we have recorded in a range of other important research fields. Fields
such as the sciences, including mathematical, environmental, information

Studying Law at the University of South Australia
The University of South Australia’s
School of Law has developed facilities
and a curriculum that provide students a
distinctive, practical and effective learning
experience for law.
A Dedicated Space on the City West Campus
At the University of South Australia, students
can appreciate a dedicated law environment.
The School of Law is based in a 1940s
heritage-listed building on City West campus
and houses classrooms, a courtyard, Moot
Court and Legal Advice Clinic.
Legal Advice Clinic
Every UniSA law student can be involved in
the School’s own, student-run Legal Advice
Clinic, located in the Law Building. Under the
supervision of a dedicated managing solicitor,
students meet with real clients to give legal
advice on issues such as car accidents,
consumer disputes and debt. Law students
work in pairs and the process they undertake
involves interviewing the client, researching
the case, discussing with the managing
solicitor and providing the client legal advice.
The Legal Advice Clinic also operates a dropin service at Port Adelaide Magistrates Court,
allowing students to give advice to local
members of the community, many of whom
are in the middle of legal disputes and in and
out of the courts.
Moot Court
Our Moot Court is a key learning facility that
helps students to experience what it is like
to be ‘at the bar’ before they step into the
legal profession. In this court-room like space
students attend tutorials or ‘moots’ where
they stand behind the bar, are presented with
a set of facts and must apply legal principles
to argue the strength of their case before a
judge (often the tutor or lecturer). As part
of a UniSA law degree students are given
the opportunity to moot from first year, with
four courses that involve mooting offered
throughout our degrees.
Small Class Sizes
At the School of Law, class sizes are small in
an attempt to encourage the personalised
and interactive learning experience that we
believe is crucial to legal education. Our
students often comment on the strong and
highly valuable relationships they are able to
build with teaching staff, many of whom are
practicing lawyers or working in industry.
Double your degree
Maximise your employment opportunities
by opting to complete a double degree. Law
affects almost every other aspect of society,
so we offer a range of double degrees with
disciplines such as business, environmental
science, engineering, arts and journalism to
complement your law degree. We have some
unique double degree combinations you
won’t find anywhere else in South Australia.
Student Exchange
Global Experience
All students at the University of South
Australia are encouraged to participate
in the Student Exchange program as part
of their degree. The Student Exchange
program is available to both undergraduate
and postgraduate students. Students gain
the opportunity to experience diverse
customs and cultures, build international
networks, all whilst improving their
language and intercultural communication
skills. As international skills are viewed
favourably by prospective employers, our
graduates will have broader employability
prospects and gain a competitive
advantage over other graduates.
UniSA students can gain a competitive edge
by joining the innovative Global Experience
program.
Some of our business programs offer the
‘International Student Exchange Program’
as an option that forms part of the degree;
and is widely encouraged in the University
of South Australia Business School. The
University has 80 partner universities in 25
countries including Europe, UK, Canada,
USA, South Korea and Japan. Exchange
programs are offered for as little as two
weeks or as long as one year. The University
also offers students funding in the form
of grants and scholarships to assist with
expenses. Travel grants and student
mobility grants valued at up to $7,500 are
available for eligible business students.
The graduate recruitment market is
competitive and employers are looking for
university graduates possessing experience
and an international perspective. The Global
Experience program can provide students
with the opportunity to gain valuable
experience, skills and knowledge aimed at
enhancing their UniSA degree.
Through the Global Experience program,
students can undertake an international
exchange, participate in peer mentoring
programs, volunteer both in Australia and
internationally, undertake an internship
and pursue language studies, in addition
to a host of other extra-curricular activities
providing students with a competitive
advantage as a UniSA graduate.
Students will also develop essential career
skills including networking, intercultural
communication and career management to
assist in launching their future careers.

Who will employ me?
There are a wide range of employment
opportunities available to law graduates.
A University of South Australia law degree
prepares you for legal practice but the degree
also offers an excellent foundation for many
careers. Alternative career pathways include
public service, business, academia and working
in community based legal organisations. You
could also find yourself in a legal career as a
solicitor, barrister, judge or magistrate, registrar,
policy advisor, political advisor or alternative
dispute resolution provider. There are also
opportunities in government or in business
as an in-house lawyer. A law degree develops
solid legal knowledge and advocacy skills that
can be applied to almost any profession.
Admission to practice
Program overview
The Bachelor of Laws is the first step to a
career in legal practice. Law students at
the University of South Australia learn the
fundamental legal principles of the Australian
legal system and obtain specialised knowledge
through elective courses. By the end of your
degree you will have developed the key skills
relevant for work in the legal profession.
Our law graduates are prepared for legal practice
as practical applications of learning such as
mooting, negotiating, witness examination
and student placements in legal organisations,
are embedded within the degree. To be
admitted to legal practice, it is possible for
you to commence the Graduate Diploma in
Legal Practice concurrently during your final
year of study (subject to certain conditions).
The School of Law operates a trimester study
model. The academic year is divided into
three trimesters rather than two semesters
allowing you to complete the four-year
law degree in just three years. Prospective
students may apply to start their law degree
at the beginning of any of these trimesters.
What will I study?
Throughout your law degree, you will
learn the fundamental legal principles and
concepts that underpin the Australian legal
system. Core courses such as torts, contracts,
criminal law and constitutional law will give
you a good understanding of the basic legal
principles. You will be able to expand your
knowledge in areas of interest by undertaking
electives in modern and unique fields such
as environmental law, energy law, statutory
interpretation and human rights law.
At the University of South Australia, our aim
is to make sure you have the confidence and
the skills to be a lawyer or legal professional
when you graduate. Mooting (mock trials

