Texture Weekend Workshop
Mosaic jewelry is all the rage in fashion magazines and boutiques. In this one
day workshop, bring mom or make something unique- just for her -that will
express your personal, one-of-a-kind sense of fashion. Participants will make
two mosaic jewelry projects- earrings, pendants, rings, and belt buckles- all
embellished with the plethora of materials (glass, stone, millifiore). This is a
fun opportunity to make something lasting and special. Rudimentary mosaic
techniques, methods, and application will be covered. No prior mosaic experience is necessary! All materials and use of tools provided.
In the body of a mosaic, the texture is not only the skin but also a reflection
of the soul of the artist that creates it. The goal is to demonstrate how, by
simply manipulating the tesserae, it is possible to create many different
textural effects. Participants will complete one mosaic each day, producing
distinct textures that reflect a variety of thought, sensation and emotion.
This workshop is aimed at students, familiar with both the direct method in
thin-set and the use of the hammer and hardie, who would like to improve
their skills and increase their artistic vocabulary. Materials and use of tools
are provided. This three day workshop is suitable for intermediate students
and above. Class size is limited to eight students.

Bas Relief Workshop
The addition of bas or (low) relief is a sculptural technique that adds interest
and depth to two dimensional flat panel mosaic art. It is a simple process
using easy to source materials and tools. Students of all levels can benefit
from learning how to add dimensional features using this straightforward
technique. Tips for how to properly design for bas relief; how to select
materials and adhering of tesserae to the substrate will also be presented. The
participants will be taken step by step through the entire process as each creates a 12” x 12” 2D sculptural mosaic substrate on wood that can later be used
for applying creating a mosaic. This class is appropriate for students of any
level. This session should particularly benefit those who want to add depth
and dimension to their 2D mosaic art.

This five day workshop is about working together. Using a variety of materials, such as marble, Smalti, rocks, glass, shells, metals, etc., we will complete
one large panel measuring approximately 2’x5’. The design will be provided
by the instructor, with the students rotating and working on a different
section at each class. The goal of this workshop is to complete the mosaic.
The challenge will be to understand the way each student is interpreting the
cartoon and to be able to connect with it effectively. Progress of the project
will be photo documented with each student receiving a digital copy. The
finished mosaic will remain the property of CMS. Prior experience using the
hammer and hardie is required. Class size is limited to 6.

Modern Expressions II
with Verdiano Marzi
Philadelphia Artist Carol Shelkin brings her expertise to CMS for this 3
day workshop utilizing glass to create a portrait in mosaic. Students will use
traditional and non-traditional mosaic techniques to understand structure,
cross-contour, highlights, color, gradation, value and types of shadows.
Ms. Shelkin will instruct students how to “see” things differently using her
techniques and demonstrations. Class participants will learn how to mix glass
values and colors to define planes, and how to use color most effectively. The
workshop will include a one hour demonstration and a life-like, 12” x 12”
mosaic will begin from a photograph. Cost includes a $50 material fee
Learning why elements in a mosaic are meaningful and discovering how to
connect them will be explored with Maestro Marzi in this 6 day workshop.
Drawing relationships between materials and shapes through composition
and rhythm- this class will give students new perspectives about their work.
Participants will discover their relationships to materials and the meaning
that can be culled from them. The cost of this 6 day workshop includes a
daily lunch, a walking tour of Chicago mosaics, complete access to the CMS
studio use of tools and a comprehensive selection of materials, $1100. This

Dalle de Verre (Slab Glass)
with Sophie Drouin
This 5-day workshop will explore modern expression in mosaics, while
stressing the importance and discipline of andamento and cohesion within
the language and balance of design. Maestro Marzi will work with students
collectively and individually to assist in developing an eye for composition
and color in the students artistic expression. A mixture of glass and stone
materials will be provided for a wide range of design possibilities. Hammer
and hardie cutting techniques will be used for both stone and glass, and
the adhesive will be fine thinset. Class size is limited. The 5-day workshop
includes an excellent daily lunch, an optional downtown walking tour of
Chicago mosaics, complete access to the studio, tools and a comprehensive
selection of materials. Additionally, translation and assistance will be provided by our own Matteo Randi. Space is strictly limited to 12 students.
Dalle de Verre or “slab glass” is a technique that was developed in Europe for
the use in early Christian churches where colored chunks of glass were set
into stone or clay. CMS is proud to introduce students to this technique in
an exclusive 5 day workshop with Canadian artist Sophie Drouin. Students
will combine Dalle de Verre with other materials to create pieces that combine mosaic techniques, sculptural elements and the translucence of stained
glass. A special moulding process will also be taught to allow the creation of
curved, graceful shapes to incorporate a built-in hanging mechanism. Don’t
miss this opportunity to experience this exciting technique at CMS. All
materials, supplies and use of tools will be provided.

