This year, however, each concert will focus on one period in music history. The December concert will explore the glories of the Renaissance, offering significant motets from the leading composers of the day. Grand motets by Gabrieli, Praetorius, Lassus, and others will accompany our featured work, Missa O magnum mysterium by Tomás Luis de Victoria, a mass based on his sublime Christmas anthem, O magnum mysterium. This concert promises to be an ethereal way to enter into the Christmas season. In February/March we will honor the king of classical music with a program featuring three of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's most delightful works for chorus, soloists and orchestra. The concert will open with the short, celebratory Regina Coeli K. 276 and the wonderful Coronation Mass K. 317. Then the Solemn Vespers, more correctly called Vesperae solemnes de confessor K.339 which is one of my favorite works from the period. All three include a quartet of soloists and we have engaged some of the leading singers on the Bay Area music scene to join us: Ann Moss, Janet Campbell, Corey Head, and Jeff Fields. Accompanying us will be the Jubilate Orchestra of period instruments including classical woodwinds, which sound at A430. You won't want to miss this extravaganza! Our June concert will explore the ways in which contemporary composers set verses of the world's great poetry. But don’t let the idea of “new music” scare you! Fifty years after the heyday of serialism and experimental techniques, composers in our era write music that is beautiful to listen to, expressive and sensitive to the text. Our featured work, written in 1939, before the musical experimentation of the mid-Twentieth Century, is Six Chansons by Paul Hindemith, a setting of poetry of Reiner Maria Rilke. Other poets represented include Emma Lou Diemer with a song cycle of Omar Khayyám’s verses from the Rubáiyát, as well as William Shakespeare, Sara Teasdale and e. e. cummings, as set by leading composers of our day including Eric Whitacre, Frank Ticheli and myself.
