Drop-in Collection Highlights Tour
Join a member of the Education Department every Friday at 10:30am for a
conversational Collection Highlights tour. No reservations required. Free
with Museum Admission.

An Exhibit in Honor of the Buffalo Soldier Exhibit – the Kampmann
Library Portal at the Briscoe unveils a new exhibit with artifacts, educational
panels and a multimedia presentation commemorating the Buffalo Soldier -the African American 9th and 10th Cavalry units that played a critical role in
Westward Expansion and the military history of the US. Admission to
Library Portal is always Free.
Pony Express Love Letters
Visitors can create a handwritten letter, compose a sonnet on our vintage
typewriter, or fill in a Valentine’s Mad Lib for a special loved one. Our
modern day “Pony Express” riders (bicycle volunteers) hand-deliver the
letters on Friday, Feb 12 to all recipients in the downtown area. Letters
outside the delivery area will be mailed. Free Admission to letter writing
stations. Letter materials and delivery/postage are Free.
Hand Lettering Class with Artist Becca Borrelli. Add a mini work of art to
your Pony Express Love Letter! Join us for a class on hand lettering where
everyone creates word art inspired by their special someone. The hour-long
class is FREE and all supplies are included. All skill levels welcome but
space is limited, so come early. Free Admission.

Getting the Message (Mail Delivery in the Old West)
Beth Foulds, Education & Programs Manager at the Briscoe Museum,
discusses art, artifacts, and stories surrounding message delivery in the
West. Legendary figures drawn to delivering notes via the Pony Express
and stagecoaches included Buffalo Bill, Wyatt Earp, and even the (female)
One-Eyed Charley. Free Admission.

Typewriter Rodeo
The Briscoe Museum hosts interactive poetry with the written word
wranglers of Typewriter Rodeo. Give the writers a phrase and they
compose a custom poem (“kid-friendly or adult-feisty”) on the spot for you to
include with your Pony Express Love Letter. Free Admission.
Briscoe Book Club
Black Indians: A Hidden Heritage by William Lauren Katz
A historical account of the runaway slaves who joined America’s native
tribes and built communities that shaped the fur trade, frontier diplomacy,
and the fight for American liberty. Free Admission.

Members-Only Event Briscoe Back of the House: The TeePee
A behind the scenes look at the Museum’s 2013 Comanche TeePee,
located on our River Level and usually only accessible to staff and student
tours. The talk will be given by Beth Foulds, Briscoe Education and
Programs Manager. Refreshments will follow.
Native Film Series
Smoke Signals (1998/88 min./Rated PG-13)
Along with his nerdy neighbor, a young man from Idaho’s Coeur d’Alene
reservation journeys to Phoenix to collect the ashes of the father that
abandoned him when he was a boy. The first feature film to be written,
directed, and co-produced by American Indians.
The Native Film Series is curated by actor and artist Michael Horse. Free

Scott Williams, Archivist and Publications Manager at Artpace, details the
process of archiving museum artifacts, and how that process affects our
collective perception of the Old West. Free Admission.

Thousand Pieces of Gold by Ruthanne Lum McCunn
This fictionalized biography chronicles a young girl—sold into slavery in
Shanghai and shipped to the American West in 1871— and her fight for
survival and independence. Free Admission.

Doug “Ranger Doug” Leen and artist Brian Maebius will give a presentation
on the WPA posters designed for the National Parks.
Native Film Series
Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner (2001/172 min./ Rated R)
Based on an ancient Inuit legend and set against the backdrop of the
Canadian arctic, a tribal chief’s son plots revenge against the man who
steals the heart of the woman he was to marry, causing a rupture within the
community. Given the length of The Fast Runner, this screening will begin
at 5:30pm.

Kate Carey, Director of Education at the McNay Art Museum, discusses fact
and fabrication of Susanna Dickinson’s story and her connection to the birth
of Texas. Spared at the Battle of the Alamo by General Antonio Lopez de
Santa Anna, Susanna is known as the Lady of the Alamo.

Ansel Adams: Distance and Detail Exhibition
Ansel Adams (American, 1902–1984), photographer, environmentalist and
social activist, is recognized as one of America’s foremost photographers.
This exhibition combines the distant views for which Adams is exalted as
well as his lesser known work showing close-up and personal
interpretations of photographer's complete vision of the natural world.
