Unfortunately, we made a mistake when we
changed the accrual period for Customer Club
points (announced in Bulletin 3/2016). We are
therefore going back to a calendar year, just
like it has always been. All purchases that you
make in a year are now included. For those of
you who are members of the Club, this means
that all of the purchases you made in 2016 will
determine your membership level for 2017.
You will be able to see how many points
you earned in 2016 on the order form that will
be included in the Bulletin March 2017.
You need 12,000 points to be a Gold Member, 6,000 points to be a Silver Member and
1,500 points to be a Bronze member.
The points you collect in Customer Club
serve as a source of inspiration and stepping
stone to reach the next membership level.
How many points up to Silver, how many
points up to Gold? When do I become a
Bronze member? These are questions we are
asked a lot.

BULLETIN JANUARY · 2017
Henning Trollbäck is the artist behind the poignant
Christmas in Storskogen stamps from 2013. This time he
is conveying another emotional state, namely “retro”.
He writes exclusively for Bulletin’s readers about his
work on the stamps and his relationship to the retro phenomenon.
Old objects
that speak
to us today
Within the area of design, retro means returning to older styles. New products are made
in a retro style, but the term also includes old
products that become popular again. One
good example of this is the string shelf that is
depicted on the coil stamp.
Before working on the stamp, I researched
what had been written about the retro
phenomenon. I noted in particular a quote
by William Morris, from England, who was a
designer and author during the second half of
the 1800s.
Morris said that “the past is not dead, it is
living in us, and will be alive in the future which
we are now helping to make”. His point is that
we do not live our lives today in isolation from
the past, and this stamp series shines a spotlight on things we created before.
The word “retro” has modern connotations,
despite it being anchored in the past. We are
not referring to the Middle Ages when we call
something “retro”. But what products can be
considered retro, and why? I think it refers
to objects that in some way still speak to us
today.
Name: Henning Trollbäck.
Lives in: Stockholm.
Education: Graduated in 2012 from the
University College of Arts, Crafts and Design’s
Department of Graphic Design & Illustration,
participated in PostNord’s and the University’s
special course on stamp design.
Assignment: Stamps, book illustrations, book
covers, children’s books with own illustrations
and texts, design products.
Family: Married, two children.
Contemporary objects
Many young families are passionate about
retro, and my own family is no exception. Both
string book shelves and classic porcelain from
Gustavsberg can be found in our home. The
sideboard with the red desk lamp that is depicted on the stamp belongs to us.
The home office is one of the environments
that was included in my assignment for the
stamps. Depicted from top to bottom are a
hall with vintage clothing, a kitchen where the
cabinet with sliding doors is filled with 1950s
porcelain and this same porcelain set out on
the table. The living room lamp, coffee table
and TV furniture are period pieces.
TV furniture, yes. As you can see there is
a flat-screen TV there. The presence of the
flat-screen TV, bike helmet, stovetop, mobile
telephone and laptop illustrates the dialogue
between old and new that can be found in
most modern homes.

String shelf a
design classic
New!
When the book publisher Bonnier announced a competition in 1949
to create a mountable and expandable book shelf, designer couple
Kajsa and Nisse Strinning leapt at the opportunity. Their submission,
the String bookshelf, won the competition and went on to become very
popular.
The String bookshelf consists of veneered shelves that are hung on
plastic-covered metal gables. The shelf originally hung on the wall, but
subsequently evolved to include a series of standing models, including
a secretary. The String bookshelf is one of the great Swedish design
classics of the 20th century.
The Souvenir Sheet was designed by Henning Trollbäck, who also
designed the Retro stamps.

New maximum cards
introduce a retro feel
Artist Henning Trollbäck has designed the new maximum cards with a
wonderful retro feel. He is also the designer behind the current Retro
stamps.
I am amused by retro, but I am not
nostalgic. We look upon older objects
with affection and reverence, but
they do not belong in a museum.
They should be used, be part of our
immediate surroundings and create a
pleasant atmosphere.

International Security Printers
Secures future quality
& product development
PostNord’s Instagram competition, #mittfrimärke (My Stamp), has
been a success and proves that Swedes are very interested
in stamps. The competition links the power of a physical
letter to social media and digital communication.
Stamps by Swedes
- presenting the
seven winning
motifs
Photo: Carsten Andersen
We announced in the previous issue of Bulletin
that production of the Danish and Swedish
stamps will be moved during the first six
months of 2017 to an external printing works.
The agreement has been signed with
Cartor Security Printers, a sister company
to Walsall Security Printers (WSP), under the
International Security Printers Ltd group (ISP).
Future stamps will be printed at both Cartor
and WSP.
ISP prints valuable documents and has
specialized in stamps. It delivers stamps and
security printing to 180 customers throughout
the world.
Booklet markings will disappear
The stamps from ISP’s printing presses will
have the same level of quality as stamps from
our own printing works in Kista. For collectors,
the transfer to ISP as a supplier means that the
markings on the booklets will disappear.
The stamp booklets we print today in Kista
have several different markings, such as gray
wedges and numbers. The purpose of these
markings is to control the printing process and
stamp volumes. WSP uses a different system
to do this, so all of the markings will disappear from the booklets once ISP takes over
production.
The agreement with Cartor Security
Printers for stamp production is one way for
PostNord to adapt its operations to a changing
market and create better conditions for developing its stamp issues.
The motifs for the stamps that will depict photos from the Swedish people have now been
decided. Seven motifs were selected from the
20 finalists, which in turn had been selected
from a record number of submissions. More
than 20,000 photographs were uploaded to
Instagram. The stamps and the photographers
behind the winning motifs will be presented in
more detail in a future issue of Bulletin.
Our launch of the #mittfrimärke photo competition on Instagram in the middle of May
generated a massive response. In just a few
days people uploaded thousands of photos
with the #mittfrimärke tag.
After the submission period closed, the
jury - PostNord’s Stamp Advisory Committee
- went through all of the more than 20,000
submitted photos to select the 20 finalists. The
finalists and their photos were announced in
September and voting was opened.
Contemporary depiction of Sweden
The jury primarily looked at the submissions’
originality and how the photo composition
would work as a stamp. The small format of
a stamp places special requirements on the
motif’s clarity and ability to communicate its
content.
The jury also strove during the selection
process to select photos that would fulfil the
objective of Swedish stamps to provide a
diverse reflection of contemporary Sweden.
Date of issue set for May
Three of the seven winners were selected
through an open vote on mittfrimärke.se and
the remaining four were selected by the jury
following a discussion and an internal vote.
The results were announced in the middle of
November. The work to design the stamps and
find suitable typographical solutions started
immediately.
On May 11, the stamps of the Swedish people will be available for purchase in a booklet
of ten stamps with five motifs and two stamp
motifs in a coil.

Correction
A sketch of the Lund University memorial letter that was
published on page 10 of the November issue of Bulletin
showed the wrong denomination on the stamps in the mini
sheet. The printed stamps have a denomination of SEK 13.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.
The sketch for the memorial letter was made before the
change in VAT, when the denomination for international
was SEK 1 higher. To the right is a picture of the memorial
letter with the correct denomination on the stamps.
The next Bulletin will arrive at the end of February
