News from Humane Society Silicon Valley Winter 2008 2007 Annual Report Humane Society Silicon Valley • Winter 2008 1 The President’s Desk Dear Friends Happy Endings, New Beginnings How can you tell if a dog is confident and happy, a cat is relaxed and content, or a rabbit is calm and secure? Look at the tail. It tells a story. Humane Society Silicon Valley specializes in happy endings of all kinds – homeless dogs matched with families whose love sets tails wagging; cats or rabbits that find and give happiness nestled in new laps. These “tails” tell of animal lives lengthened through human compassion, and of human lives enriched by fun, companionship, and lessons in love and generosity only animals can teach us. Fiscal Year 2007 brought many successful adoption stories at Humane Society Silicon Valley. During the year, we found loving homes for more than 4,700 animals and reunited 400 lost pets with their families. Our Regional Rescue program saved more than 500 animals from other shelters that were in danger of being euthanized due to lack of resources or space. Our Medical Center, which specializes in affordable spaying and neutering, microchipping and vaccination services, saw more than 4,800 public patients. Our Education Department has created innovative, nationally recognized programs that do more than teach students how to understand, respect, and treat animals; they teach them how to become better citizens. The Humane Society’s history of happy endings sets the stage for a new beginning as we build our new Animal Community Center, which we broke ground on in October 2007. Our goal with this one-of-akind center is to chart a new path in animal welfare. One that will help shift our emphasis from sheltering homeless pets to cultivating a community in which humans truly understand their four-legged companions — and in which animals are respected and valued for their unique gifts. All too often, people surrender their pet because they haven’t bonded with their dog, cat or rabbit. Strengthening the human-animal bond is the driving force behind our new Animal Community Center. We want to make HSSV not only the best place to adopt a pet, but the best place to learn about, engage with, and celebrate animals. The project is on track and expected to be completed by the spring of 2009. With your continued support, we can achieve our vision: A place where people enjoy the company of animals whose tails tell of happy endings – and bold new beginnings. Our Mission Is To Save and Enhance Lives Humane Society Silicon Valley (HSSV) offers high-quality adoptions, medical care, and educational programs to enhance the human-animal bond. HSSV is an independent, nonprofit organization. We are not governed by or affiliated with the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) or the American SPCA (ASPCA) and receive no funding from these organizations. Each year, thousands of animals come through our doors where they are given a warm bed, nutritious food, veterinary care and lots of love and attention. On any given day, HSSV staff and volunteers care for as many as 400 dogs, cats, rabbits, critters, and farm animals. “I love my job because we invest time and resources to save the lives of animals that other organizations may not have the ability to help,” says Beth Ward, vice president of animal and customer care for HSSV. “We have chosen to take this more difficult path because we believe that every life here is precious.” Helping Sick and Injured Animals Hercules was brought to our shelter with severe facial injuries after being bitten by another dog. Our veterinarian removed bone chips from his head that were causing an infection. A portion of his jaw also had to be removed. Throughout his ordeal, this adorable pup showered our staff with kisses and couldn’t get enough attention. 6 HSSV’s Jennifer Wetzel examines a hospital patient. Reuniting Lost Pets “Brendin, my pomeranian, had been missing for a month and I had lost all hope of ever finding him again. When HSSV called and told me that they had Brendin at their shelter, I couldn’t believe it. I live about five hours from HSSV! Thank goodness he had a microchip which identified him as my dog. Due to my special circumstances, I was unable to drive up and get Brendin. When HSSV graciously offered to drive him to me, I couldn’t believe it. Thank you, HSSV, for giving all you give, for doing all you do, and for caring as you care. It’s hard to find words warm enough to thank you.” – Maria Trinidad Humane Society Silicon Valley • Winter 2008 “Open Paw” Class Teaches Dogs Manners and Helps Teen Choose a Career Path At Humane Society Silicon Valley, the staff and volunteers do all that they can to make the shelter not only the Best Place to Adopt a Pet, but a great place for our animals to stay. Through the Open Paw program we provide practical hands-on experience and training for shelter staff and volunteers so that they can teach our resident dogs basic manners and training to help them succeed in their new homes. “Our staff and volunteers help the animals form positive associations to all kinds of people,” says Alison “Ali” Talley, manager of behavior programs at HSSV. “While at the Humane Society, this