Difficult times offer a great opportunity to
look at new or under-developed prospects.
Hello and welcome to the second
edition of Fortis magazine.
It gives me great pleasure as the
former Managing Director of
SIG Construction Accessories to have
the opportunity to contribute to this
magazine. The first edition was a
resounding success and more than
achieved its goal of being a true voice
to focus on the real specialism and
opportunities for our construction
accessories business.
The construction industry is often
swamped with stories of decline and
looking across the overall SIG
portfolio of products, the markets are
extremely tight, with a lack of major
building projects. However, difficult
times are also a great opportunity to
look at new or under-developed
prospects.
For example, there is significant,
mainly public funded, investment in
many sectors that are at the heart of
our markets and product portfolio for
construction accessories; the
opportunity is huge and we must be
ready to capitalise on this.
Two examples of where major
investment has recently been
announced are in the rail and
nuclear sectors.
In the nuclear sector there is a £6
billion investment programme for the
decommissioning of existing stock
across twelve sites and construction
of new buildings. This will be across
the UK with huge projects at Hinkley
Point in Somerset and Sellafield in
Cumbria. To put this into context, we
have just priced a £1.5 million
package for waterproofing at Hinkley
Point power station.
The second example of a recent
announcement of investment is
Network Rail unveiling plans to invest
£37.5 billion to develop the UK’s
railway network over a five year
period.
Included in this is:
• £600 million spend on protecting
tracks and bridges against floods
and heat waves
• £1 billion spend on improving the
network in the South and West
• Station improvement projects
across the network.
David Hope, Northern Regional Managing
Director, SIG Distribution
The opportunity for supply into this
sector is huge and will require
support from a wide range of
products from geotextiles to masonry
support to concrete repair and
accessories.
The industry needs to ensure it is
equipped to deal with these
opportunities and the key to this will
be the service we offer. The service
will not just be the stock we hold and
how we get the product right, first
time and in full to the site; but equally
important are our technical skills,
working closely with the customer
base to engineer the best solutions.
SIG CA are market leaders with true
national coverage; the opportunity is
ours to take. We are committed to
growth and we will continue to invest
in our people and stock and work
closely with market leading brands.

SIG CA Welcomes Waterproofing
Business Development Manager
Nick Smith to the Team
In October 2012, SIG Construction Accessories was
delighted to bring waterproofing expert Nick Smith
on-board. Nick is the Waterproofing Business
Development Manager and he brings 12 years of
waterproofing experience to SIG CA, after working at
Fosroc as a Senior Area Sales Manager. Fosroc
specialises in manufacturing waterproofing in-situ
membranes so Nick brings a unique manufacturing
insight to his new role.
Nick is wasting no time in developing his new role.
Nick’s primary aim is to develop new and strengthen
existing relationships with customers and suppliers.
He has already received plenty of positive feedback
on his position from contractors and manufacturers
who have welcomed the formation of this new role.
SIG CA have a unique advantage over competitors
now Nick is on-board, as no other distributor has
anyone in a similar role, which gives SIG CA the
chance to lead the way in waterproofing.
Nick was attracted to SIG CA as it is a wellestablished, well respected and forward thinking
company. Nick said:
One of Nick’s passions is educating others in
waterproofing products and techniques.
In conjunction with the Category Management
and Training Department, Nick has helped to
develop a training module, utilising the main
waterproofing suppliers, to train internal and
external staff, which began in May 2013.
“As an ex-representative of a
manufacturer, I worked closely with
SIG CA in the past and saw how dedicated
SIG CA’s people are. I like a challenge and
as this is a new role, I will bring my own
ideas and insight to it and continue to
increase market share.”
By developing relationships with groundworkers and
contractors, and promoting waterproofing to
suppliers, Nick is confident that waterproofing’s
profile will grow to the same level as other areas of
SIG CA, such as concrete repair.
Nick Smith, Waterproofing Business Development Manager
To contact Nick for further information about this new role please email [email protected] or call 07711 925516.
National Advertising Campaign
for SIG Construction Accessories
SIG CA are moving through 2013 in great style with a full advertising campaign
in the national publication Construction News. The adverts focus on SIG CA’s
specialist divisions of waterproofing, concrete repair, geotechnical, masonry and
chemicals as well as a separate advert which includes SIG CAs’ key suppliers.

