PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE: Ann Carroll (410-224-2753) [email protected]
In a couple of weeks, a bright lime green Membership Directory will land in each of our mailboxes. Needless to say
(though it’s clearly referenced in the title), it’s very easy to overlook the first few pages that contain our Bylaws and
Standing Rules. But they’re worth reading. The Standing Rules are particularly important, and you’ll note that this is
where we as members have made a few changes over the years to promote transparency in our club.
The most recent change was first circulated in the December 2014 newsletter, and voted on by the general membership
at our December meeting. As originally written, Standing Rule #5 read: “A resident who does not meet the criterion of
joining the New Annapolitans within the first two years of moving to the Greater Annapolis area may submit a letter to
the Executive Board requesting admittance.” In December, we clarified this Rule with another line: “Consideration
will be given to applicants who are not new residents but have recently experienced a significant life-changing
personal circumstance.”
There’s been some confusion about this addition, and so I’d like to call your attention to how little this rule has actually
changed – as we need your help in making this clear to others. New Annapolitans was founded to help newcomers
adjust to living in Annapolis, and that remains the essence of the club. But over the years, several Executive Boards
have felt that more guidance in Standing Rule #5 would be helpful and would foster more consistent decisions.
So what is a “significant life-changing personal circumstance?” All of us can probably answer this question, as these
are the life events we fear most. The recent loss of a spouse or partner, through death or a sudden divorce. The death of
a parent who required years of care. Retirement from a career that left little time for building friendships. Turning
points like these often demand construction of a new life, just as the moves we made challenged us to begin anew.
Please, when your new Directory arrives, take a look at those first few pages and help us by being an informed
member of this wonderful Club!
Ann Carrol
It is not too late to renew your membership if you have
let it lapse. But please act quickly!
Board Information
Please use a RENEWAL form not a ‘New Member
form.’ The dues (including fees) for renewing now are
$50 in October, $55 in November, and $60 in
December. After December 31, renewals are not
accepted and members are not eligible to rejoin after
December 31 of the year their membership lapses.

All newcomers (new members are newcomers for a year
after joining) are invited to alternating coffees at 10 am
or Teas at 1 pm on the third Thursday of each month
except August. The Newcomers Tea (1-3 pm) on
October 15th will be hosted by Pat Casey and Kathy
Clatanoff at Acton’s Landing in downtown Annapolis.
Please join us to meet other newcomers and learn about
events in and around Annapolis. Watch for an email
from your Big Sister, and mark your calendars for these
fun get-togethers.
Keep an eye out for your new Directory, which will be
mailed in October! And be sure to encourage
prospective members to visit the New Annapolitans'
website at www.annapolitans.org where links are

2nd VICE PRESIDENT-PROGRAMS
Thanks again to all chairs and co-chairs for
demonstrating such creativity and enthusiasm at our
September general meeting!
Matty Matzen (410-280-1447) [email protected]
Bicycles were were popular with women by 1895 and
provided new options for mobility and personal
freedom. This freedom will be dramatized at the
General Meeting by the Annapolis-based “Bike Like a
Girl” team, the second eight-woman team to enter the
Race across America (RAAM), from Oceanside, CA, on
June 20th to Annapolis on June 26th. The team, with six
local riders, finished the race in six days, 12 hours and
58 minutes, with an average of 19.14 mph. One of their
goals is to raise money to support girls and women
through cycling, including donating bicycles to women
in Afghanistan. The local members of the team will tell
their story (with a short video) at the meeting.
If you missed that meeting, you may sign up for an
Interest Group (IG) at any time by contacting the
group’s chair. You also may visit a group before signing
up on their email list. To do so, just send your RSVP to
the chair and hostess. See the details of each IG for
information on whether experience in their particular
activity is required.
We're excited to offer a new Interest Group, Cooking
Class Showcase, chaired by Lesley Younes. Read about
this new group in the newsletter, listed alphabetically
under “More Groups.”
The lunch after the program will be at Les Folies on
Riva Rd., Annapolis. The lunch is $25 (which includes
tax and gratuity) paid in cash when you sign up in the
church lobby before the General Meeting. If you are
either late or can’t attend the meeting but would like to
join us, contact me.

NA RESOURCES
Terry Martini (443-221-7260) [email protected]
Whether you’ve just moved to this area or have lived
here for years, we all need help finding reliable people
for projects in our everyday lives. If it’s simply someone
to cut your hair, a good yard service or a doctor
specialist, talking to a friend with a good experience
with that group will always be the best bet to find
someone. With over 50 New Annapolitans members
who have offered to consider your request, you will find
exactly who or what you need. You will not get
advertisements or multiple e-mails, only a suggestion
from another member of our group.

