Commonplace and Ordinary?
I read a story about a visitor at the Old Faithful Inn in Yellowstone National
Park. I hope to go see Old Faithful some day. At the Inn, one side of the cafe is
glass and it looks out at Old Faithful. When the geyser goes off, people can
watch the spectacle from the comfort of the cafe.
On this particular day, a man was eating in the cafe when someone said,
"There she goes." Immediately everyone in the room gets up and goes to the
windows to watch the spectacular event of Old Faithful spraying the boiling water
high into the air.
As Old Faithful is still spraying, the man turns to look at people's reactions to
the wonderful sight. What he notices was the waiters, busboys and girls were filling water glasses, coffee cups and bussing tables. To them the spectacular had
become common place and ordinary. They had seen Old Faithful erupt so many
times that they did not pay any attention any more.
Some of us have heard so many sermons, attended so many classes, and
have sung the same songs over and over. We have prayed and have taken communion often. Could it be that we are guilty of allowing our worship to become
common and ordinary? Could it be that the spectacular events of the cross have
become so commonplace that we take Jesus' death for granted?
We must dedicate ourselves to the goal of pleasing our Father with sincere
and heartfelt worship.

There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because
fear has to do with punishment.
The one who fears is not made