helps the dogs to be more calm, quiet and friendly when people approach their kennel, which will help them to get adopted. Once out in the real world, it helps them to be better socialized and more confident when meeting new people.” Positive Reinforcement Training Talley says the Open Paw classes are based on positive reinforcement methods, patience and consistency. “Dogs learn by association. When I first start working with a dog I want him to associate getting something he wants (a reward) when he shows me a behavior that I want to see. It is an incredible thing to witness that magic moment when a dog understands the meaning of our requests!” Talley explains. “In Open Paw training, we do not use physical punishment,” Talley says. “Animals make associations with you and with the situation every time you interact with them. An unfortunate side effect of using punishment HSSV’s Animal Behavior Associate Michelle Suarez shows Ashley to try to train animals is that they are more how to get Yassou to sit for a treat. likely to form negative associations to you, to the situation, or to training. I worked in a private vet office for many years and wanted to work with animals that have the greatest need. Back then, the veterinarian I worked for was on the board of directors at HSSV and she gave me a tour of the shelter. I was so impressed with how well the animals were cared for and how friendly and caring the staff was. I was also glad to learn that there was no time limit on animals in the adoptions program and was excited to learn about the vision for HSSV’s new Animal Community Center. I also loved that fact that HSSV helped the animals overcome physical and behavioral problems so they could enter the shelter’s adoption program. When my boss moved out of state, I applied for a job at HSSV and never looked back. My daily work routine includes medicating, cleaning and feeding sick or injured animals in our hospital. I also treat animals in our general population that need medical care and assist our veterinarians with medical examinations and treatments. I work with a great team of people who are passionate about their work. We provide our hospital patients with a lot of intensive nursing care. This can mean administering medications and syringe feeding animals that have stopped eating on their own. We also care for animals with broken legs, upper respiratory ailments, and skin conditions. I also conduct training for our rabbit socializers. Rabbits are wonderful animals that are largely misunderstood. So many people are used to having cats and dogs as pets, but don’t know a lot about having a rabbit as a companion animal. Being prey animals, a rabbit’s behavior is different from a cat or a dog, but like these animals, they have varied personalities. Some rabbits are quiet, some are very affectionate and others are mischievous and love to play with toys. The Best Part About the Job: I really enjoy providing emergency and intensive nursing care to our shelter animals. On any given day, our team cares for dozens of sick and injured animals in HSSV’s hospital. We often see animals at their worst. They’re depressed, they’ve stopped eating, some have come to the shelter because their owners have passed away and they are grieving over the loss of their home and families. It’s my job to give them the best care possible and give them hope. Even in cases of cruelty, I’ve seen dogs wag their tails and seek out human attention. It’s amazing to me how some animals have the ability for compassion and kindness after what they’ve been through - way beyond many humans. I really believe that the animals know that we are pulling for them and that this helps them get better. When I’ve cared for an animal for several weeks and that sparkle comes back in that animal’s eye, it brings me so much joy, I can’t tell you! 8 Humane Society Silicon Valley • Winter 2008 Foster Care and Regional Rescue Programs In FY2007, HSSV’s Foster Care program saved more than 800 animals, 107 more than the previous year! “Animals that enter Foster Care are usually kittens that are not old enough to be adopted, dogs that need extra socialization, or animals that need time to recover from a medical procedure,” says Jeri Seiden, manager of HSSV’s special needs department. Seiden and her team of animal care experts also head up HSSV’s Regional Rescue program. The program saves dogs and cats that are in danger of being euthanized at other shelters due to lack of resources or space. Last year, more than 500 animals were rescued and placed in loving homes. “I’m in my 8th year of fostering baby kittens, and it is the most FUN thing I have ever done! They bring me so much joy, and it’s a wonderful feeling to know that I have made a difference in their lives.” – Luvonne Stewart, Foster Parent Luvonne Stewart, Foster Parent The Rewards of Fostering Of the seven dogs I have fostered, Molly is the one that tugs at my heart the most. When she first came to my home, she was extremely scared of people. She had been a backyard dog and didn’t know how to socialize with people, let alone be comfortable inside a house. During the two months that I fostered Molly, I worked on her fear and confidence challenges by