Behind the counter
at SIG Construction
Accessories Ash Vale
However, they have always shown
100% dedication and a strong team
spirit and I’m sure that will continue
to be the case long into the future.
We will always maintain our promise
of ensuring the customers get a first
class service.”
SIG CA Ash Vale team
SIG Construction Accessories Ash
Vale is one of the busiest SIG CA
branches as it serves Surrey,
Middlesex, Berkshire, Hertfordshire,
Oxford, the South West and West
London areas. Originally a branch of
Buildspan, which was in operation
from 1990, SIG CA took over the
branch in 2007.
Branch Director Violet Hancock
moved to Ash Vale in 2008 after
managing SIG Construction
Accessories’ Heathrow branch, where
she started work in 1985.
Today, Violet manages a team of 21
people and between them all they
have over 200 years of experience.
Every team member is determined to
follow the branch’s mission
statement: “To be the customers’
number one choice”.
Violet says, “The team has been
through some major changes and
tough times, particularly in 2012.
SIG CA Ash Vale is a large branch
which sits on a 1.5 acre site, with an
inventory of eight vehicles and over
1100 product lines in stock. In 2011,
the trade counter at Ash Vale was
redeveloped to encourage collection
trade to match the branch’s busy
delivery schedule.
2012 was an exciting year for the
branch as the team was involved in a
number of high profile projects
including supplying products for the
refurbishment of a number of London
stations including Paddington, King’s
Cross and Bond Street, as well as
Terminal 2 at Heathrow Airport. In
addition to these projects, the branch
also worked on the Atomic Weapon
Establishment in Burghfield, the
branch’s largest project last year,
where they supplied over £300K of
products. During this project the
branch ensured Bam Nuttall complied
with the Ministry of Defence’s quality
assurance to ensure all products had
traceability.
The team at Ash Vale is looking
forward to continuing to provide
customers with the best service
possible in 2013.
SIG CA Opens Two New Branches
SIG Construction
Accessories has increased
its nationwide coverage
with new branches in
Norwich and Bedford.
The new branches have been opened in established
multi-brand sites to provide local customers with
access to the full range of SIG brands within one
location. This has proved to be a successful formula
nationwide and has allowed each business to make
the most of local opportunities.
The existing branches had plenty of room to
welcome SIG CA businesses, including ample
warehouse storage and yard space to store the
products needed by a thriving construction
accessories business.
The opening of a local branch in Bedford and
Norwich enhances the services SIG CA give to the
4
FORTIS
local contractors and businesses working in each
area. Although SIG CA has always served these
areas, having a local base with in-house stock has
already proved to be a success. Since the branches
opened at the beginning of January, customers
have used the sites for collections in addition to the
delivery service provided.
The two branches were opened by a small
dedicated team who will cover the sales functions
for both locations. The team is led by Mark Gray,
Business Development Manager, who is supported
by Paul Monton and Andrea Barrett in the sales
office. The team has extensive experience within the
groundworks and specialist applicator markets and
Norwich
Bedford
have come together to actively promote and build
the businesses in Norwich and Bedford. Existing
staff working across the other SIG brands will
support these efforts in providing warehouse and
transport facilities.
Early results have seen SIG CA receive enquiries for
some of the larger projects in the area and enjoy
several successes in winning sizeable orders for
these projects.
To contact these branches, call 01603 224 899 for
Norwich and 01234 268 427 for Bedford.

