Hold up a book. This book weighs 1 pound . Do you think it is lighter or heavier
than the orange? After students have made their estimates, place one object on each side
of the pan balance. Which is heavier, the book or the orange?
Place the bag of paper clips, the orange, the pencils, the book, and the flour on a desk.
We are going to estimate the weight of these objects and put them in order from
lightest to heaviest. After we estimate their weight, we will use this [spring] scale to
weigh them and see how close our estimates are to the actual weights.
