Addition Strategies
1
Dear Family,
Your child is learning different addition strategies. In this topic, he or she
will learn addition facts for two numbers that are the same, or doubles, and
addition facts for two numbers that are 1 apart, or near doubles. Your child
will also learn that numbers can be added in any order.
Doubles and Near Doubles
Both numbers are the same.
7 + 7 is a doubles fact.
7 + 7 = 14
Adding in Any Order
4 + 6 = 10
6 + 4 = 10
The numbers being added are the
same.
The order can be changed, but the
sum will be the same.
8 is 1 more than 7.
7 + 8 is a near doubles fact.
Its sum is 1 more than 7 + 7.
7 + 8 = 15
Here are activities that you can do with your child
to practice addition strategies.
Doubles and Near Doubles
Use 20 small objects, such as buttons. Have your child use the objects to
model the doubles fact 5 + 5, and then the near doubles fact 5 + 6. Ask what
the sum is for each fact. Repeat the activity with other doubles facts.
Adding in Any Order
Use 10 small objects, such as crayons. Have your child
use the objects to model 3 + 5 and 5 + 3. Have him or
her find the sum for each fact and use the models to
tell you why the sum is the same.
