The Right Respecting Schools Award

Charters
Charters are an
important way
to move the Award
forward.
1
School Rules - Traditional model
Rules for children devised by adults
Consequences for children who break the rules
Positive Behaviour/Outcomes
2
What are typical school rules?
•
•
•
•
Don’t disrupt lessons, listen to the teacher.
Don’t be aggressive to other people.
Keep school clean / put litter in bins.
Let people have their say / voice their opinions.
These school rules have clear links to children's rights and help to
ensure all students can enjoy their rights e.g. to education (28), to
achieve their potential (29), to be safe (19), to be healthy (24), to
be listened to (12).
If so, why don’t we make it clearer and easier for everyone to
understand this link?
3
What is a class charter?
Is reviewed
Regularly.
Based on an
International
agreement,
the UNCRC.
Uses the
language of
Rights and
Agreed actions.
Focuses on how
children need to
behave in
the
classroom.
Agreed by staff
and pupils
together.
Classroom
Charter
Includes the
actions that
adults and
children need to
take in order to
secure the values
and principles
of the
classroom.
Classroom
Rules
Signed by staff
and pupils and
displayed in
the
classroom.
Uses the
Language
Of
Do and
Don’t.
Principal uses
this as a
direct behaviour
management
tool.
“Children learn from witness before they
listen to teachers..if they listen to teachers
at all.”
Mahatma Gandhi
5
RRSA Model for Charters
Rights as the starting point
Mutual understanding / recognition of children’s and
adults’ Responsibilities/ Roles to ensure everyone
can enjoy those rights.
Respect
(based on actions and responsible
behaviour rather than age/status)
6
The Aim of Charters
To make the UNCRC a real and
meaningful guide to action on a day to
day level and to encourage the use of
language which refers to rights and
positive actions rather than rules.
