Vallejo is known for its waterfront and history, but what many people
may not know, it is also known as a place for filming. In June 2011,
Vallejo was used, in part, as a site for filming a major motion picture
directed by Paul Thomas Anderson.
The Master, a film that debuted in September 2012, is a drama
about a World War II veteran who struggles to adjust to the post-war
society who soon meshes with a charismatic intellectual known as
"the Master," and joins his religious movement.
The film was nominated for three 2013 Academy Awards, including
Best Actor-Joaquin Phoenix, Best Supporting Actor-Philip Seymour
Hoffman, and Best Supporting Actress-Amy Adams.

Those who have seen the movie may recognize various places in
Vallejo, as Mare Island was the host location for some of the film's
shots. The old Naval Hospital at Touro University was used,
Building 69 on the waterfront, and Quarters B, an old officer's
mansion, was used as "Helen's House" in the film.
Additionally, Franklin Delano
Roosevelt's yacht, the
Potomac, was brought up
from Alameda and parked
behind the old Art Ship to
mark the post-World War II
time. The crew filmed on the
yacht, pier and in Alden
Park.
Overall, the crew was in Vallejo for nearly a month. Both cast and
crew stayed at the Courtyard by Marriot during the filming.
New Frozen Yogurt Shop Brings
Tasty Business to Vallejo
Residents of Vallejo have another reason to celebrate this summer
as one of the newest businesses in town has proven to be truly
delightful.
Frozen Swirls, a frozen yogurt and gelato shop, has been operating
for nearly two months now with great success, as it is Vallejo's one
and only yogurt shop.
The small store, nestled in the Safeway shopping center on Admiral
Callaghan Lane, offers a variety of self-serve flavors and toppings,
with everything from fresh fruit to candy sprinkles and chocolate
sauce, allowing customers to construct endless creations of delicious
desserts.
Currently, the shop offers natural tart, chocolate, vanilla, strawberry,
peach, and other frozen yogurts, along with non-dairy pineapple and
watermelon
sorbets, with new
flavors every few
weeks. In addition
to frozen yogurt,
the shop also
offers six flavors of
gelato.
Frozen Swirls
yogurt shop is
located at 764A
Admiral Callaghan
Lane, next to the
Golden 1 Credit
Union and Liberty
Tax. The store is open Monday through Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to

Participatory Budgeting Offers
Vallejo Residents a Voice and a Vote
Vallejo's Participatory Budgeting project is coming to a rapid close.
Approved just a year ago, the Vallejo City Council allocated 30
percent of the Measure B sales tax revenue collected over a 15month period from April 1, 2012 through June 30, 2013 for the
Participatory Budgeting process. The voter-approved Measure B is a
one percent sales tax to enhance City of Vallejo services, approved
by voters November 2011.

to 9:00 p.m. and Sundays
from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Gracie's Barbecue is
located at 1801 Sonoma
Boulevard at Virginia
Street.
The process kicked off in October 2012 with Budget Assemblies.
Vallejo residents learned about the project and brainstormed citywide ideas for positive change. Afterwards, over 100 volunteer
Budget Delegates formed eight committees; six issue-based
committees; Education, Economic Development, Parks &
Recreation, Public Safety, Streets & Transportation, and Community
& Culture and two demographic-based committees; Spanish and
Youth.
The delegates had six weeks to evaluate, prioritize, and choose
which ideas to develop into proposals. Meetings with City staff,
stakeholder agencies and organizations provided information to
unanswered questions and assisted in the development phase.
Through a time and labor intensive process, 35 proposals were
created and placed on a ballot for community wide vote beginning
this weekend, Saturday, May 11. The final phase will include a
recommendation to the Vallejo City Council in June, where they will
have final consideration over the projects to be appropriated into the
Fiscal Year 2013-14 budget.