taking her to work every day and asking people to socialize with her. I also took her to foster dog obedience classes. She had my two dogs and cat as role models and learned from them. Every day, Molly emerged a little bit from her shell. When Molly was ready to be adopted, my boyfriend thought one of his business customers, John Schaad, would be the perfect match for Molly. We arranged a visit and John fell in love with Molly’s shy sweet personality. The adoption counselor went over Molly’s background and John was committed to helping her continue down her current path of recovery and rebirth. Today, Molly goes to work with John and greets visitors but always stays close to his side. Fostering is so rewarding. I just love to help animals that need a little extra TLC and watch them bloom! — Lauren Gallagher, Foster Parent Humane Society Silicon Valley • Winter 2008 Regional Rescue Program Saves Cornelia Cornelia, a 10-year-old Maltese mix, was rescued from a nearby shelter that was going to euthanize her because of her older age and some health problems. Cornelia needed one of her eyes removed, had rotten teeth that had to be pulled and her fur was badly matted. She was also underweight. HSSV’s Regional Rescue team brought Cornelia to our shelter where she was treated by our medical team and placed up for adoption. Within days, Cornelia was adopted into a loving home. 9 The Best Place To Adopt A Pet At HSSV, we dedicate ourselves to finding the right home for all adoptable pets that come through our alwaysopen door. Our efforts to find the perfect match with each adoption are yielding impressive results: in 2007, we placed more than 4,700 animals into permanent, loving homes! “Trained Adoption Counselors help pet adopters choose the right pet to match their personal and lifestyle needs,” says Nichole Boudreau, manager of customer care for HSSV. “Our Adoption Counselors receive ongoing training from our Animal Behaviorists in specific pet behavior and how it can impact placement in the home. Their goal is to ensure that every family leaves with the pet of their dreams and that every shelter guest is adopted into a loving home,” Boudreau says. Satellite Adoption Center In order to facilitate more adoptions, HSSV opened a satellite adoption center in PETCO at the El Paseo de Saratoga Shopping Center in San Jose. The pet adoption center is managed by HSSV and features six to ten shelter cats that are available for viewing during store hours seven days a week. Last year, we found loving homes for more than 4,700 animals,” – Nichole Boudreau, Manager of Customer Care for HSSV “The PETCO satellite adoption center has enabled our staff and volunteers to show people who might not visit our shelter the fabulous animals we have and talk with them about our programs and services,” Boudreau explains. Boudreau says HSSV plans to expand the PETCO partnership to include dog and small animal adoptions. Community Adoptions In fiscal year 2007, we expanded our weekly offsite adoption fairs to include adoption events at corporations and at locations beyond Santa Clara County. In addition to finding more homes for pets, these offsite venues help to increase our visibility within the community, educate the public about our services, and spread the word that 10 HSSV shelter guest Rosie and Volunteer Dog Socializer Kelley Ketchmark at an offsite adoption event. Humane Society Silicon Valley is the best place to adopt a pet. Golden Pet Program Increasingly, older pets are being relinquished to HSSV. “We often get 10-year-old cats and 8-year-old dogs surrendered,” Boudreau explains. In order to help find these mature pets loving homes, HSSV created a Golden Pet program to counsel potential adopters about the many benefits of adopting a senior pet. The program offers discounts in HSSV’s pet store and medical center to those who adopt older pets. Senior citizens receive a 50 percent discount on the adoption fee if they adopt a Golden Pet as well. “One of the great things about adopting a mature pet is what you see is what you get.” Boudreau says older pets have stable, developed personalities, are generally less destructive than puppies or kittens, don’t require constant attention and have fewer housetraining issues. “We think golden pets are the best-kept secret at HSSV!” Humane Society Silicon Valley • Winter 2008 Happy Endings “Momo and Dewey” have brought us numerous happy memories and impacted our lives in so many ways. We love to watch Dewey jump in the air and do a small twist when we call him a “handsome boy”. We’re grateful to Momo for thumping in the middle of the night one time to alert us to a small earthquake. It’s difficult to describe how your pets impact your life. Life has just been better with our “boys”. – Brian Olson and Belinda Ho “Izzy” ➤ I went to HSSV to adopt a kitten, but when I saw Izzy, I fell in love with her. HSSV had to amputate one of Izzy’s legs, and I wasn’t sure what challenges would arise caring for a threelegged cat. I’m so glad that I decided to take Izzy home. She is a sweet, spunky and beautiful cat who has brought joy to my life! – Elizabeth Towner “Marley” is a wonderful companion and the true definition of loyalty to a family. One night