of your previous plays, where does it fit into that universe? IH: ”Wolf” comes directly after “Prowess” and before “Lottery Day” (a play currently in workshops at Goodman Theater). “Wolf” deals with the people trying to make a life in this place directly after “Prowess” tried to change the neighborhood (spoiler alert: they were not entirely successful). There are 7 plays in this Chicago cycle, and the situations of each play carry over in the next one; there are Easter eggs and character name drops and some setups for stories that haven’t been told yet; you do NOT have to have seen the other plays, but I think it’s fun to know that these stories exist on a much bigger canvas. All the plays deal with a large group of people in a similar moment in time wrestling with some of the same themes. This is the 4th chapter, and there are 3 more to go: commissions by Victory Gardens, by The Goodman, and by Writer’s Theater. KM: This collaboration with Teatro Vista is a new relationship, what was that process like? IH: This process has been great because I’ve finally gotten to work with a lot of other great actors and designers and people whose work I’ve loved from the audience, and finally getting to work with Ricardo after loving shows by Teatro Vista has been awesome. KM: You often use music and specific songs in your work, and to great effect in “Wolf”. What were you listening to when you wrote the play? IH: I listen to the same music over and over again, and the soundtrack for “Wolf” has a lot of Frank Sinatra, Fiona Apple, Pharell, Anderson Paak, Aimee Mann and people like Billy Preston on there; it’s a remixed take on an old genre. KM: If you could write a show with any other artists out there right now, who would be in the room? IH: I would love to do a musical with Janelle Monae and Riz Ahmed! 4 Teatro Vista R E H E A R S A L P H O TO S | PHOTOG R APH Y BY L AU R E N KINC AID - FILB E Y Bear Bellinger and Jim Farruggio Gabe Ruiz Sandra Márquez and Ayssette Muñoz The Wolf at the End of the Block 5 WHO’S WHO IN THE CAST Raphael Diaz 6 Teatro Vista Sandra Márquez Gabriel Ruiz Ayssette Muñóz Bear Bellinger James D. Teatro Vista 14 T E AT R O V I S TA HISTORY & MISSION Teatro Vista produces, develops and commissions plays that explore the wealth and variety of the human experience from a Latino perspective for all Chicagoans to enjoy. The company provides work and professional advancement opportunities for Latino theater artists, with special emphasis on utilizing the talents of the company’s Ensemble Members. Furthermore, Teatro Vista seeks to enhance the academic performance of Chicago students through its Educational Outreach program which serves over 3,000 students annually. The company was founded in 1990 by Edward Torres and Henry Godinez with the goal of bringing a diverse repertory of plays to Chicago as well as to address the lack of opportunities available to Latino actors. Torres and Godinez sought to cast Latino actors in roles that they have not traditionally been offered by other theaters. With these goals as organizational principles, Teatro Vista has become one of the nation’s leading Latino Equity theater companies. It has produced over 60 productions including 16 World Premieres, 14 Chicago Premieres and commissioned numerous plays. Today, the company is led with great vitality by Executive Artistic Director, Ricardo Gutiérrez. The company was recently named one of “Chicago’s Cultural Leaders” by the Arts & Business Council and received the League of Chicago Theatre’s Artistic Leadership Award.
