New Annapolitans News October 2015 www.Annapolitans.org New Annapolitans P.O. Box 5251 Annapolis, MD 21403-0700 410-216-6000 GENERAL MEETING: Wednesday, October 7, 2014 PROGRAM: Women and Bikes Changing Lives WHERE: Unitarian Universalist Church, 333 Dubois Rd., Annapolis, MD WHEN: Social time 9:30 – 10a.m. Meeting 10:00 am OPTIONAL LUNCH: Les Folies 2552 Riva Road, Annapolis (sign-up desk in lobby) **Prospective members are invited to check in with the VP-Membership at 9:15 am.** General meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month except February, July and August. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE: Ann Carroll (410-224-2753) [email protected] In a couple of weeks, a bright lime green Membership Directory will land in each of our mailboxes. Needless to say (though it’s clearly referenced in the title), it’s very easy to overlook the first few pages that contain our Bylaws and Standing Rules. But they’re worth reading. The Standing Rules are particularly important, and you’ll note that this is where we as members have made a few changes over the years to promote transparency in our club. The most recent change was first circulated in the December 2014 newsletter, and voted on by the general membership at our December meeting. As originally written, Standing Rule #5 read: “A resident who does not meet the criterion of joining the New Annapolitans within the first two years of moving to the Greater Annapolis area may submit a letter to the Executive Board requesting admittance.” In December, we clarified this Rule with another line: “Consideration will be given to applicants who are not new residents but have recently experienced a significant life-changing personal circumstance.” There’s been some confusion about this addition, and so I’d like to call your attention to how little this rule has actually changed – as we need your help in making this clear to others. New Annapolitans was founded to help newcomers adjust to living in Annapolis, and that remains the essence of the club. But over the years, several Executive Boards have felt that more guidance in Standing Rule #5 would be helpful and would foster more consistent decisions. So what is a “significant life-changing personal circumstance?” All of us can probably answer this question, as these are the life events we fear most. The recent loss of a spouse or partner, through death or a sudden divorce. The death of a parent who required years of care. Retirement from a career that left little time for building friendships. Turning points like these often demand construction of a new life, just as the moves we made challenged us to begin anew. Please, when your new Directory arrives, take a look at those first few pages and help us by being an informed member of this wonderful Club! Ann Carrol It is not too late to renew your membership if you have let it lapse. But please act quickly! Board Information Please use a RENEWAL form not a ‘New Member form.’ The dues (including fees) for renewing now are $50 in October, $55 in November, and $60 in December. After December 31, renewals are not accepted and members are not eligible to rejoin after December 31 of the year their membership lapses. 1st VICE PRESIDENT-NEWCOMERS Georgina Hammond (410-263-4342) [email protected] All newcomers (new members are newcomers for a year after joining) are invited to alternating coffees at 10 am or Teas at 1 pm on the third Thursday of each month except August. The Newcomers Tea (1-3 pm) on October 15th will be hosted by Pat Casey and Kathy Clatanoff at Acton’s Landing in downtown Annapolis. Please join us to meet other newcomers and learn about events in and around Annapolis. Watch for an email from your Big Sister, and mark your calendars for these fun get-togethers. Keep an eye out for your new Directory, which will be mailed in October! And be sure to encourage prospective members to visit the New Annapolitans' website at www.annapolitans.org where links are available to download our current newsletter and New Member Application. 4th VICE PRESIDENT-INTEREST GROUPS Vicki Duncan (410-263-2115) [email protected] 2nd VICE PRESIDENT-PROGRAMS Thanks again to all chairs and co-chairs for demonstrating such creativity and enthusiasm at our September general meeting! Matty Matzen (410-280-1447) [email protected] Bicycles were were popular with women by 1895 and provided new options for mobility and personal freedom. This freedom will be dramatized at the General Meeting by the Annapolis-based “Bike Like a Girl” team, the second eight-woman team to enter the Race across America (RAAM), from Oceanside, CA, on June 20th to Annapolis on June 26th. The team, with six local riders, finished the race in six days, 12 hours and 58 minutes, with an average of 19.14 mph. One of their goals is to raise money to support girls and women through cycling, including donating bicycles to women in Afghanistan. The local members of the team will tell their story (with a short video) at the meeting. If you missed that meeting, you may sign up for an Interest Group (IG) at any time by contacting the group’s chair. You also may visit a group before signing up on their email list. To do so, just send your RSVP to the chair and hostess. See the details of each IG for information on whether experience in their particular activity is required. We're excited to offer a new Interest Group, Cooking Class Showcase, chaired by Lesley Younes. Read about this new group in the newsletter, listed alphabetically under “More Groups.” The lunch after the program will be at Les Folies on Riva Rd., Annapolis. The lunch is $25 (which includes tax and gratuity) paid in cash when you sign up in the church lobby before the General Meeting. If you are either late or can’t attend the meeting but would like to join us, contact me. An email is sent out on Wednesday and you must respond by Saturday if you want to play on the upcoming Monday. We accommodate extras so no one is left out. We play each Thursday morning at the Bay Hills Golf Course in Arnold, Md. Women who have played golf, regardless of skill level, are invited to join us. No handicap is required.
