Tasks
ABB Inc. seeks an experienced Senior Designer will lead a
team of designers in the preparation and design of substation
project documents.The Senior Designer will support project
schedules as they relate to project deliverables. The Senior
Designer will mentor and train less experienced design and
drafting department employees. The Senior Designer will
support continuous improvement policies and procedures
within the design department focusing on quality and project
deliverables. The Senior Designer will provide design
document reviews which will focus on quality provided by the
design team, communicating results to discipline manager
and the design team. The Senior Designer will spend
40%-70% of his/her time using CAD software.
You’ll work as part of our Power Grids team, which serves
utility, industrial, and commercial customers with products and
services to help distribute electricity efficiently and reliably,
maintain power quality, and control and manage electrical
networks.
Typical duties/responsibilities for sales may include, but are
not limited to, the following:
• Generates design and detail drawings including

orthographic, plans/sections, and isometrics
• Expertise in the use of computer-aided drafting tools such as
AutoCAD or Micro Station/Bentley 3D
• Thorough knowledge to read, analyze, and interpret
engineering design codes and regulations and the ability to
apply them to the project design documents
• Thorough knowledge of the following codes with a working
knowledge of the remainder, National Electrical Safety Code
(NESC), National Electrical Code (NEC), Institute for
Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), American
National Standards Institute (ANSI), and Design Guide for
Rural Substations
• Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
• Ability to review and coordinate vendor submittals to ensure
compliance with design parameters
• Thorough knowledge of substation phase spacing and
electrical clearance requirements for live conductors, switch
components, and bus supports
• Ability to develop and review a complete set of construction
documents (layouts, elevations, details, grounding plans and
details, trench and conduit plans and details, single line
diagrams, etc.) based upon project/client specification with
little or no supervision
• Ability to create job specific electro-mechanical details and
standards
• Ability to create control enclosure layout, cable tray layout
and details, and conduit drawings
• Knowledge of substation voltages, Medium Voltage, High
Voltage, Extreme High Voltage
• Ability to review project documents and recommend value
engineering ideas
• Perform detailed calculations to compute and establish
manufacturing, construction, and installation standards and
specifications
• Inspect completed installations and observe operations, to
ensure conformance to design and equipment specifications
and compliance with operational and safety standards
• Prepare specifications for purchase of materials and
equipment
• Oversee and train project team members as necessary
• Ability to develop and design substation duct bank
• Ability to interpret engineering calculations and studies and
apply same to design requirements
• Ability to apply project schedules to complete tasks in a
timely manner and within project budget
• Thorough knowledge of substation structures and equipment
including connectors, insulators, switches, and all types of
conductors and how they interconnect
• Thorough knowledge of transmission tower and line
hardware and proper selection and application
• Ability to review and coordinate other discipline engineering
documents with electro-mechanical documents
• Ability to provide design and drawing comments to design
team and other disciplines and to properly convey intent
• Knowledge in substation construction and/or commissioning
techniques and industry standards
• Travel to job sites for job assessment and data gathering as
needed. Return to the office with sufficient field notes to
complete project design
• Interacts with other departments and suppliers to obtain
pertinent information for continuing project document
development
• Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
• Proficiency to sketch single line diagrams, layouts, general
arrangements, conduit plans, trench plans, grounding plans
and other design documents with little or no oversight
• Confer with engineers, customers, and others to discuss
existing or potential engineering projects
• Communicates with project team member’s potential project
issues and provide solutions to issues.

• Oversee project production efforts to assure projects are
completed satisfactorily, on time and within budget
• Prepare and study technical drawings and specifications of
electrical systems, to ensure that installation and operations
conform to standards and customer requirements
• Prepare drawings for electrical scope using 2D or 3D CAD
software
• Perform designs in accordance with current codes,
regulations, and scope requirements
• Interact and communicate effectively with clients, project
managers, other design disciplines, vendors, contractors, and
other team members to report project status and address
project-related issues
• Review the work of other engineers and designers and
evaluate for completeness and accuracy
•Visit client facilities and/or jobsites as needed to obtain
information for design
• Demonstrate skills with thorough knowledge of procedures,
practices, and use of the Computer Aided Drafting (CAD)
software.
• Lead the Electrical Design efforts of substation design
• Interfaces with CAD Lead to prepare complete construction
drawings
• Ability to work independently with little or no supervision
Requirements
Basic Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in engineering, engineering technology,
or design (or related field) and a minimum of five (5) years of
electrical design experience, or an associate's degree in
design, engineering, or engineering technology (or related
field) and a minimum of seven (7) years of electrical design
experience, or high school/GED and a minimum of nine (9)
years in electrical design experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Prefer 5+ years in substation design
• Proficient in computer functions required to perform 2-D
CAD, 3-D CAD
• Knowledge and ability to utilize computer-aided drafting
tools such as AutoCAD or Micro Station are required. 3D
software platforms, SolidWorks or Bentley Substation are a
plus.
• Thorough knowledge of Institute for Electrical and
Electronics Engineers(IEEE) Codes and Standards
• Knowledge of reference documents and guides
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office products
