Artist Statement: Todd Pickering Cover Artist b. 1960 Ewa Beach, Hawaii “In many senses, I’m just a defender of beauty. Of course, then there is the debate over what beauty is. For me it is just one thing: Quiet That’s the nature of it. It’s very simple.” Art is a “what if” or a hypothesis. I set an idea in motion and follow the thread, always asking "Is it true?" In the process, I am constantly checking with the materials to see if there is a poetic element. Also, it must resonate with my own personal story and inner dialogue. This story and dialogue is the culmination of my life experience. It is my “voice.” 2 Dance Palace SPRING/SUMMER 2017 www.dancepalace.org Note from our Executive Director Dear Dance Palace Community, At a time when our world is accelerating and quickly changing, local communities can serve as an anchor. They provide an opportunity for people to slow down. Spend time with our friends and neighbors. Share a laugh. Be entertained. Discuss the important issues occurring in our community and the world at large. What appealed most to me about the opportunity to lead the Dance Palace was its role as a central part of this truly amazing West Marin community. From supporting local non-profits by providing space for them to do some of their critical work, to offering community members a variety of classes, lively events, and engaging our youth through activities such as musical theater and summer camp, the Dance Palace serves as a venue to serve as that anchor. Photo © David Briggs, Point Reyes Light I am incredibly humbled and honored to have the opportunity to introduce myself to you as the new Executive Director of the Dance Palace, and welcome you to join me in a very engaging and fulfilling next chapter in the organization’s life. I am lucky to have joined such a fantastic team of board, staff and committee members, who work so hard to make the Dance Palace truly the heart of this community. Please join us for our upcoming events, camp, classes, and community gatherings this spring like the Albany Jazz band returning for their annual celebration on Saturday, May 21st. SPRING/SUMMER 2017 Dance Palace 11 At Dance Palace Camp A Message from Camp Director Vickisa I hate to admit how long ago I started working at and then became the Director of the Dance Palace Camp. I continue because I really love this summer camp and believe it does make a difference in the lives of children as they grow up and become citizens of West Marin and the world. This has been confirmed by my many conversations with grown-up campers who have told me what a difference their camp experience made in their friendships, their appreciation of their environment and their discovery of personal creative gifts. Some have gone so far as to say that Dance Palace Camp saved their lives - we have a great track record! At camp, we provide a wide range of activities focusing on our environment, creativity and imagination with hands-on fun for everyone. With our low camper-tostaff ratio we are able to provide caring, personal attention to all campers and their families. Camp is not just about activities but also we encourage the development of friendships, kindness, cooperation, social skills and independence. Practically every day is a Special Day! Campers show off their grandparent or photos on Grandparents Day which is similar to Pet Day but without leashes. Tropical Day includes the hula and tropical drinks on the lawn, Beach Day is at Hearts Desire, and Harry Potter Day is where you can be anyone you want to be. We also have Library Programs, Bear Valley trips and tons more. 12 Dance Palace SPRING/SUMMER 2017 CAMP ACTIVITIES INCLUDE Arts & Crafts • Ceramics • Kids’ Cuisine • Nature Observation and Crafts Studies • Outdoor Adventures • Sports & Games • Circus • Crazy Science • Yoga • Aikido • Explorers’ Club • Theater • World Music & Dance • Special Theme Days & Outings Teens included! A powerful way to give back and pay it forward is by naming the Dance Palace in your legacy plans. Whether you designate a percentage of your estate or assign the Dance Palace as a recipient of your life insurance benefits, you’re making a powerful gift that will carry your intention – and your community – into the future. If you have provided for the Dance Palace in your estate plan, please share this information with us—we would like to thank you for your confidence in the work we do. If you haven’t yet, we invite and encourage you to contribute to the Dance Palace Legacy Fund, to be a part of a group of individuals, who through their estate gifts, secure a bright future for the Dance Palace and this community.