Beginners bridge is a group of “rusty” bridge players
who want to play bridge again but need both some
instruction and a group in which to play and learn. We
play every Monday at the Park Place party room from
1:30 to 3:30. We often put our hands down after the
game and see how we might have bid or played
differently. We are very low key--lots of laughs and no
one gets upset at anyone. We usually have 2 tables
and sometimes 3 if everyone is in town. An email is
sent out on Wednesday and you must respond by
Saturday if you want to play on the upcoming Monday.
We accommodate extras so no one is left out. We play each Thursday morning at the Bay Hills Golf
Course in Arnold, Md. Women who have played golf,
regardless of skill level, are invited to join us. No
handicap is required. We have room for as many as 12
players and are happy to expand. Members will be
notified of tee times by email with Reply All. Please
email whether or not you will be playing.

We are a group of intermediate golfers who enjoy
getting together weekly on Thursday mornings for nine
holes of non-competitive golf, frequently at Blue Heron,
Walden in Crofton, and Heritage Harbor. We play from
April through October. We email information weekly to
our members.
On Tuesday, October 6th, we will have lunch and play
bridge at the Greenbury Point Golf Club. Lunch
(optional) will begin at 12 noon. Bridge begins at 1 pm.
We will send an invitation to those on our Evite contact
list; others may respond by email or phone. If you email
or leave a voicemail message, do not assume you are in
until you get a response from us. Tables will be filled on
a first-come basis. Carpools are recommended. If you

We are a group of couples – husband/wife/significant
other — or if you are single, just grab a partner and
come along. We usually meet for dinner during the third
week of the month. We aim for Wednesday nights and
occasionally a Sunday brunch. We try various locations,
dress styles and price points. We meet for a social/
cocktail hour followed by a fun-filled dinner in a group
setting. Each couple orders from the menu and pays for
their dinners on a separate check.
Sally Ehrle will be hosting a Halloween event. Details
will be sent by email.
Some After Hours (AH) members (who have already
purchased their tickets) will see “Carousel” at
Maryland Hall October 10th. Buy your own ticket and join us!
Tuesday Movie Night is hosted by Helen Poli. She will
select a movie and email group members with details.
Anyone can pick a movie—just contact Sandy with
your idea.
We require a one-time deposit check of $30 per couple
payable to New Annapolitans to assure your place in the
group. This check will be returned to you at the end of
the year. Each month you will receive an email well in
advance stating the venue, the date and time, and how to
make your reservation. Note: Reservations are required.
Come join neighbors and your New Annapolitan friends
at the Couples Dining Around monthly event. Happy Hours at various restaurants, walks on the
week-ends, and special events are all open for anyone
to host. Contact Sandy to reach all the members with
your planned event.

Lesley has volunteered to start this cooking group for
those with cooking expertise they would like to share.
Email her with your special cooking style, especially

(students?) who want to stay after to help clean up.
Classes will be limited to about 10 ladies, and we’ll
meet monthly for about 3 hours, 11 am to 2 pm. Costs
will vary according to the menu, but it will be based on
the cost of the ingredients divided by the number in the

MUSIC LOVERS’ CIRCLE (No regular monthly meetings)
Wednesday Walkers take morning walks in local
neighborhoods only. They alternate their walks between
the USNA, Eastport, and Murray Hill/Downtown
Annapolis. Pat Casey is the contact person for
Wednesday Walkers.
If it rains on a Tuesday, we walk in the Westfield
Annapolis Shopping Mall at 9 am. We meet at the sofas
in front of the interior Nordstrom entrance.
Linda Russell (845-558-2969) [email protected]
We are a group of music lovers who enjoy sharing a
variety of musical experiences (classical, jazz, opera,
international and popular). We share information on
musical happenings in the Annapolis, D.C. and
Baltimore areas. Members can decide to meet for an
activity, if interested. We also schedule occasional
events that may include a tour, musical performance and
dining out. An appreciation of music is the only
requirement. Please let Linda Russell know if you
would like to be added to our mailing list.
Once on the NANAs’ email list, you will receive a
detailed email a few days before the walks, specifying
time and meeting place. If you are not yet on our
mailing list, contact Ginger, Gloria, or Pat before the
walk for the current itinerary.

Sally Ehrle. The prompt is “The Worst Date.” RSVP to
Sally.
We meet once a month to share short pieces that we
have written from our own experiences or insights. The
topic is selected by the hostess and members come to
the meeting with 2-3 page written responses, having
interpreted the prompt in whatever way they chose, and
read them to the group. These musings or recollections
from our childhood, adolescence, and adulthood allow
us to share ourselves with others in a safe environment.
All things shared by others are agreed to be held in
confidence.
NEEDLEWORK GROUP (1st and 3rd Thursdays, 9:30 am-noon)
Barbara Jaffe (240-731-6677) [email protected]
If you sew, knit, crochet, mend, darn, smock, or do
needlepoint or tapestry, or if you want to learn these
crafts, come to our meeting. We talk, eat, solve the
world’s problems, and laugh. We’re meeting at Terry
Martini’s house on Thursday, October 1st. We’ll meet at
Ann Keir’s house on Thursday, October 15th. Email or
call Barbara for directions.
Although this is a great way to renew your interest in
writing, or further develop your writing skills, the focus
is not on writing style or expertise. There is no
critiquing of the writing, only sharing with supportive
friends. You are not required to write a paper on your
first visit. Contact Stephanie for meeting specifics and/
or to be placed on our email list.
