VMS PURPLE NEWSLETTER
Volume 21
Issue #11
Nov. 21-22, 2016
The Builders Club would like to thank our VMS community for all the donations to our
annual Turkey Challenge Food Drive. Once again, our food drive was a success as we
collected over 500 food items for the Kiwanis food pantry! Two teachers tied for
collecting 180 items each. As a result, Mr. Chaize and Mrs. Seaburg will dress as a
turkey on Monday.
Builders Club will be selling Bells for Life from December 6th through December 18th
during 5th period lunch for $1. They will also sell them at the Boys’ home opener
basketball game on December 6th.

Grade 6
English 6 students will conclude our reading of Because of Mr. Terupt. We will identify
each of the characters' helpful and harmful traits, as well as important lessons that
they teach us. No quiz due to the short week--have a great Thanksgiving!
Math 6 students will continue our unit on ratios and proportions.
Social Studies 6 students should be prepared for their Big Era's 1 and 2 quiz Tuesday!
Science 6 students will prep our hot air balloons for flight and, depending on the
weather, try to fly them.
FACS 6 students will start the study of nutrition this week. For homework, they need
to keep track of their physical activity for a week and be looking for a food or
beverage package they can bring in. The empty package needs to be from a food or
beverage that contains sugar.
Grade 7
English 7 students will complete pre-writing steps for writing their narrative and then
actually start writing their stories. We will work on finishing and revising drafts when
we return from Thanksgiving break.
Math 7 and 7X students will be working on an investigation activity in which they need
to use proportional thinking to capture the suspect and apprehend him/her. We will
use our tools that we practiced in our proportional unit to narrow our suspects and find
who did the crime!
Social Studies 7 students will be looking at the French and Indian War as a source of
escalating tensions between the colonists and Britain and how those tensions put us on
the road to revolution. To do this, students will use their skills as historians
(detectives) to tell the story (solve the crime). Through the use of primary and
secondary sources, we will examine suspects, determine motives and analyze
evidence. There is a vocab quiz on Tuesday, 11/29. Get updates on what is going on
in class… sign up for Guardian Summaries. Email Mrs. Young
([email protected]) today and she will send you an invite! You can also use
the class website at https://sites.google.com/a/voorheesville.org/ss7young/ as a
resource.
Science 7 students will study the Respiratory System this week. Students need to
bring in empty disposable water bottles for class next week so they can create models
of the lungs.
Grade 8
English 8 students will read chapter 5 of The Call of the Wild, and students will need to
complete a chapter 5 analysis sheet.
Math 8 students will be completing their unit on Expressions and Equations and will
have a unit test on Tuesday.
Algebra 1 students will be completing their unit on Polynomials and will have a unit
test on Tuesday.
Social Studies 8 students will begin our unit on the Progressive Era, by studying some
of the reforms that came as a direct result of the problems that arose during the
Industrial Era. There will be no homework this week, as it is only a two day week.
Science 8 students will be presenting the element they've researched from the
periodic table.
FACS 8 students will continue with their budgeting assignments.
