2016 YEAR IN REVIEW
Green Line Velo driven by Zipcar is proud to report on our 2016 season. Another year of tremendous growth, in all
aspects of team activity, make the club a benchmark of how a cycling team should contribute to its community. We
hope you find our 2016 season recap as compelling as we do.
Racing and Results
When someone thinks of cycling, they think of winning races. Green Line Velo driven by Zipcar is a team that wins and places consistently
across disciplines and categories, year after year. These results are directly tied to the team-focused approach, where the team’s win is
more important than any individual achievement. There were also some events that punctuated the team’s development, reaching some
of the highest levels available to a team of this caliber. Highlights from 2016 include:
• Total podiums across road and cyclocross for 2016 was 79, of which 26 were victories.
• 3 overall New England Bicycle Racing Association individual titles in Elite Men, Category 3 Women and Category 3 Men. In
addition to those overall titles, 2nd place in Elite Men.
• 2nd place in New England Cyclocross Best All-Around Rider - Elite Women.
• 3rd straight year winning the Massachusetts State Criterium Championship - Elite Men.
• New England Regional Criterium Championship - Elite Men.
• 1st overall in the New England Criterium Summer team series for Elite Men, second overall for Elite Women.
• 2 riders with Elite/UCI Cyclocross ranking - Elite Women.
• 3rd overall (U25) and 9th overall in the USA Crits series.
• 19th overall on the Men’s Pro Road Tour, up against professional teams with far more budget and support.
• 4 different trips to nationals: Pro criterium and TTT Nationals, Elite Road Nationals, Canadian Cyclocross Nationals and the upcoming
USA Cyclocross Nationals.
• And finally, what may be the biggest achievement, two of our riders are turning pro this year. It is the result of hard work, both on the
riders’ part and of the team that they got results in a supportive and team-focused environment. We are sad to see John Harris and Sam
Rosenholtz go, but extremely happy for their new adventures with CCB/Velotooler. We know they will be proud to say that Green Line
Velo driven by Zipcar was the springboard that elevated them to the next level.
elite team
We undertook a special project this past season. John Harris, once a formidable opponent,
was looking for a team that could help him better on his quest to earn a pro contract. He was not
getting sound tactical advice, nor the team support on the road to get him the results he needed,
despite his endless talent. After steeping John in Green Live Velo driven by Zipcar’s ethos of teamfirst racing, he became an astute bike racer able to read race situations far better than he ever
had before. His race results blossomed into a list that anyone would be proud of, and garnered the
attention that landed him a contract with CCB/Velotooler for the 2017 season.
Sam Rosenholtz also had another breakout season, notching six major wins, retaining his MA State
Criterium Championship, and landing his (and the team’s) first-ever Pro Road Tour podium at the
Gateway Cup in St. Louis MO. Sam will be joining John in a move up to the professional ranks for 2017.
Cole Archambault had an excellent year with three wins and a number of podiums, including 2nd at the
first day of the Longsjo Classic. Mike Shinall won two races en route to his category 1 upgrade, while
Mike Heiss won the category 2 race at Mayor’s Cup. Smith, Josh, Dave and AJ all played vital roles in
helping the team secure results and cement its status at the top of New England racing.
Women’s team
Moving towards their third season, the ladies of Green Line Velo driven by Zipcar are the most active
women’s race team in New England. Following their first season, many of our women earned their
upgrades and assembled Green Line Velo’s first women’s USA Cycling Domestic Elite Team. Coming
up in 2017 the women are looking to expand their DET and attend more PRT races and National
Championships.
The women’s squad is multi-talented, diving head-first into a full cyclocross racing schedule after a long
road season. We’ll be cheering on our UCI-ranked cyclocross women who will be toeing the line at the
USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championships in Hartford, CT in January.
No matter what discipline, the women’s team sets a positive example for other women in our region. They
have shown that success, fulfillment and growth is best achieved when individual efforts are combined
to achieve a greater goal than they thought possible as individuals.
development team
Our development squad has grown every year, finding riders in the amateur categories and propelling
them to success in racing. This year the dev team graduated Gennaro and Emerson to the elites for
2017 thanks to wins at Witches Cup, Tokeneke and GMSR. Dan also earned has category 3 upgrade,
and then shot through the cyclocross rankings to begin racing at the elite/UCI level by the end of the
year.
coaching
We on Green Line Velo driven by Zipcar are fortunate to have a coach within our own ranks. Our
teammate Josh Friedman has offered more to our team than just training plans and the weekly call-in.
