Some of you will remember
the Pompeys Pillar Preservation Committee. Some will
remember the Pompeys
Pillar Historical Association
and some of you only know
us at the Friends of Pompeys Pillar. All three names
are part of the same organization, reflecting different
goals and focus, over the
course of 25 years working
on behalf of Pompeys Pillar.
During 2014 we will be
celebrating the work of the
dedicated volunteers to
present Pompeys Pillar for
future generations.
Highlights of the past 25
years. In late 1988 a dedicated group of volunteers
formed the Pompeys Pillar
Preservation Committee.
Their challenging but simple
goal was to ensure that
Pompeys Pillar and its historical significance as the
site where Captain Clark,
Sagagawea, Baby Pomp,
York and others had visited
and where Captain Clark
etched his name on the rock
on July 25, 1806 would remain accessible to the public.
When the Don and Stella
Foote family found it could
no longer afford the liability
associated with making the
Rock accessible to the public,
they decided to put Pompeys
Pillar up for sale. The Preservation Committee stepped
forward to help find a solution. The grassroots group
got organized. They changed
their name to the Pompeys
Pillar Historical Association
and achieved their initial goal
in 1991, when the Bureau of
Land Management assumed
ownership of the property.
Shortly thereafter, the Association began work on its
second goal: National Monument status for Pompeys
Pillar, which had been designated a National Landmark
in 1965. After years of working with the U.S. Department
of the Interior and through
the support of the Montana
Congressional Delegation,
President Clinton rewarded
the Association’s efforts by
designating the Pillar a National Monument in January
2001.
In 2006, The Pompeys Pillar
Historical Association, working in partnership with the
BLM and other private and
public entities raised the funding to build an Interpretive
Center. The Interpretive Center opening coincided with the
Bi-Centennial of the Lewis
and Clark Expedition. 2006
was chosen as the BiCentennial date at Pompeys
Pillar to commemorate the
visit of Captain William
Clark’s visit to Pompeys Pillar
on July 25, 1806.
In July 2006 Yellowstone
County and Pompeys Pillar
National Monument hosted
the multiday Bicentennial
Signature Event Clark on the

supporting the national monument.
The main roles that the organization plays today, in partnership with the BLM, are recruiting and coordinating volunteers, raising funding for projects and providing educational
and promotional support for
Pompeys Pillar National Monument. In addition, the
Friends of Pompeys Pillar
assists and cooperates with the
Bureau of Land Management
in the development, planning,
construction and maintenance
of the site at the Pompeys
Pillar National Monument.
We invite you to join us on
March 19th at the Friends of
Pompeys Pillar office from 3 –
6 P.M.
In 2013, the Pompeys Pillar
Historical Association became
the Friends of Pompeys Pillar.
The name was changed to
better reflect the role that the
organization currently plays in
Did You Know?
Did you know that Pompeys Pillar was supposed
to be a Monument Park? In 1956, renovations
were made to build an 1890’s-looking town on
U.S. Highway 10 as the entrance to the pillar. The
“Old Town” would have included a Country
Store, music room, and a Livery Stable.

LIKES!!
A Word From Jeff, Pompeys Pillar National Monument Manager
different the site looks
with each passing season. As the saying goes,
“A picture is worth a
thousand words”. Therefore, I wanted to take my
corner this month to
share with you the
changing seasons at the
Pillar over the last several years. Enjoy.
As I wandered the Pillar
yesterday, the temperature
hovering at -30o Fahrenheit, I was amazed at how
beautiful the site looked in
the snow. Animal tracks
crisscrossed the grounds,
tree branches were frosted
in ice, and steam rose from
the Yellowstone. It made
me think how remarkably