The University’s Bachelor of Laws degree
comprehensively covers the academic
requirements for admission to practice, as
specified by the National Law Admissions
Consultative Committee. Students seeking
admission to practice in South Australia are
required to satisfy a number of specified course
requirements within their degree, followed
by completion of an approved practical legal
training program, the Graduate Diploma in
Legal Practice (GDLP). The GDLP is offered
by The Law Society of South Australia as a
6-month or 12-month course commencing
in January and July of each year. If you are
seeking admission to practise in other Australian
jurisdictions or overseas you should apply
to the appropriate admitting authority.
Double degrees
The Bachelor of Laws can also be taken as a
double degree in the DBLD and DBLE Laws
Double Degree programs. Combine Law with
Commerce, Marketing, Human Resource
Management, Tourism and Event Management,
Psychological Science, Journalism, Arts,
Construction Management and Economics,
Civil Engineering, International Business Finance
and Trade, and International Relations.
Honours
If you have a GPA of 5.3 or above you may
be able to complete Honours in law. Honours
study develops critical analytical and research
skills that give graduates a strong advantage
in the workforce. The law Honours program is
embedded in the law degree as two courses
in the final year and includes completion of
a thesis on a law topic of your choice and
you will be supervised by a School of Law
academic. The School of Law has a high

Assumed knowledge: None
A double degree offers you a wider perspective
into the profession of law. Double degrees
may lead graduates down non-traditional or
specialised career pathways where they provide
legal advice whilst working in another field
of expertise. For example, a double degree
with marketing may give a marketing officer
extensive knowledge in the area of intellectual
property, trademarks, and commercialisation,
providing career and development opportunities
in these areas. The oral advocacy, negotiation
and research skills gained by studying law
make double degree graduates highly
employable in a great number of fields.

Program overview
Law affects almost every aspect of society
and the University of South Australia offers
a number of double degrees combining law
with such disciplines as commerce, human
resource management, international relations,
journalism, marketing, environmental science
and psychological science. The innovatively
structured double degree allows students to
graduate with two parchments in just five years.
The law degree is taught using a slightly different
study period structure to other degrees at the
University of South Australia. Law courses
are taught in three trimesters, whilst all other
courses are taught in two semesters per year. To
ensure a clash-free timetable the School of Law
recommends that you alternate between a full
year of law courses and a full year of the courses
from your other discipline. The flexibility of the
program does allow you to study both disciplines
at the same time, however we recommend
you seek advice from the Law Senior Academic
Services Officer or Program Director upon entry
into the program should you wish to do this. The
five-year double degree may be undertaken in
four years, however students should familiarise
themselves with the requirements for admission
as a legal practitioner in South Australia.
What will I study?
A Laws double degree (five years) merges
the two degrees. Students will study the core
courses from both disciplines. Laws double
degrees (five years) are made up of 40 courses
(180 units), comprising 24 courses from the
law program and 16 courses from the other
discipline program. While a single law degree
student has a number of electives, double
degree students will have fewer (as their
second degree courses replace most of their
electives). They may, however, still be able to
undertake Honours in their final year if they
meet the entry requirements and are selected.

Matthew Doran
Bachelor of Laws, Bachelor of Journalism
Matthew Doran’s decision on what to study at university became clear when the UniSA law school opened during
his final year of high school and he realised he could combine his two interests of journalism and law in a double
degree. ‘The wide variety of double degree options made UniSA an extremely attractive prospect,’ he says.
The double degree has given Matthew a very well-rounded outlook on how society operates. ‘The law degree helped
me to understand policies, procedures, how businesses and governments work, and how society is regulated, while
the journalism degree helped me to understand people more.’
Matthew enjoyed the program flexibility, practical teaching methods and enthusiasm of the teaching staff. ‘They
(staff) were so passionate and knowledgeable,’ he says.
He had been considering a career in either field but his decision became clear with the offer to take up the role of
cadet journalist at ABC News in Adelaide.

equivalent of two four-year degrees in 6.5 years.
The law degree is taught using a slightly different
study period structure to other degrees. Law
courses are taught in three trimesters, whilst
all other courses are taught in two semesters
per year. To ensure a clash-free timetable the
School of Law recommends that you alternate
between a full year of law courses and a full
year of the courses from your other discipline.
The flexibility of the program does allow you
to study both disciplines at the same time,
however we recommend you seek advice from
the Law Senior Academic Services Officer or
Program Director upon entry into the program
should you wish to do this. The 6.5-year
double degree may be undertaken in just 5.5
years, however students should familiarise
themselves with the requirements for admission
as a legal practitioner in South Australia.
What will I study?
A Laws Double Degree (6.5 years) merges the
two degrees. Students will study the core courses
from both disciplines. Laws Double Degrees
(6.5 years) are made up of 49 (construction
management) or 50 (civil engineering) courses
(225 units), mostly comprising 24 courses
from the law program and 25 (construction
management) or 26 (civil engineering) courses
from the other discipline program. Double
degree students are able to apply to undertake
Honours in their final year if they meet the
entry requirements and are selected.
10
Admission to Practice
For double degree students who wish to pursue
their career in the legal profession, admission
to practice in South Australia requires them to
satisfy a number of specified course requirements
within their degree, followed by completion of
an approved practical legal training program,
the Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice (GDLP).
Students seeking admission to practice in other
Australian jurisdictions or overseas should
apply to the appropriate admitting authority.
Honours
If you have a GPA of 5.3 or above you may
be able to complete Honours in law. Honours
study develops critical analytical and research
skills that give graduates a strong advantage
in the workforce. The law Honours program is
embedded in the law degree as two courses in the
final year and includes completion of a thesis on a
law topic of your choice and you will be supervised
by a School of Law academic. The School of Law
has a high proportion of PhD qualified staff that
will assist Honours students with their research.