Richard is supported by a team of
five who, between them, have over
40 years of experience in the
geotechnical industry. The team has
recently grown as Amanda Downey

completed by Sales Office Manager
Mark Gillies, Business Development

McMail and Helen Hill, Internal

The team regularly make site visits to
meet customers and offer tailored
advice, as well as continually keeping
an eye on the market to source new
and innovative products which will
benefit customers. Some of the
typical products the Geotechnical
Team can advise on and source
include geogrids, geotextiles,
erosion control, plastic paviors and
drainage channels.
One of the current projects the team
is involved in is the £140 million
Thames Water upgrade at Mogden
Sewage Treatment Works in West
London. The project aims to extend
sewage treatment capacity by 50%
so the Works can cope with heavy
rainfall. This project involves installing
new equipment and upgrading the
existing plant. To make space for the
new equipment included in the
upgrade, the project involves
reshaping the Western embankment,
which is within the Works existing site
boundary. Geotechnical Centre
designed and supplied materials for a
reinforced wall made from displaced
soil material from the site.
The original design used concrete
gravity walls which are costly and
time consuming to construct.
Working closely with Naue, the
geogrid manufacturers, a design was
produced using soil from the site to
construct three geogrid reinforced
walls (over 13 metres in places) with
an inclination of 70 degrees. So far
the Geotechnical Centre has supplied
over £250,000 worth of materials to
the site over the last two years.

Brickforce, Bricktor and Bricktie are all market leading brands
from Bekaert, which are widely specified by UK Consulting
Engineers for solving masonry construction problems and
carried ex-stock by SIG CA across the UK. In 2012, Bekaert
masonry reinforcement supplied by SIG CA in the UK topped
over 300 miles in length and continues to perform strongly.
Bekaert, Brickforce and Bricktor have been used to solve
masonry construction problems for more than 100 years in
the UK and continue to be the leading brands and quality
references for masonry reinforcement. Summer 2013 sees
the adoption of CE Quality Marks, as required by the
Construction Products Directive. Brickforce already has a CE

Specialist advice
As with any construction process, the
quality of the materials used and the
level of workmanship will have a
massive impact on the durability and
finished look of a structure. Poor
performing materials can lead to
brickwork slipping or cracking for
example, whereas poor workmanship
can cause problems such as changes
in cavity size. Specialist brickwork
accessory suppliers guide contractors
through the process of selecting
brickwork accessories. By acting as
project managers who liaise with
manufacturers, buyers, architects and
engineers, this ensures the correct
products are selected and supplied to
site on time.
Specialist advice can include a
takeoff service for all brickwork
related sundries including insulation
and site measuring services and
advice on remedial work if required.
Specialist brickwork accessory
suppliers can also check the channel
cast in-situ is the correct size and
type. They also check that the cast is

manufacturer’s specification and that
it does not clash or interfere with
other features such as balcony

The relationship the project manager
has with the architect, engineer, site
manager and designer is crucial. The
project manager coordinates the
design process and ensures any

of floors, fixing details or cavity sizes.
Even the smallest change to the

SIG Construction Accessories
worked alongside contractors Durkan to
build new hospital accommodation for
Central Middlesex Hospital.
For many projects, SIG CA do much more than
just provide building accessories to assist with a
build. The £20 million Local Housing Association
project for Central Middlesex Hospital is an
example of how the SIG CA team also bring their
expertise and industry experience to building
projects. The prestigious Central Middlesex
Hospital project consisted of building new
accommodation comprising 145 rooms for
hospital staff and the general public. Project
managers Durkan Limited looked to SIG CA to
source materials and provide technical support
for the project.
The established working relationship and trust
between Durkan and SIG CA meant that SIG CA
was the obvious choice for this project. SIG CA
provided support on every aspect of the project
from the groundwork to the brickwork, working
with the contractors on every stage of the
project. Harry Bhachu of SIG CA Ruislip brought
in his trusted contacts in the building industry
including brick specialists Ancon and Progressive
Builders and groundwork experts Modebest to
supply the masonry support systems to the
project. SIG CA took a hands-on approach to the
work and Harry worked closely with the Ancon
Project Team Manager Mick Beresford from the
outset to assist with technical and layout
drawings. Harry and the SIG CA team visited the
site twice a week to assist the contractors and
support the project manager.
Harry said “Working with Durkan and all the
parties involved was very exciting in terms of our
input into the technical design of the project and
ensuring the project didn’t incur any delays.
Central Middlesex Hospital has been one the
most interesting projects I’ve worked on as I
have been involved from start to finish and
overseen every stage of the project.”
SIG CA’s experience meant that the team was
able to identify issues and advise on all aspects
of the project including guiding suppliers on the
best way to handle the small site entrance.
Although the site was large, the actual entrance
was very small so SIG CA recommended Ancon
used flatbed vehicles and timed deliveries to
transport the supplies.

