How did the Turkey become the bird of Thanksgiving?
The original Thanksgiving at Plymouth, MA in 1621 talks about feasting on fowl.
This could have been turkeys, ducks, geese, swans, cranes or even eagles.
Thanksgiving as we know it can be attributed to Sarah Josepha Hale, the author of “Mary had a Little
Lamb”. Sarah wrote the book “Northwood” in 1827 where she descibes the perfect Thanksgiving, with
the family gathered around the table eating turkey. Sarah lobbied for 17 years to make Thanksgiving a
National Holiday to match Independence Day, which inlcuded writing to 5 Presidents. It was one of these
letters to Abraham Lincoln that led to the creation of the National Holiday in 1863.