while we were sleeping, Marley heard a noise and alerted us. It turns out there was a burglar in the yard. We called the police and the burglar was apprehended. The moral of the story is: Adopt from HSSV; they have great pets! – Victor Valencia Humane Society Silicon Valley • Winter 2008 11 Spay/Neuter Programs Save Lives Our Medical Center offers affordable, high-quality medical services that include spaying/neutering, vaccinations, microchipping, de-worming and testing. HSSV is the only Humane Society in the South Bay to HSSV’s Medical Center offer all of these medical services to spayed/neutered the public and their 4,245 animals, pets. During the month of February, HSSV offers 50 percent discounts on all spay/neuter surgeries. “We want to encourage people who have been putting off altering their pet to take action,” says Angeline Siegel, HSSV’s business director for medical, training and nutrition. “Spaying and neutering animals is the fastest way to help end pet overpopulation and save taxpayers money at the same time,” Siegel notes that a big part of her staff’s job is to educate pet owners so that they understand that spaying/neutering actually helps pets live longer, healthier lives, greatly reduces HSSV’s Ben Munoz and Karen Girven vaccinate a clinic guest. the incidence of certain cancers and makes pets less likely to roam, spray or get into fights. Spay/Neuter Programs for Homeless Cats Nearly two-thirds of the animals that come in to our shelter are cats, and cats are euthanized at a far greater great than dogs. This is primarily because many are feral or unweaned kittens that could not be placed in homes. There are an estimated 125,000 homeless cats roaming Santa Clara County. HSSV has partnered with the county, cities, local businesses, other shelters and rescue groups to make inroads into the cat overpopulation problem through TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return). Last year, HSSV’s Medical Center sterilized nearly 1,000 homeless cats, preventing the potential births of thousands of kittens. “TNR, when accompanied by ongoing homeless cat management, is the most effective, humane method of reducing homeless cat populations,” says Angeline Siegel. Siegel says cats are trapped, taken to shelters or veterinary clinics where they are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, tested and have their ears tipped so they can be identified as part of a managed One Caregiver’s Story What started out as a shortterm goal to help one or two cats at my office has evolved into a lifelong commitment to help as many homeless cats as I possibly can. I have always reached out to help those animals that have little support - those that are ignored or misunderstood. Only healthy cats are placed back in their colony so there is not a health risk to other cats and animals. Sterilization helps make cats better community citizens and the colonies gradually diminish in size. HSSV’s award-winning documentary on homeless cats in Santa Clara County has aired on several local television stations and is available on DVD. The 30-minute film “Cats Without a Home” powerfully weaves the plight of homeless cats, and shows how HSSV and groups are working to manage and reduce the homeless cat population through TNR. A movie trailer of the film can be accessed at: http:// www.catswithoutahome.com. “The goal of this documentary is to raise public awareness about homeless cats and inspire people to care,” Siegel says. In FY 2007, HSSV’s Medical Center altered nearly 1,000 homeless cats. Humane Society Silicon Valley • Winter 2008 Behavior, Training and Nutrition Our Behavior, Training and Nutrition program got off to an exciting year by partnering with A Dog’s Life in Sunnyvale to offer dog training classes to adopters and the general public. It’s been reported that a majority of the animals are surrendered to shelters due to behavior issues - many of which are very treatable and preventable. Our staff behaviorist and counseling volunteers help frustrated pet owners deal more effectively with their animals’ behavior problems before they become frustrated and relinquish a pet. “Last year, our behavior team fielded more than 1,680 calls and emails concerning a variety of issues such as aggression, house-soiling, separation anxiety, and adjustment disorders,” says Angeline Siegel, HSSV’s business director for medical, training and nutrition. “This advice line is critical in preventing animal relinquishment, as many behaviors can be prevented or treated,” Siegel explains. Additionally, Siegel says there is an abundance of information that can be downloaded on HSSV’s website to help pet owners with everything from litterbox training to cat and dog introductions. Siegel uses a holistic approach when counseling the public experiencing problems with their animal companions. “By looking at an animal’s behavior issue differently, many people can better understand how their actions may impact the problem, and can make needed changes accordingly.” Siegel says one such example would be in how she and her staff counsel people whose cat has urination problems. “‘Holistic’ means that I’m taking into consideration multiple aspects that could be causing