BE A Summer Science Explorer: FOUR FABULOUS WEEKS OF EXPLORATION! Egyptology: For 5th Graders Current 5th grade students will learn about the history and religious beliefs of the Ancient Egyptians as well as learn about the pyramids and why they were built. There will be an opportunity for students to simulate the use of technology that the Egyptians used in building the pyramids as well as have an opportunity to engineer and mathematically design their own pyramid/burial tomb! Students will also explore the purpose of mummification. Finally, students will explore several Egyptian myths and discuss the roles they served in Ancient Egyptian society. Biomes: For 5th Graders Current 5th grade students will study how natural resources affect the development of society and how climate change affects people over time. The major biomes of the world are: Deserts, Forests, Grasslands, Tundra and Oceans, which are influenced by a geography of a region. Students will explore the effects of the ocean currents and geography on the biomes (climatic regions) around the world and then simulate samples of each through the building of terrariums. In addition, students will analyze factors that affect the balance of earth’s biomes. Chemical Reactions: For 4th Graders An ordinary ziplock bag becomes a safe and spectacular laboratory as students mix chemicals that bubble, change color, get hot, and produce gas, heat, and odor. Chemical Reactions explores chemical change, demonstrates endothermic and exothermic reactions, and develops skills in observation, experimentation, and inference. Microscopic Exploration: For 4th Graders Salt crystals loom and brine shrimp wriggle. Who knew? Under a classroom microscope, everyday things and little-known organisms reveal their inner beauty. In the joyous spirit of discovery, this introduction to hand lenses and microscopes explores the up-close worlds of minerals, fabric, fingerprints, postage stamps, kitchen powders, pond life, and even sand focusing on fine tuning students’ observation skills. Electric Circuits: For 4th Graders This unit provides a safe, active, and engaging introduction to electricity and electric circuits. The activities spark creativity as students invent their own electrical gadgets, using inexpensive and readily available materials, such as plastic film canisters and holiday lights. The unit opens as students investigate an array of clever electrical devices, first exploring their functions, then learning how their circuits work. The contributions of famous inventors are highlighted. The unit culminates with students creating their own electrical inventions. Space Science: For 4th Graders Imagining that they are SETI scientists, students begin to analyze where, In the solar system and beyond, there may be conditions favorable for life. They investigate how our solar system and other planetary systems may have formed, and consider how what we know about the solar system fits into a bigger picture of the universe. Throughout, students consider whether life could exist "out there" and, if so, how we might communicate with those lifeforms. In doing so, students also gain valuable experience distinguishing science fact from sensationalized fiction. Brainiac Academy Be a Summer Science Explorer FREE to current 4th and 5th Grade Students!
