Worship ~ March 2017 Welcome and Introductions Call to Worship: L: The cross of Christ brings salvation to the world! P: We do cherish the old rugged cross! Hymn (UMH 504) ~ The Old Rugged Cross (v. 1, 2, 4) On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross, the emblem of suffering and shame; and I love that old cross where the dearest and best for a world of lost sinners was slain. [Refrain]: So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross, till my trophies at last I lay down; I will cling to the old rugged cross, and exchange it some day for a crown. In that old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine, a wondrous beauty I see, for ‘twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died, to pardon and sanctify me. [Refrain] To that old rugged cross I will ever be true, its shame and reproach gladly bear; then he’ll call me some day to my home far away, where his glory forever I’ll share. [Refrain] Page | 1 Scripture: Selections from Isaiah 53 (NRSV) 4 Surely he has borne our infirmities and carried our diseases; 5But he was wounded for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the punishment that made us whole, and by his bruises we are healed. 6All we like sheep have gone astray; we have all turned to our own way, and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. 7like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth. 12yet he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. Hymn (UMH 301) ~ Jesus, Keep Me Near the Cross Jesus, keep me near the cross; there a precious fountain, free to all, a healing stream, flows from Calvary’s mountain. In the cross, in the cross, be my glory ever, till my raptured soul shall find rest beyond the river. Scripture: Matthew 15:33-39 When it was noon, darkness came over the whole land[a] until three in the afternoon. At three o’clock Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” When some of the bystanders heard it, they said, “Listen, he is calling for Elijah.” And someone ran, filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a stick, and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.” Then Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. Now when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was God’s Son!” Page | 2 Hymn (UMH 288) ~ Were You There (v. 1, 3, 5) ] 1. Page | 3 Prayer before receiving Communion Almighty God, Holy One, look upon us with your mercy and grant us a vision of your glory so that, with humble and penitent hearts, we may receive the good gifts that you are more ready to give than we are to receive; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Communion Liturgy and Receiving Joys and Concerns/Prayer (followed by the Lord’s Prayer) Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven; and give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. Closing Hymn (UMC 672) ~ God Be with You till We Meet Again God be with you till we meet again; by His counsels guide, uphold you, with His sheep securely fold you; God be with you till we meet again. Till we meet, till we meet, till we meet at Jesus’ feet; till we meet, till we meet, God be with you till we meet again.
