What is Tissue?
●
●
Cells in the human body are organized into groups and layers called
tissue.
All tissue is composed of similar cells that are specialized to carry out a
specific function.
Different Types of Tissue
Four major types of tissue are:
Epithelial
Connective
Muscle
Nervous
Epithelial Tissues
● Form protective coverings (covering body surfaces,
lines/covers internal organs, & composes glands)
● Function in protection, secretion, absorption, excretion
● Lacks blood cells, readily divide; cells are tightly packed.
Connective Tissues
● Support soft body parts and binds structures together
● Distributed throughout the body
● Has good blood supply and cells are farther apart than
epithelial cells
Muscle Tissue
●
●
●
●
Produces body movements
Attached to bones, in the walls of hollow internal organs, and the
heart.
-Hollow organs are the stomach, intestines, gallbladder, urinary
bladder & uterus of a female
Able to contract in response to specific stimuli
Nervous Tissue
●
●
●
Conducts impulses that helps controls and coordinate body activities
Located in the brain, the spinal cord, and the nerves
Allows for cells to communicate with each other and with other body parts