Josh bestows upon our team his vast knowledge that he has accrued through his international cycling
experiences and years running ATP Race Consulting, his coaching organization.
Josh is keen to show us that we are competing not only against others in the peloton, the course or the
elements, but also against our greatest opponent, self-doubt. Exercises in self-discipline, situational
awareness, mid-race communication and efficiency are at the core of Josh’s teaching principles. Any
cycling coach can write an interval plan for an athlete, but Josh’s greatest contribution to our team
is helping us become the best versions of ourselves. That achievement combined with our team-first
approach has earned us an abundance of palmares and successful community events.
training camps
Another highlight of the 2016 year was our two training camps, which provide an opportunity for our
team members to get together, get fast and bond as a group. The camps allow members to hone
skills, discuss goals and share knowledge to raise everyone’s level. It is also a chance to recharge our
competitive batteries in a relaxing and fun setting. In February, we escaped the cold winter in Boston
and headed to San Diego for a week prior to the beginning of the road season. In July, our mid-season
training camp found us closer to home in the White Mountains of New Hampshire for three days of riding
through the rain, barbecuing and camping.
Race Promotion
purgatory road race
The Purgatory Road Race in Sutton, MA is one of the most prominent road races on the east
coast and is the jewel in our crown. The race draws nearly 500 cyclists from all over the region and
serves as an unmatched opportunity for our club and our partners to reach cyclists from beyond
the Boston area. Purgatory is an all-hands-on-deck affair. One of our mandatory requirements to
be a member of our club is to contribute to the creation, management and execution of Purgatory.
While we may be also known for our community outreach at other events and support towards
advocacy initiatives, Purgatory is the best representation of our ethos. We feel that a bicycle race
created and run by, and for, bicycle racers is the best way we can bolster local racing opportunities. It
is a way to show other clubs within New England that even though we are a smaller team, it is possible
to organize a well-respected event. Giving back is important, and each year the proceeds for Purgatory
have been given back to the Town of Sutton, MA. In 2016, $1,500 was donated to the Sutton Food Pantry.
The Purgatory Road Race only grows stronger because of Green Line Velo’s commitment to running the
best race possible. Each year we make improvements to enhance the racers’ and officials’ experience
which has earned Purgatory Road Race the title of Massachusetts State Championship Road Race,
which it has held since 2012. Over its course of seven editions, the Purgatory Road Race has had four of
its men’s elite champions attain a contract with a UCI Continental team following their win at Purgatory.
Though the greatest testament to the success of Purgatory is the hundreds of cyclists that return year
after year and the USA Cycling officials that strive to work our event.
necxbar finals CYCLOCROSS RACE
While we are roadies at heart, our focus on cyclocross has gotten stronger every year. We became
involved with running the New England Cyclocross Best All-Around Rider Finals race through our friend,
USA Cycling official and Eastern Collegiate Cycling Conference Road Coordinator Alan Atwood. We
have known Alan since our undergraduate days racing in the ECCC. He approached us in 2013 asking
for help to run the New England Regional Cyclocross Championships held in Fitchburg, Massachusetts.
Since 2013, we have helped Alan co-promote the race and run several different formats and courses for
the event which is now the site of the New England Cyclocross Best All-Around Rider Finals. As a team
we have put our collective efforts together to breathe new life into the event and get regional cyclocross
racers excited about gritty, cold and windy racing in New England again. It went from a dying race to a
thriving race with attendance that approaches Purgatory-levels.
team activities
hosted clinics
While our team is focused on racing fast, we recognize that cycling is also a means of transportation and
recreation. This year, we made an effort to use the knowledge we have gained racing to help commuters
and recreational cyclists have safer, more enjoyable cycling experiences. In a city with narrow roads
and limited bike infrastructure like Boston, riding can be intimidating and downright dangerous for
beginners. Of particular concern, many children bike to school but do not receive education in bike
safety. Through our partnership with MassBike, we were able to go into classrooms to teach bike safety
skills to middle-school school students alongside MassBike representatives. The presence of racers,
fully decked-out in team kit with race bikes, encourages student engagement and intrigue. We plan to
increase our efforts next year, as the safety of all cyclists is of the utmost importance.
