Isn’t a wellness lifestyle really just a synonym for restrictive lifestyle? I’ll grant you that living in today’s world does not make “wellness living” or being passionate about it very easy. Even our health care community, which should be the bastion for healthy living, treats wellness science like the crazy cousin in the family that everyone acknowledges but nobody wants to talk to. “Why care about wellness and health when we have so many exciting diseases and conditions to treat?” seems to be the mantra. The answer to that question may be a little heart-wrenching for some, but here it is nonetheless… 80% of western society dies from heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and other chronic illness and they are all on the rise in our population. More money spent on research and disease care every year has yet to stop any of the rises in chronic illness we have seen over the last several decades. Chances are that is your fate as well. I regret having to be so serious to start this blog, but an occasional dose of reality is healthy. Sometimes the crazy cousin is right, and it would be wise to listen. I saw a study yesterday that excited me. It looked at blueberries, and their potential to stop the progression of aggressive breast cancer as well as decrease your risk for cancer in the first place.1 Isn’t that incredible? To many that study is either incredibly shocking or they won’t believe it. How could something as simple as blueberries stop the ugly monster that is cancer? What researchers will likely do with this information, and what they have done in the past, is try and isolate the specific property or chemical in blueberries that may be responsible for this and try to develop a drug from that information. We see this when it comes to a relatively recent discovery of a compound called BDNF, which many scientists are referring to as “miracle grow” for the brain. BDNF causes the brain to literally grow in size and connections when it is present.2 It serves to strengthen healthy connections for higher level thought processing, stress and anxiety control, and bolsters connections responsible for joy and happiness. Guess what allows for the creation and secretion of this compound in the brain? Exercise. And guess what researchers are trying to do with newly discovered BDNF? They are trying to find a way to create a pharmaceutical. This is what I mean by the wellness lifestyle being trapped in an allopathic world. Blueberries and exercise are found to have incredible benefits and cause incredibly positive changes in our body physiology and function beyond what we previously thought. And what do we do with this information? Do we launch pricey and expansive campaigns aimed at encouraging people to exercise and eat healthy fruits like blueberries more often? Nope, we make some more drugs. Another temptation is to take the information about blueberries and exercise and believe that these are great treatments for anxiety or cancer. Once again, that is trapping wellness lifestyle behaviors in the allopathic system. They aren’t treatments at all, but rather genetically congruent lifestyle choices that our bodies require to express health. Healthy lifestyle choices aren’t treatments to be used for combating illness and disease. Chronic illnesses like heart disease, cancer, or diabetes are not mysterious outside forces that afflict the body; they are expressions of adaptive or exhausted physiology. Don’t trap wellness lifestyle in the allopathic world. Decide today to make it a consistent part of your world! References: 1. ADAM AND DR. GREGG HCWC Case Study of the Month Female in her 30s with moderately severe neck and headache pain occurring on a daily basis and gradually worsening for several months. After one adjustment improvement in her pain was evident, and after one week of care the patient was reporting almost no headache symptoms. Continued improvement is expected as care progresses. This month’s study focused on the consumption of anti-oxidant rich foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, and olive oil and if it was correlated with waist circumference and body inflammation or oxidative stress. The results indicated an inverse relationship between the amount of antioxidant foods consumed and central adiposity (waist circumference). Not only that, but they found that those with the highest intake of anti-oxidant rich foods had improved glucose and LDL (bad cholesterol) metabolism. Something else the study found was the higher the intake of anti-oxidant rich foods the lower the concentrations of ox-LDL, which is a form of LDL that is implicated in cardiovascular disease. This suggests a diet high in fruits, vegetables, nuts, and healthy oils such as olive oil will decrease ones risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Another interesting piece of information is that this study was performed on young adults meaning you can start to alter your blood profile and inflammation levels at a young age. This is just one more study confirming the impact of diet on disease and illness. So, here is to plenty of fruits and veggies!
