“Paws”itively News Paws Pride; Respect, Responsibility and Pride NEWS FROM TEAM 5-1 Team 5-1 continues to work hard, demonstrate Paws Pride and have fun here at MVMS. The students are very excited about enjoying the week off for Spring Break. The students are studying the question of who goes seeking adventure and why in Unit 5 Language Arts. One of the students’ favorite lessons in this unit was “The Unsinkable Wreck of the RMS Titanic”. We worked on STEM activities during this lesson. We designed tin foil boats and predicted how many marbles each boat would hold. We completed this activity with a boat building competition. In school the students have used the MacBooks to use the Reading Street programs and Google Docs to type their responses to literature. Many students have continued their learning by logging onto the Reading Street website at home. I highly recommend this program to study the weekly vocabulary words and reread the selected text. In Social Studies, we have begun our unit on colonization. Using Discovery Education we viewed a painting of the Mayflower Compact. We viewed this document to learn different aspects about the signers of the compact. To further our discussion we completed mini projects on the Mayflower passengers using Britannic School online. The students have thoroughly enjoyed our classroom discussions. In our mathematics class this month, we are practicing good test taking strategies for Smarter Balance. We are striving to do our best by showing what we know! Fractions have taken over in our classroom. We have mastered how to convert improper fractions to mixed numbers, multiply and divide fractions and how to interpret the remainder. Students have been working hard in unit seven. Fact fluency is almost completed within our classroom. Students have looked back on their open responses from the first unit. They are proud to see their growth this year. I am pleased to say this trimester is off to a great start. In science, we have been conducting many labs! Our most recent lab was the, “earthquake bridge lab.” Students were to design a bridge made out of spaghetti and marshmallows. They then had to test their bridges on an earthquake machine. To top things off we had a strong bridge competition. We competed to see which bridge could hold the most hotwheels cars. The most was 25 cars! We are now moving into a chemical and physical reaction lab. Students will be testing solutions to determine if it makes a physical or chemical change. Overall our class has done a great job with the engineering and design process. They have improved their inquiry skills and without a doubt are ready for the sixth grade science curriculum! I am saddened to see this year come to an end but as always proud of all my student’s accomplishments. NEW SCHOOL HOURS Starting Monday, May 1st, until the end of the school year, 30 minutes will be added to the school day – 15 minutes at the beginning and 15 minutes at the end.