Cycling can be a difficult sport to start out in, as there is a high initial investment in equipment and
a steep learning curve of skills. This year, we supported riders from our sponsor Silicon Valley Bank
(SVB) and their clients as they prepared for Best Buddies Challenge-Hyannis Port, a charity ride for
developmentally-challenged individuals. In our first year of this program, we hosted weekly rides starting
from the offices of SVB in Newton, MA, catering to all levels of cyclists training for the Best Buddies ride.
This six week program gave the SVB riders a chance to ask questions about riding, increase their bike
handling skills, gain familiarity with riding in a pack and log training miles. In July, we also ran a fully
supported 50 mile ride to Wachusett Mountain for SVB employees and clients, complete with follow cars
for quick wheel changes, curated KOM segments, and our own category 1 racers to pull the peloton
along. This gave riders who had participated in the Best Buddies challenge, and others, the opportunity
to have a ride experience as if they were at a training camp for an elite team.

Weekly Social Group Rides
On Wednesday nights during the spring and summer, we bring together up to 100 cyclists (and
over 1500 unique participants each year) from the greater-Boston area to ride bicycles. The
ride is designed to appeal to a wide range of cyclists. We lead 4 different groups ranging from a
shorter, leisure ride up to a fast-paced, fitness ride. In all groups we emphasize following the rules
of the road and teach etiquette and safety for riding in a group. After the ride, we all gather at the
local pizza place, our sponsor Otto Pizza, for food and drinks. The social aspect makes the ride the
only one of its kind in the Boston area, and we feel it is crucial to growing and strengthening the local
cycling community.
While our group ride is well attended by cyclist of all abilities, there is still a large discrepancy between
the number of men and women who attend. This year, we made a specific commitment to welcoming
women to our group ride by hosting a women’s specific ride. This group ride, led by members of our
women’s team, offered a chance for women riders to interact with our women racers in a non-intimidating
environment. The event was so well-received that we had many requests to hold women’s-specific rides
more often, which we plan to do in 2017.
otto-2-otto ride
While a decent number of bike lanes exist in and around Boston, oftentimes they end up being a double
park lane for cars and do not remove the risk of being doored. To help build awareness of these issues,
this year we partnered with Otto Pizza to organize a charity ride to help support the Massachusetts
Bicycle Coalition and the Maine Bicycle Coalition in their efforts to improve bicycle infrastructure and
fund their advocacy work around safety for cyclists. We rode from our favorite Otto location in Boston
to the city where Otto was started, Portland, Maine, hence Otto to Otto. We rode 140 miles and raised
$1,600 for MassBike and the Maine Bicycle Coalition. Next year we are looking to expanding the ride to
a much wider audience which will allow for more fundraising and more fun for all.
winter riding and Maintenance Clinics
Green Line Velo hosts bicycle maintenance clinics with our sponsor shop, Landry’s Bicycles, to teach
basic maintenance skills to cyclists. This year GLV hosted a winter riding seminar, as well as taught a
spin class at Lululemon of Newbury St. These clinics are open to the public and teach essentials such
as changing a flat tire and cleaning and lubing a chain. Equipped with these skills, new cyclists enjoy a
better experience on the bike and are confident to explore new routes without fear of getting stranded.
Social Media Outreach
In addition to face-to-face interactions, we share our cycling experiences with the community through
social media platforms Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. We use these venues to invite the community
to our group rides and events, publish live updates of races, share our successes, promote our favorite
sponsor products and exude the cycling lifestyle.
We are extremely fortunate to have these mutually beneficial relationships with sponsors who share our
vision. While our sponsors are defining their brand identity and connecting with their audience, we are
growing the sport of cycling. With every positive experience and interaction, people are more likely to
associate cycling with “cool, fun, and exciting” and ultimately more likely to get out and ride or race their
bicycle. To see our latest social media outreach, please visit our sites below:

Conclusion
Over the past eight years, we have devoted much of our lives to making our team the best it can
be. Thank you all for your support this past year, 2017 is shaping up to be an even bigger year with
continued focus on racing, growing the Purgatory Road Race, and launching even more communityspecific ride events.