Douglas Oak, Operations Manager at
Woodmace said, “We can gain
significant competitive advantage
through working closely with our
suppliers. Just how effective this
process is ultimately depends upon
how much time and effort is placed by
the supplier into understanding the
project’s requirements and restrictions,
and developing and maintaining ongoing communications. SIG allocated
sufficient resource and time to enable
this to happen and we subsequently
realised a number of benefits as a
result. These benefits included better
use of space on site, timely delivery of
materials, and consequently an overall
more reliable programme and cost
effective project delivery.”

Geoflow 12 (Geocomposite) - 6875m2
The project was worth well over £75,000 to SIG CA, making this a high value
project on an exciting and historic tourist site.
Specialist products, right for the job
The products for this project had to be carefully chosen as the ground around Stonehenge is home to
numerous ancient burial sites and monoliths so the products selected had to be minimally disruptive.
Combigrid 30/30 was specified as it is a combination of a 30kn geogrid and a 150 gram per m2 geotextile
which makes it ideal for ground stabilisation. It reduces the amount of stone that is needed to stabilise the
ground, which offers a large cost saving and keeps disruption of the ancient ground to a minimum.

Commercial Road, Tower Hamlets
The lead contractor on the project
asked SIG CA to source and provide a
range of brickwork accessories for the
project. SIG CA contacted the architects
and engineers to request relevant

all the concrete related materials
including shear connectors,
balcony connectors, channel,
Ancon Ezi Strip, chemical anchors
and tanking membranes.
As well as supplying the products
SIG CA also visited the site regularly
for inspection of channel and balcony

as per manufacturers design. In
addition to this, SIG CA responded to
calls from the team on site in order to
give advice and practical help where
solutions were required at various

STRENGTHENING THE
FORTH ROAD BRIDGE
The Forth Road Bridge in
Scotland is one of the most
famous bridges in the UK,
connecting Edinburgh at South
Queensferry to Fife in North
Queensferry. Originally opened in
1964, this busy suspension
bridge is used by over 65,000
vehicles every day. In 2010, main
contractor Balfour Beatty Civil
Engineering was awarded the
contract to replace the bearings
on the approach viaducts of the
bridge. The steel bearings sit on
top of the approach viaducts and
allow the deck to move and
accommodate changes in
temperature and traffic load.
Therefore the bearings, and
consequently the surrounding
concrete and grout, receive
constant wear and tear. Work on
the project took two years to
complete and the SIG
Construction Accessories
Concrete Repair Centre had a key
role in supplying the materials
which would support the new
bearings.
The SIG CA Concrete Repair
Centre was awarded the supply
order as they already had a
strong relationship with existing
subcontractor Freyssinet Makers.
Both companies had worked
together on a previous project
where the SIG CA Concrete
Repair Centre supplied materials
to Cromarty Bridge near Dingwall

helping the customer to maximise
economies and achieve
deliverables on the project.
The road bridge is one of the
busiest in Scotland, as it's the
main route from North East
Scotland to Edinburgh and the
main link to Edinburgh Airport.
For this reason, access was
always going to be an issue.
Unscheduled disruptions were
avoided by careful planning and
clear communication between the
SIG CA Concrete Repair Centre
and Freyssinet Makers' Site
Engineer Scott MacDonald and
Area Manager Paul Wood.
The site had restrictions due to its
location under the bridge's south
side, which also meant the onsite storage capacity for
construction materials was

companies worked closely
together to ensure that maximum
economies were maintained and
a stock of materials were
conditioned, held and called off
when required to support the
fluctuating seasonal progress on

maintain project deliverables,
reduce wastage and complete the
project on budget and in time.”
Gordon Hart, SIG CA Senior Sales