Design Fundamentals
for Mosaics with Sue Giannotti
Can a week or more change your life? Or at least in your approach in your studio practice? Yes!! Give us 10 days
or a combination of time and CMS will give you back-to-back instructions in 4, 3 or 2 intensive classes. For the
full 10 day experience June 9th -17th students can immerse themselves in these 4 opportunities – Hammer &
Hardie Intensive, Textures, Design Fundamentals for Mosaics and a Mosaic Tour and Critique. For the full 7 day
experience July 8th -15th (one day to relax), students can immerse themselves in these 4 opportunities – One Day
Smalti, Mosaic Drawing Fundamentals, Landscape I and Hammer and Hardie Intensive.
Join us for a 3-day intensive workshop and learn how to use the principles
and elements of art to make your mosaics even better. With numerous
hands-on exercises, St. Louis artist Sue Giannotti will teach value, color
and andamento; fundamental design elements and principles (e.g., focal
point, repetition), material selection/planning; how to work your cartoon
and better preplan. While ideal for representational work, the concepts
apply to all types of mosaics. Even if you think you cannot draw, this
workshop will teach techniques to improve the flow of your work. Designed
for those with little or no formal art education, participants can range
from beginners to advanced mosaicists. Instead of making a mosaic during
the course, students will create a hands-on book with ample projects from
the exercises and leave with that book, beginning supplies, and their own
mosaic-ready cartoon incorporating concepts from the course. If you’re up
for a design boot camp and would like to learn how to incorporating design
fundamentals and preparation can increase your satisfaction of the end result, please join us. The instructor will contact registered participants with
details on pre-class preparation. Class size is limited to 8 students.
This is a wonderful opportunity to study with various CMS instructors and gain confidence and new skills in this new
Summer Mosaic Intensive. Students can customize their intensive experience by choosing to enroll in 4, 3 or 2 classes.

Abstract Elements Workshop
with Sue Giannotti
(11am-2:30pm). Available to currently enrolled students or members of CMS, this studio time affords a perfect
opportunity to continue working independently on your project. Studio monitor are available to answer questions
and assist with your basic mosaic needs, however, no instruction is provided at these times. Use of tools and class
materials are included. Fees: $15 drop-in, $50 4 session pass.
When you hear the phrase “the elements”, what comes to mind? Water, wind,
fire, or the periodic table? In this 4-day workshop, artist Sue Giannotti will
teach participants how to take a focal element and identify and express its
unique personality in an abstract mosaic. If you’ve ever purchased or found
something you knew would be great for a mosaic, but didn’t know what to do
with it, this class is a great opportunity. Students may bring their own unique
element to explore and build on with smalti and marble, or element pieces will
be supplied in class. During the workshop, students will create 2 mini studies
and an abstract mosaic, each focusing on the unique properties of an element
(either found object, from the periodic table, or natural element-inspired).
CMS can COME to YOU! Our excellent trained instructors can take our classes on the road to your
school, your organization or community center. We have traveled all over the Chicagoland area and to nearby
cities and states to share the experience of creating mosaic art. We are an approved program provider for After
School Matters and can also bring workshops or weekly classes to your school, park district, YMCA, or community
center. We are also available to advise and consult on projects. Contact us to discuss the possibility of bringing our
programs TO YOU!
Course includes core materials, a starting element, use of all tools and design
supplies. Also included in the course fee is an attendance-optional presentation on Wednesday evening (7:30-8:30pm) covering color-wheel basics for
those wanting more info on this topic. This is an intensive workshop structured
for both beginners as well as experienced mosaicists; individual attention is
given to each student. Class size is limited to 12 students maximum.