this problem, such as medical, nutritional, family social dynamics, psychological development, and the cat’s personality. By doing so I get a deeper understanding of how all of these aspects influence the urination problem and can better get to the underlying core issue. This enables my team to tailor our assistance to the individual and home environment, which gives us a greater chance of success.” HSSV Pet Store Have you visited the HSSV Pet Store lately? Allen oversees ten education programs, a majority of which are listed here. Compassion in Action (CIA) is a service learning program where middle and high school students explore animal welfare topics, work on exciting service projects for HSSV or their community, and meet special animal guests. This robust program has received critical acclaim from the National & Community Service Resource Center as an “effective practice.” Allen has been asked to speak for HSSV at the National Service Learning Institute in San Jose in 2008 about building strong community service learning partnerships. Caring Communities is an eightweek school enrichment program that teaches third-graders lifelong skills such as responsibility, compassion, and citizenship. This standards-based program created by credentialed teachers has received high praise from teachers whose students have completed the program. As one Hayes Elementary teacher described, “The course goes beyond teaching students youth-centric programs at HSSV. It also gives teens the opportunity to develop their leadership skills and form a basis for life-long animal interest and philanthropy. Last year, students wrote and acted in three short videos to help educate other kids about HSSV’s key programs and services including adoptions, our behavior helpline and spaying/neutering. Animal Pals Club allows 10–15 yearolds the opportunity to interact with a wide variety of animals. Once a month, students meet animal-care experts, tour our shelter, and complete a project to help the animals in our care. Bite-Free is an innovative, hands-on educational program for K-6 classrooms. Through discussion, a short video, and a book, students learn to determine an animal’s mood by its body language, distance, and vocalizations, and will learn strategies for staying safe. Girl Scout Programs are geared toward troops interested in the welfare of animals in our community. Scouts can complete their Bronze or Silver Award service project with HSSV. The program includes an educational workshop, hands-on activities, access to professionals from animal-related fields, and guided opportunities to help girls make a difference in their community. HSSV’s Corporate Volunteer Program provides Silicon Valley employees with a teambuilding experience that makes a difference in the lives of homeless animals. During a corporate volunteer day, employees receive a shelter tour, participate in an animal experience with our shelter guests, and roll up their sleeves to complete a group project alongside HSSV staff. Past projects have included exterior painting of the shelter, spring gardening on the HSSV campus, and a summer car wash for HSSV animal transport vehicles. Last year, approximately 480 active volunteers donated more than 21,000 hours of time valued at $404,000. “Our volunteers are an integral part of our workforce and we could not operate without them,” Gunderson notes. “It’s a privilege to volunteer and spend time with the animals. We go to work to make a living; we volunteer at HSSV to make a difference,” – Volunteers, Elizabeth Laverty and Kevin Williamson Volunteer Cat Socializer Dana Linder cuddles shelter guest Punkin. Volunteer Jobs: Dog Socializer and Mentor, Writer, My other main volunteer job is serving as co-chair of The Fur Ball 2008. I work closely with Robert Armbrust, the HSSV Event Manager, and Rita Bonasera, my co-chair, on every aspect of the event, from logistics to venue to marketing and collateral. The Fur Ball is HSSV’s biggest fundraising event of the year, and it’s a hugely complicated event to execute! We work with a committee of 20 (and counting) exceptionally talented volunteers who serve on various sub-committees focused on everything from bringing in auction items to signing up wineries and restaurants. The Fur Ball is the only gala in town where guests can bring their animal companions — and we have some big surprises in store this year! The Fur Ball 2008 Co-Chair How long with HSSV: Since April 2006 Volunteer hours: Varies from 6 to 20+ per week Companion Animals: Two dogs & four cats — Sherwood, an eight-year-old Keeshond adopted from breed rescue; Jammer, a five-year-old American Eskimo mix adopted from a shelter; Tazo & Dromio, eight-year-old Ragdolls; and Pyewacket & Crunch, former ferals who have morphed into lap cats. Why Volunteer at HSSV? HSSV is an incredibly vibrant, life-affirming place. The extraordinary care and compassion that the organization provides to homeless animals is matched by some truly visionary thinking — and that’s what really drew me to HSSV in the first place. Not only is HSSV focused on the sheltering part — and they do that superbly well — but they are also working on all the “upstream” issues like education, spay-neuter, trapneuter-return