New Reservoir
in Aylesford
In July 2011, work began on a
£2 million service reservoir to supply
the Maidstone, Larkfield and
Aylesford areas with water. Unlike a
traditional reservoir, which is made by
either constructing a dam on a river
or excavating the ground, a service
reservoir is a very large covered
storage tank. These tanks hold water
so it’s ready to be pumped to nearby
properties. The new tank for
South East Water in Aylesford, near
Maidstone, can store 10 million litres
of water, the equivalent of five
Olympic size swimming pools.
The customer, South East Water,
working with SCP Concrete Sealing
Technology Ltd., awarded SIG
Construction Accessories Aylesford
branch with the contract to supply
Dual Seal Waterproofing Membrane
System and 6mm Walldrain for the
construction of the roof for the
new reservoir.
New tank – storing 10 million litres of water
16

Installation of the reservoir roof began
in April 2012 and the team had to
work around the persistent April
showers, adapting to the weather
conditions so they could continue
with deliveries. The roof is laid to fall
toward the outlets to one side of the
roof, so that the installation was
carried out from the highest point of
the fall. The Dual Seal Membrane was
installed and the 6mm Walldrain was
laid on top of the Dual Seal and
rounded pebbles were positioned on
top to help with drainage.
Close liaison with SIG CA’s Mark
Ashworth and John Terry and SCP’s
Alan Pearson and the contractors
helped to progress this project. Mark
Ashworth said, “I worked closely
with Alan Pearson at SCP, advising
on product choice and ensuring the
correct products were delivered on
time. As projects go, this was fairly
straightforward to deal with, as the
site was very close to our Aylesford
branch and the stock was delivered in
very large consignments and on our
own transport.”
Alan Pearson commented, “We
received excellent support throughout
from Mark Ashworth and his team,
with the supply of the Dual Seal
Waterproofing System to this project.
Having good stocks of the Dual Seal
Waterproofing System enabled them
to react promptly to supplying the
customers’ requirements. This high
level of service, coupled with the
ability to install the Dual Seal
Membrane directly to a damp
concrete roof without a primer,
enabled the contractor to install the
roof in a very short time frame, even
in adverse weather conditions.”

Turning the Tide
on Seawall Erosion
at Newhaven
With a twice-daily battering by the
tides, the impressive Victorian
seawall at Newhaven in East
Sussex has been subjected to
enormous hydraulic power over its
100 year life. The curved sea wall
is continually hit by waves from
both the south and south east. Over
time the original concrete substrate
has suffered, with weak surface
areas being eroded and substantial
cracks being opened to further
wave and water damage.
The project’s main contractor asked
SIG Construction Accessories in
Southampton to provide their
services in sourcing products to
repair the damage and protect the
wall. The SIG CA team worked
closely with Saint-Gobain Weber to
specify Weber’s competitively
priced products for the project.
The high performance weber.cem
spray RS was used in the vital
reparation of the sea wall. This
rapid dry sprayed concrete was
specifically developed by SaintGobain Weber for repairs to
structures in tidal zones.
The biggest issue this project faced
was the time constraints dictated
by the tides. The products had to
be delivered just before low tide so
that the work could be done before
the tide came in. The application
process itself was quite hazardous
so a special scaffold arrangement
was designed and erected across
the wall face and the pump and
materials station was established
on the decking above the wall.
Lighting allowed work during
night tides.
Steve Myhill, Brand Manager at
SIG CA Southampton said,
“The contractor was more than
happy with the service from
SIG CA as we have a good
working relationship with the
company and always provide a
quick response to requests and
deliver on all our promises. The
success of the Newhaven seawall
project has led to further
opportunities in the area with this
