Preventing condensation in your home

What is condensation?
Dampness in your home is often caused by condensation. Every day
things like bathing, cooking, washing up and even breathing causes
moisture which can turn into condensation. For example
Four people sleeping for eight hours produces 1.28 litres of moisture
Six litres of moisture are produced by drying your clothes on the radiator
Washing the dishes creates just under half a litre of moisture
When the temperature in your home falls, this moisture drops from the air
and forms condensation.
Moisture can also come into your home from leaking gutters, pipes,
roofs, broken drainage, ill-fitting doors and windows, so it’s important to
report any repairs quickly.
Call the Home Support team on 01270 506200.
Signs of condensation
Water pooling on the window sills
Condensation forming on windows
Mould on walls and behind furniture
Mildew on clothes and furniture
Musty damp smells
Helpful tips to reduce condensation in your home:
Keep your bathroom or kitchen doors closed and open the windows when
you are bathing or cooking to let moisture escape outside and prevent it from
reaching other rooms.
Keep lids on pans when cooking.
Ensure air vents are open, including those in double glazed windows. Do not
block permanent vents.
Always dry clothes outside whenever possible. If you can’t, use a separate
room for drying your clothes inside. Keep the door closed and the window
open. Make sure tumble dryers which are not condensing are vented to the
outside. Do not dry washing on radiators.
Keep your heating on a low constant heat, rather than turning it on and off.
Report any leaking pipes, roofs, gutters
or constant overflows of water outside