for feral cats, and changing public perceptions. Without these innovative initiatives, the endless stream of homeless animals and unnecessary euthanasia will never stop. I’m especially excited about the new Animal Community Center — it’s a revolutionary new approach to sheltering that will serve as a model for shelters nationwide. Best thing about the job: Extraordinary things happen every day at HSSV, and there is always something to celebrate: an animal who’s been at the shelter for months finally finds the perfect home; a once-neglected animal experiences love for maybe the first time; a lost pet is joyously reunited with his family; a group of schoolchildren learn about the importance of kindness and respect for all living creatures; the medical staff saves an ill or injured animal; a dog’s once-problematic behavior is transformed after intensive effort by volunteers and staff. It’s an incredible feeling to be part of so many miracles and second chances! What the volunteer jobs entail: Working as a dog socializer can sometimes be physically and emotionally taxing, but it’s exhilarating and fascinating at the same time. Socializers work with all the adoptable dogs to help make their time at the shelter less stressful by providing affection, mental stimulation, exercise, training, and behavior modification. We all go through extensive training focused on dog behavior so that we can better address the particular needs of each dog. Some dogs simply want a vigorous walk or game of fetch; others crave lap time. However, some dogs have complex issues that need ongoing work, such as fear or shyness, aggression towards other dogs, poor doggie manners, etc. We have an amazing partnership between staff and volunteers focused on making these dogs more adoptable. Of course, not every dog has issues! Many dogs are simply in the shelter through no fault of their own, and just need that second chance at a loving home. At HSSV I’ve met so many wonderful dogs with incredibly resilient spirits. It’s especially gratifying when a diamond-inthe-rough dog that you’ve worked with for months finally finds that wonderful adopter who is willing to open their heart and home. One thing that’s been truly eye-opening since I started volunteering: I’ve gained a whole new appreciation for pit bulls. I confess that I initially held some common misconceptions about the breed. The pit bulls at HSSV are truly exceptional — and among the most Humane Society Silicon Valley • Winter 2008 17 Donor News HSSV’s Pet Guardianship Program Secures Your Pet’s Future Bridget Keenan, Director of Gift Planning, with Fiona On New Year’s Day, I was driving down 101 and a car came in from the entrance, quickly drifted across one lane and into mine, and narrowly missed hitting me at high speed. Frantic thoughts went through my head, but thankfully one question I didn’t have to ask is “Who would take care of my cats?” Planning for the future of a precious pet’s next home, if necessary, is not only reserved for the elderly, or those who are planning risky surgery. It should also be something that every responsible pet owner considers. If you don’t have a family member, neighbor, or friend who agrees today to care for your pet in case of emergency or death, HSSV’s Pet Guardianship Program is here for you. By enrolling your pet(s) in our Pet Join Our 2008 Best Friends Circle Like most donors, you likely get satisfaction in knowing that your donations are helping HSSV continue to find loving homes for our shelter animal guests. But if you are the kind of person who wants to know that your donation is directly helping a dog, cat, or rabbit in our shelter, consider joining our 2008 Best Friends Circle. Faye Underwood, manager of individual giving for HSSV, says the Best Friends Circle gives donors a choice in how to help our shelter animals: either by sponsoring an animal available for adoption, or an entire kennel that houses several animals at different times throughout the year. Best Friends Circle sponsorships provide the critical care necessary to ensure a successful adoption for all of our special shelter guests: nutritious food, spaying/ neutering (if necessary), vaccinations, training, socialization, medical treatment and more. You can choose to sponsor a dog, cat or rabbit, and sponsorships start at $100 per animal. Best Friends Circle members who sponsor a kennel for a year get the added benefit of having their name posted prominently on the front of the kennel, displaying their support. An annual kennel sponsorship gift of $500 will help create a safe, comfortable place where, over the year, 18 as many as 35 animals will benefit from special care and attention as our staff actively works to find them loving new homes. Our kennel sponsors have the satisfaction of knowing their donation will help dozens of animals. We send each Best Friends Circle member a photo and information about Guardianship Program, you save your loved ones from dealing with what can be a painful pet surrender process. With our Pet Profile form, YOU tell us in advance about your pet, his veterinarian, medical needs, personality and behavior, likes and dislikes, typical home life, etc. We have the information