The drill gave us many opportunities to discuss all the variables and to talk about practicalities and common sense. It is also a good opportunity for all families to discuss what procedures you would follow in the event of an earthquake. UNIFORMS All students should now be in summer uniform. There is very little change, just the footwear. All students should now be wearing black roman sandals. This term also, all students are required to wear their sunhat while outside. These are available from the Wellness Centre at a cost of $12.00. SHOES If your student has grown out of their black winter shoes and you would like to donate the shoes to school, they can be delivered to the Wellness Centre. A character sketch is a written piece that is about person's personality and behaviour or a theatrical portrayal of a unique character. The students co-constructed the success criteria and this is what they came up with after analysing a few. Structural features: Introduction to character Physical characteristics Qualities and actions How you feel about the person Organised into paragraphs Language Features: descriptive language uses dialogue vivid adjectives similes, metaphors, personification and alliteration creates visual image for the reader by giving clues Ryan A grey car pulls up the driveway with patches of paint slowly moulding and peeling away off the bonnet. I instantly know it’s him. He jumps out the car leaving it shaking in its boots and says, “Ready to get an ass whipping boy?” He comes over from the Waikato where he goes to university, to play one on one with me. Because he thinks he’s the man at basketball, and I need to put him back into place. You can’t let him get out of line. Ryan gets very physical when we're out on the basketball court. The muscles on his arms are huge and his arms are the size of my thighs, and he’s such a big build. Standing at 6 foot 3 and it seems he's all muscle. For example, when we get inside he picks me up and throws me down like a bull throwing a rag doll around. Even though he's so big I still win three games in a row. After we're done playing basketball we go back to Ryan’s. On the way home he begins to tell a story. Ryan is a great storyteller. He says, “I remember when I used to live down here. We used to have our little gang. Stealing road signs and road cones, we used to call ourselves the bad gang. I also remember one night when the whole gang and some of the boys little brothers and I went ding dong ditching. We always went for this one old guy and there was an empty property right by his house all overgrown and weedy. One of us used to do it and then hide behind the fence real close like only 1 - 2 meters away. So one night we had been ding dong ditching at the old guys house and we’d done it about two times. Then I went up and rang the doorbell then he shouts out, “I’m gonna call the police!” We all thought, yea right and did it two more times. So my friend was just about to go up and we see two cars drive up. We all think, “No, that's not the police!” As these cars pull up we realise it was the police, so all they must have seen was thirteen kids sprinting out of the empty section. They chased after us but we knew every gully and drain way so they weren't going to catch us. Ryan is the greatest big cousin in the world, he always makes time for me and makes every situation a great one. If you're having a bad day he’ll make you laugh and turn it round. He’s a great story teller and will always give you a run for your money in any sport. Overall, he’s just a great cousin and a great friend. By Jack Preston Rm 41 Volume 9 October 2015 OUR VISION: EXPLORING PERSONAL POTENTIAL CHARACTER SKETCHES contd/… Fergus (My little brother). Fergus Warren Aitken was born on the 5th August 2005. He spent the first few months of his life at Starship hospital. He had approximately 3 holes in his heart and needed to have surgery; you can still see the scar on his chest to this day. Fergus is quite silly, cheeky and sometimes naughty. Fergus is 9 years old and goes to Tauriko School. He also goes to Auckland once a month on Fridays for speech therapy. Fergus can also be quite silly like if he is doing something, it can easily get out of hand by him taking it too far. For example, whipping cream. Me and Fergus were whipping cream then all of a sudden he turned the beater up to full and cream went everywhere. I mean everywhere; all over the pantry, stove, floor, walls, and even on the fridge. Fergus is also fun. Me and Fergus were riding on the magic carpet with Callum (my older brother) driving us. We fell off and laughed quite a lot and the same thing happened when he fell off with Callum. Fergus was also born with a thing called down syndrome. This means he takes longer to grow up and he looks a little different to everyone else but not too different. He also loves the movies: Frozen, Elmo, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and many more. Fergus is my little brother and I love him very much. by Lachie Aitken Rm 41 Want the best deal on a Mortgage/Home Loan?