on record, so your designated friend or family member isn’t left guessing about your pet’s past when they bring him to our shelter. All we ask is that you make an annual donation of any amount to HSSV, and include us in your will. In return, we will do everything in our power to ensure your beloved pet finds the perfect new home. I would love to know more about your pet(s) and help you plan for their future. For more information on our Pet Guardianship Program, or for answers to any questions, please call me at 408-727-3383 ext. 835. Or visit our website at: www.hssv.org/ donate_guardianship.html. a pet that is benefiting from their generosity. “We’ve found this popular program to be extremely satisfying for those who specifically like to know how their donation is helping the animals at HSSV,” Underwood says. For more information about the 2008 Best Friends Circle, call Faye Underwood at (408) 727-3383 extension 873, or email her at: [email protected]. Humane Society Silicon Valley • Winter 2008 HSSV Gets New Board and Honorary Board Members Two Paws Up Two Paws Up to 25 eBay volunteers who brightened our shelter by stringing numerous holiday lights. Their hard work made our building more friendly and inviting during the dark evening hours. The eBay Foundation also donated $2,000 to HSSV, on top of their volunteers’ time! A HUGE “thank you” to Santana Row for its support this past holiday season! HSSV raised $6,200 while sponsoring Carriage Rides and “Santa Paws” photos of Santa with pets at the pet-friendly shopping center. Shellie Fry and her adopted dog Maynard The HSSV Board of Directors has appointed Shellie McLean Fry to its Board and named Tara VanDerveer to the HSSV Honorary Board. Fry is an HSSV volunteer and community philanthropist, and VanDeVeer is head coach for the Stanford women’s basketball team. Fry has been an active cat socializer at HSSV’s satellite adoption center in PETCO in Saratoga. She has also helped organize, promote and raise funds for The Fur Ball, HSSV’s black tie fundraiser. Shellie’s husband, Dave Fry, CIO and co-founder of Fry’s Electronics, says Shellie’s board appointment is a great fit for his wife. “Shellie is so passionate about animals and really embraces HSSV’s mission to save and enhance lives.” VanDerveer, who has 27 years of collegiate coaching experience, is one of the most well-respected and dynamic women’s basketball coaches in the country. VanDerveer became internationally known in 1996 when she guided the United States Olympic Women’s Basketball Team to the gold medal in Atlanta. “The talent and diverse expertise of our board of directors and honorary board has always been one of HSSV’s key assets, and we are thrilled to have Shellie and Tara join our experienced team,” says Christine Benninger,” HSSV president. Humane Society Silicon Valley • Winter 2008 A special thanks to PARC (Palo Alto Research Center), for holding a donation drive and fundraiser for HSSV. PARC collected lots of pet beds, toys, and food, and presented HSSV with a check for $1,800! Special recognition goes to eighth-graders Ellen and Amy who held a blanket, toy and food drive for our shelter animals. Ellen was inspired to hold her Holiday drive after watching a special on the Animal Planet television network. Ellen approached her principal at Fisher Middle School about holding a pet supply drive for our shelter. Once she received the OK, she and her friend Amy posted banners and fliers around campus and set out boxes in key areas to collect pet products. Ellen also talked about the Dec. 3-21 drive during the morning announcements at the school. Two Paws Up to orthodontist Dr. Stephen Yao for hosting a very creative and successful donation drive that benefited numerous children as well as animals. Dr. Yao initiated a “Halloween Candy Buy-Back” at his orthodontia office. He purchased 412 pounds of Halloween candy from children at $1/lb., and then doubled what he paid to the children and donated $824 to HSSV! On top of that, Dr. Yao sent all non-chocolate candy to our troops in Iraq (chocolate would melt in the heat), and chocolate candy to charities in the U.S. Way to go, Dr. Yao! Two Paws Up to Louise Robinson, one of our devoted foster parents who is also the President of the American Sewing Guild for organizing a sewing drive to create beds for our shelter cats. Louise and 20 members of her Guild sewed and stuffed more than 100 cozy and colorful beds to cover the plastic perches in our kitty condos. Pictured left to right: Louise Robinson, Denise Verbrugge, and HSSV’s Breanna Petersen, with shelter guest Misha 19 Donors It is our honor to share this list of special friends who made life-saving gifts to Humane Society Silicon Valley in 2007. Because every gift is crucial to this work, we wish we could include all gifts in this report. However, due to space, we decided to publish this edited list of supporters whose donations over the year total $100 or more in 2007 (we have not included gifts toward previously vowed pledges, gifts totaling less than $100, “in kind” gifts or gifts to our New Beginnings campaign for our new facility). To each of you who made a difference in the life of a companion animal this year, we thank you.
